Chapter 1063: Chapter 863: Father and Son Reunited

Nan Feng looked at the Emperor, who seemed to be around fifty years old, tall with some beard—possibly ancient emperors were all preoccupied with state affairs, worrying about the court and the harem, and with so many concubines, it’s no wonder emperors tended not to live long. It made sense that as soon as an Emperor had an offspring, he would customarily establish a Crown Prince; those who delayed were surely the craftier ones.

As for this Emperor, Nan Feng felt that based on his appearance alone, he should be a man with convictions, strategies, but also some stubbornness.

In the past few months, the Emperor had been closely following the matter of warfare, in addition to the burdensome court affairs. Therefore, the last time he saw his son, Xiaoge, he was still lying in bed, only able to move his hands and head. Later, he heard reports that his son could walk on the ground but he had never been free to visit.

Now, as the Emperor entered the courtyard, his eyes immediately fell upon the tall man kneeling on one knee; he was momentarily startled.

Previously, when his son lay in bed unable to move, the Emperor thought he most resembled his own younger self. Now that he could walk, the Emperor found him even more similar.

"Your Son pays his respect to His Majesty," Xiaoge said, upon noticing the Emperor staring at him, and spoke again.

Although he had been unconscious earlier, his awareness had remained clear, fully conscious of everything he had been through after being poisoned.

"My dear son, please rise," the Emperor walked shakily to Xiaoge, personally helped him to his feet, and continued his fatherly concern.

As a young man, the Emperor himself had been a handsome figure in the court: tall and good-looking. He hadn’t expected Xiaoge to be even taller by a head. Now, looking at Xiaoge, he had to look up.

Observing Xiaoge’s movements and tone of voice as confident yet humble, full of integrity, he was indeed deeply favored by the Emperor.

Xiaoge then pulled Nan Feng, who was beside him, "Father, this is my wife, Nan Feng, and my daughter Xiaobao. Thank you for sending troops to rescue them from Dashun."

Nan Feng didn’t know how to address the Emperor. Calling him ’Father’ like Xiaoge did seemed awkward, so she held Xiaobao and gave a bow, "Thank Your Majesty for your rescue. Nan Feng will forever keep it in her heart."

The Emperor, after all, was a man nearing fifty, and with age came a fondness for children. Looking at Xiaobao, he suddenly wished to pinch her cheek and play with her, but Xiaobao was still shy with strangers and hid in Nan Feng’s arms at the sight of the Emperor.

The Emperor also felt somewhat awkward and quickly lost interest in Xiaobao. The children within the Palace were all taught to be close to the Emperor, to greet him properly, calling him ’Father’ or ’Grand Emperor,’ but Nan Feng’s child hardly acknowledged him at all.

The Emperor took another look at Nan Feng. She seemed to be a good lady, composed and dignified, but too thin. Although the current era didn’t praise overweight beauty, Nan Feng was very skinny, her skin darkened by the time she spent on the grasslands. Thus, the Emperor concluded that Nan Feng probably didn’t come from a wealthy family, lacking the appearance of prosperity.

The Emperor’s gaze moved from Nan Feng back to Xiaoge, "Son, how have you been feeling recently?"

"Much better now, thank you, Father, for your concern," Xiaoge replied sincerely.

"The wind is strong in the courtyard; let’s go inside and chat for a while?" the Emperor suggested.

"This way, Father."

Nan Feng watched as the father and son entered the house.
