Chapter 1157: Chapter 1159: Xiao’ai, Dabao, Xiaobei

Other village ladies chimed in; Lady B added, "Yes, indeed, previously every household in our village had lychee trees, but we only grew them for our own consumption. We never imagined that lychees could fetch such a high price."

"That’s because we didn’t know where to sell, you see. Nan Feng and his brother are worldly men, they know how to find ways. Like ten years ago when they started the Lychee Garden, didn’t we all laugh at them? We wondered how they could possibly consume so many lychees, and if they couldn’t sell them, wouldn’t they just rot on the trees? They would have wasted so much energy taking care of them. Yet, look at these past few years; you all have been selling lychees so well that you can make a fortune in just one year," she continued.

Nan Feng chuckled, "It’s hardly making a fortune, just enough to cover expenses."

Lady D then asked Nan Feng, "Do you think if we also plant a lot of lychee trees, you could help us sell them all too?"

This topic was quite sensitive, akin to a trade secret. After Lady D asked, everyone fell silent for a moment. Nan Feng smiled and said, "We’d have to talk with my brother and those traders who want lychees. If those traders have a large demand, then everyone could consider planting lychees. But we can’t really guarantee that you’ll make money from it. Besides, cultivating lychee trees isn’t all that easy; it really took a lot of effort in the early years."

What Nan Feng said was true. Back then, the two of them had to tend so many trees, constantly watering and fertilizing. Xia Dabao was too young to help, he could only play around.

The discussion ended there, but then another lady asked Nan Feng, "I’ve noticed that you and your husband hardly ever spend any money. You must have saved quite a dowry for Abao by now, and for Axian’s future wedding expenses, right?"

Nan Feng, who had been chopping meat, paused briefly and replied, "Abao? We haven’t even begun to think about it; so the dowry can wait."

Nan Feng wasn’t in a rush, but the other village ladies were getting anxious. Lady A remarked, "Not in a rush? Isn’t Abao fourteen this year? Next door, Atao was betrothed at eight and is planning to marry in a couple of years. It’s better for a girl to marry early; otherwise, if she becomes an old lady, her choices will be very limited."

Unable to help a chuckle, Nan Feng responded, "Alright, I’ll keep an eye out for a suitable match for our Abao when I have time."

She was merely speaking casually, though; where could she possibly look? The boys nearby, Abao wouldn’t care for any of them, let alone Nan Feng herself.

Nan Feng simply hoped that Abao would find someone kind, someone who would cherish her just as her husband cherishes her. They could strive together, withstand tests, and even after many years of marriage, still have endless conversations.

In the village, however, most people married to continue the family line. More than just continuing the family line, people here also favored boys over girls. If a woman couldn’t bear sons, she would eventually be scorned by her mother-in-law. So the thought of Abao marrying into such a family made Nan Feng prefer her daughter not marrying at all. After all, they had food and shelter at home, and she was the apple of her parents’ eyes.

Yet, hearing Nan Feng speak like this, some village ladies thought she was relenting, so they began discussing Abao with Nan Feng again, "Abao is a good girl, but you need to watch her more carefully, Nan Feng. I think she’s too tomboyish sometimes, not ladylike at all. I’ve heard she really loves climbing around, just like a boy."
