Chapter 1007: Chapter 807: Logistics Expert
On another side, the purple sweet potatoes also showed good growth, and in addition, some buckwheat was planted; although these would take a few months to harvest, the villagers saw a glimmer of hope.
The issue of food had been tentatively resolved, but now the primary concern was money. Nan Feng did have a substantial sum in Fuzhou, but distant waters cannot quench a near fire, and a business opportunity needed to be found immediately.
After much thought, she had a sudden realization: she had connections in the Military Camp, so why not bring the sword casting business back and produce them in Shangzhi City?
Producing face masks was another avenue, which the idle women could take care of, and then sell them to other provinces.
Nan Feng was a woman of action and immediately had Song Cheng contact the Military Camp; they agreed the plan was feasible and could place orders directly from them. Since it was Wild Brother’s suggestion, no one dared to oppose.
Once Nan Feng got the response, she promptly arranged for someone to contact a blacksmithing and sword casting workshop and asked them to move their production to Shangzhi City. This resolved the employment issue for a portion of the population.
She then trial produced a batch of face masks and had someone take them to the now thriving Shouchun City, connecting with several rouge shops for trials. The Shopkeeper of one rouge shop found them quite good and placed an initial order. Nan Feng was delighted and immediately set about making them.
She invested all the money she made into buying food to distribute amongst the villagers.
The villagers were endlessly grateful to Nan Feng; they were no longer worried about an invasion by the Hu people, for they now had a little money to earn, and if the Hu people did come, they would have some funds for escape.
Amongst these people, Nan Feng selected a few particularly industrious individuals to be leaders and manage others. For instance, for blacksmithing, she chose a man named Qian Duoduo, and for the face masks, she picked two people, one man named Wan Toutou to manage transportation, and a woman named Wa Chunhua to oversee a group of female workers. These few were quite influential, literate, and could be trusted with bookkeeping.
Lady Song was concerned about Nan Feng and could not help asking during a meal, "Nan Feng, haven’t you been feeling tired recently? With the farming, overseeing the blacksmithing and the face masks, you must speak up if you are exhausted and not just endure it."
Nan Feng laughed and said, "Tired? Don’t you think, Lady Song, that ever since I started doing these things, I’ve been looking better? My appetite has even increased quite a bit."
Having said that, she scooped up several more mouthfuls of rice and stuffed in a couple bites of meat.
Lady Song smiled and said, "You’re right, you have always been hardworking and capable. When you first came here, you were cooped up in your room all day and seemed pale, but now you look much healthier."
"Yes, I can’t keep idle; if I do, I start having problems, so..." Nan Feng took another two bites of meat, "I need to go back tomorrow and teach those group leaders how to keep the books. To get them more enthusiastic about their work, I’m considering implementing a piece-rate system; the more they work, the more they earn, and if they work less, they earn less."
At this point, Lady Song’s tone carried a hint of melancholy as she said with a faint smile, "Nan Feng, I now understand why Wild Brother likes only you, because you are truly not an ordinary lady. To be honest, my daughter Song Xiaoyue once had feelings for Wild Brother, but he did not take an interest in her. Xiaoyue is a pampered and willful young lady, whereas your heart always carries the concerns of others. You’ve done so much for the people, while my Xiaoyue only knows how to enjoy life."
