Chapter 1265: Chapter 1087: Xiao’ai, Dabao, Xiaobei

Axiang walked a few steps, then turned back for one more look, only to see Xia Dabao intently watching the play, clapping and cheering from time to time, while Zhao Datu silently watched Xia Dabao, happy because Zhao Datu was happy.

Axiang felt a wave of sadness, and tears inevitably fell. She quietly walked out of the crowd, leaving the hubbub behind.

When Axiang left the entrance of the village and walked under a centuries-old lychee tree outside, she could no longer hold back and leaned on the trunk to cry.

She didn’t know how long she had cried when suddenly someone patted her from behind, the force just like Zhao Datu’s pat, which secretly thrilled her, making her think it was Zhao Datu who had followed her. But turning around, it turned out to be a villager named Shagen.

Shagen was particularly robust, even taller than Zhao Datu by a bit, with a fair and handsome face, yet he was a simpleton. His father had passed away, and his mother had run away when he was three years old. His grandmother had raised him, and when he had a high fever at the age of eight or nine, his intellectual development stopped at that age. In his teenage years, his grandmother also passed away, so he lived by himself. Fortunately, the village chief was kind and called on the villagers to help him when possible, teaching him how to farm. He managed the fields left by his parents by himself, and while he wasn’t good at many things, he could grow enough food for himself, sometimes even selling some in town. Living on his own was completely manageable for him.

Now, he had grown into his twenties, but still hadn’t managed to find a wife.

"Shagen, do you need something? Or... did you run into some problem that you need my help with?" Axiang asked.

She used to encounter Shagen often, like in the vegetable field, when he needed to fertilize, Axiang would teach him a bit, as well as teach him how to wash clothes. Although Shagen was intellectually challenged, the mentality of an eight- or nine-year-old wasn’t so bad, just unable to comprehend many things that adults do.

Seeing that Axiang’s eyes were red, Shagen unexpectedly took out a handful of sunflower seeds from his pocket and offered them to Axiang, even saying something he seldom did, "For you to eat, want some?"

Perhaps feeling that someone finally cared, Axiang felt a bit better, smiling as she said, "I don’t want any, you eat."

Seeing Axiang not accepting, Shagen put the sunflower seeds back into his pocket, but then dug out a handful of peanuts from another pocket, "What about these?"

Axiang shook her head again, "I don’t want any, keep them all for yourself. By the way, why aren’t you at the theater? The play there is really good."

Shagen didn’t answer, just kept looking at Axiang. Axiang couldn’t help but smile, then coaxed him like a child, "If you aren’t going to watch the play, then just play by yourself, be careful not to wander off, and when it gets dark, you need to go home, you understand?"

Shagen obediently nodded his head, and Axiang confidently walked away.

...

At the theater, Xia Dabao was thoroughly enjoying herself, clapping enthusiastically for a while. Then she suddenly wanted to discuss the plot with Axiang next to her, but upon turning around, she was startled.

Without knowing when, Axiang had been replaced by Zhao Datu, nor knew how long she had been sitting next to Zhao Datu.

She was so angry that she immediately stood up, and because Zhao Datu didn’t dare to disturb Xia Dabao, he had been sitting at the edge of the seat. In consequence, as soon as Xia Dabao stood up, his bench tipped over, causing him to fall to the ground.

The scene was too comical, leaving Xia Dabao crying and laughing at the same time, but she quickly regained her composure, then pointed at Zhao Datu and asked, "Where is Axiang?"
