Chapter 1237: Chapter 1059
Xia Dabao and Tian Xiaobei set off rather early. When they ascended the mountain, the morning fog had yet to disperse, and droplets of mist hung on the tips of the leaves of the plants that filled the mountain. Xia Dabao and Tian Xiaobei chatted as they climbed.
At the mid-mountain, there was a fork in the road. The two of them each took a different path; Tian Xiaobei continued deeper into the mountain to pick his medicinal herbs, while Xia Dabao went to chop wood. She knew where to find the better kind of firewood for burning.
Xia Dabao had almost finished chopping when she bundled up the firewood. She was just about to go hunt for rabbits when she heard voices from not too far away. She immediately climbed up a tree and parted some dense branches to look through.
"Zhao Datu and Axiang? How did they end up together?" Xia Dabao muttered to herself. She watched them for a while. The two weren’t talking; Axiang walked in front, with Zhao Datu following behind.
"This Zhao Datu, he isn’t thinking of bullying Axiang, is he?" Xia Dabao thought. Just as she was considering going down to help Axiang, she saw Axiang finally turn back and even hand her hatchet to Zhao Datu. Zhao Datu started chopping wood for Axiang and was smiling at her.
Although they were far apart, Xia Dabao could see that there seemed to be a smile on Axiang’s face. It looked like the two had made arrangements to come up together. They might even be discussing romantic matters.
Despite this, Xia Dabao still felt that Zhao Datu was someone to be wary of—in case he suddenly harm Axiang, it would be terrible. But Xia Dabao watched from the tree for a long time, and the scene remained unchanged; Zhao Datu was chopping wood, and Axiang was gathering it. The two seemed to be working in harmony, so Xia Dabao couldn’t be bothered to involve herself any longer. She leapt from that tree to another and went off to hunt rabbits.
...
By around noon, Xia Dabao returned to where she had been chopping wood. Today, she hadn’t managed to catch any rabbits, only a wild chicken, which wasn’t bad for making soup for her mother.
Her firewood was still there, but Zhao Datu and Axiang whom she saw in the morning were gone—probably descended the mountain since half a day is usually enough for chopping wood.
Xia Dabao then went to the shed where she and Tian Xiaobei had agreed to meet.
There, she remembered the last time they had sought shelter from the rain, Tian Xiaobei had suddenly kissed her, and she felt rather awkward.
Perhaps it was better to wait outside.
Just as she was about to go out, Tian Xiaobei had already returned. Tian Xiaobei, with his bamboo basket on his back, was sweating profusely. "Abao, you’re here. I almost thought I’d miss you," he said.
"Yes, did you manage to pick all the herbs you needed?" Xia Dabao asked.
"I had to come back even if I didn’t find them all. This afternoon a few villagers are coming to see me," Tian Xiaobei said.
Xia Dabao looked into Tian Xiaobei’s bamboo basket at the medicinal herbs: "What are these herbs for?"
"These are for women’s remedies, I picked them for Aunt Zhao," Tian Xiaobei explained, "She came to see me about her illness a few days ago. I thought about having her retrieve the jade pendant, so I agreed to treat her."
"Oh, she should indeed redeem it; after all, it’s rightfully yours. Why not get it back, right?" Xia Dabao said, then thought back to seeing Zhao Datu in the morning: "By the way, I saw Zhao Datu and the widow Chen’s daughter, Axiang, this morning. They had both gone up the mountain to chop wood as well."
"The two of them?"
"Yes, no one else," Xia Dabao said, "But by the time I came back, they were nowhere to be seen. Never mind them, let’s head down the mountain first."
Xia Dabao was about to shoulder the bundle of firewood, but Tian Xiaobei called out to her: "Wait, Abao."
