Chapter 1109: Chapter 1110: Farewell

The Imperial Concubine wept as she clasped Xiaoye’s arm, "Then, what if your mother never tells you where Nan Feng is?"

"Then Xiaoye will search to the ends of the earth," Xiaoye said with tranquility and nonchalance, but the determination in his heart was crystal clear to the Imperial Concubine.

The Imperial Concubine looked at Xiaoye, feeling her heart slowly sinking. It was a long while before she finally said, distressedly, "Alright, I’ll tell you where Nan Feng is, but what about your father? He’s still sick; are you not going to care for him anymore?"

...

At night.

Nangong Nini was about to sleep when she saw a shadow flit past the window. She instinctively glanced outside and then heard a cat’s meow.

Her heart leaped with joy.

This was a secret signal they had used as children. They had heard adults discussing what to do if you were caught eavesdropping and accidentally stepped on something that made noise; someone had said to imitate a cat’s meow. That way, others would mistake it for a cat’s presence and not suspect a person. But Nangong Nini loved cats the most; if she discovered a cat, she would definitely have to take a look. Thus, imitating a cat’s meow became their secret code.

Fortunately, the Crown Prince was not in the Palace that day, so Nangong Nini was able to sneak out through the window. The garden outside was usually empty; she believed that Xiaoye had managed to enter using his excellent light body technique.

After climbing through the window, Nangong Nini also grabbed a sock for some reason.

She tiptoed to the middle of the courtyard and walked up behind Xiaoye, who turned around at the same time.

"Brother," Nangong Nini was about to shout but promptly covered her mouth to avoid being discovered.

"Nini," in the dim night, Xiaoye also looked at Nangong Nini quietly, his eyes shining with a faint light.

"Brother, you finally came to see me. We haven’t been able to have a proper talk," Nangong Nini said, her nose twitching as tears involuntarily streamed down her face. She stepped forward and hugged Xiaoye tightly before slowly letting go, "Brother, I’ve been longing to have a good chat with you."

"I know," Xiaoye looked at Nangong Nini, while pinching her earlobe gently, "I’m sorry for never having the time before, but I think now, if I don’t come to see you, I might never have the chance again."

Nangong Nini nodded, but then asked in confusion, "Brother, why won’t you have time later? Are you... leaving the Palace?"

Xiaoye simply said, "You’ve seen Nan Feng, right?"

"Yes, I have. Sister-in-law said that the two of you are now very affectionate, that she’s extremely important to you, more important than anything else," Nangong Nini spoke.

"But she’s not in the Palace anymore, so I need to go find her," Xiaoye said somberly.

"Not in the Palace? Where has she gone?" Nangong Nini asked. The last time she saw Nan Feng, Nan Feng mentioned that they planned to leave the Palace together one day, and that Xiaoye wouldn’t inherit the throne either.

Xiaoye’s gaze held a tinge of sorrow, "My mother sent her out of the Palace. You’re smart enough to guess the underlying reason."

"Then I understand," how could Nangong Nini not know, "Father wants you to marry Minister Jiang’s daughter and compete with the Crown Prince for the throne."

"Nini, I won’t fight with your husband for that position, and I have already made my stance clear long ago," Xiaoye said.

"I know; no one understands you better than I," Nangong Nini replied, already becoming sentimental.
