Chapter 1140: Chapter 1142: Xiao’ai, Dabao, Xiaobei
"Abao, Axian, are you at home? Little Black is about to give birth," Lanlan, Zhao Ershen’s daughter, started calling out across the fish pond.
Xia Dabao had been busy these past days in the Lychee Forest and felt quite exhausted, so she slept in. But as soon as she heard Lanlan say Little Black was about to give birth, she immediately jumped out of bed, threw on her clothes without bothering to brush her hair, and dashed outside.
As soon as she burst into the courtyard, she suddenly remembered Axian. If she didn’t wake him up, he would definitely interrogate her later about why she hadn’t woken him up to come along. So, Xia Dabao ran to wake Axian, whose reaction was nearly identical to hers. The moment he heard Little Black was giving birth, he sprang from his bed, and the two siblings rushed out disheveled.
Although the two households were only separated by a fish pond, their gates faced different directions and they still had a bit of a walk. Xia Dabao, annoyed by Axian’s slow pace, simply picked him up and ran all the way to Little Black’s Kennel.
It was just starting to get light, but there were already several people crowded around the kennel. Zhao Datu and Lanlan were there; Tian Xiaobei was there; Zhao Ershen and his wife were also present.
Zhao Ershen’s wife seemed very anxious, "Hubby, do you think Little Black can safely deliver her puppies?"
Zhao Ershen said, "Giving birth to puppies is like you women giving birth to children, isn’t it? Asking me about it is completely unnecessary."
Zhao Ershen’s wife was somewhat resentful.
Xia Dabao and Axian squeezed their way to the front. Originally, Zhao Datu was standing there, but after Xia Dabao pushed her way through, Zhao Datu was squeezed to the side. Yet he didn’t dare to utter a word and even gave up his spot to Xia Dabao.
Xia Dabao quickly spotted Little Black, who seemed to be in a lot of pain, her belly heaving in and out as she let out whimpers and strained from time to time.
Zhao Datu, who had likely witnessed animals giving birth before, pointed to the mother dog and said, "The belly’s starting to contract; she should be close to delivering. They should come out soon."
Tian Xiaobei, who had been quiet up to that point, suddenly spoke up, "That’s called contractions."
"What are contractions?" asked Axian.
Tian Xiaobei started to explain, "Contractions are when the uterus inside these animals starts moving rhythmically during childbirth, which helps with delivering the offspring."
"Ah, I see. Brother Xiaobei, you know so much," Axian praised Tian Xiaobei, but Tian Xiaobei didn’t seem the least bit arrogant, as if he had known all this all along.
Xia Dabao also admired Tian Xiaobei with a glance. She had grown up in the village and didn’t know these things, yet Tian Xiaobei, a city dweller, did. It was truly remarkable.
Seeing the look of admiration in Xia Dabao’s eyes, Zhao Datu turned towards Tian Xiaobei and then fiercely said, "What are you doing here gawking? Have you forgotten you’re supposed to cut weeds for the fishpond today? Let me tell you, after cutting weeds, you still need to go up the mountain and chop firewood. If you don’t bring back two loads of firewood, don’t expect to eat tonight!"
Tian Xiaobei immediately looked at Zhao Datu, with a clear spark of anger in his eyes.
"What are you looking at me for? You don’t agree? Just because the village chief came to your house and put in a good word for you doesn’t mean you can shirk your work. I’ll tell you, even if the Jade Emperor himself came down, you’d still have to work and listen to me!"
Zhao Ershen’s wife hurried over to speak up for Tian Xiaobei, "Datu, the village chief... after all, he’s the highest official in the village. He’s already said not to overwork, you should, you should remember you were there yesterday too. How, how could you forget so quickly?"
Zhao Ershen’s wife spoke too timidly, completely lacking any deterrent force. Zhao Datu was not convinced at all, "Auntie, it’s not whatever the village chief says goes. The chief hasn’t provided us with rice or flour in his stead, so why should we have to listen to the chief?"
