Chapter 1857: Welcome Home, Son.
[Bennet Mansion]
One year later...
Time had passed in the blink of an eye, without anyone even noticing it. Each day, everything that had happened just a year ago felt like a distant memory.
It felt like a dream.
The only thing proving it wasn’t just their imagination was Atlas’s absence. He may not have been the loudest, but his absence grew louder each day. No one would say it, but they could all feel it.
So, on the days when their hearts longed for a family member, they simply did things that made them temporarily feel better. Just like right now.
Gathered in the Bennet Mansion’s family room were everyone: Allison, Charles, Jessa, Lester, Haines, Grace, Hugo, Kiara, Slater, Penny, Zoren, Nina, Finn, Yugi, Yuri, and even Mint and Benjamin. The last two were only there because Benjamin dragged Mint along.
And their faces? A mix of dismay and disbelief.
"A camp?" Penny repeated in disbelief. "Why a camp?"
Standing in front of them were Jessa and Allison. Jessa had her arms folded under her chest, nodding at them.
"Why a camp? Hah, Penny. Didn’t you read the pamphlet?" Jessa nodded enthusiastically. "It’s basically a place for healing, a place of relaxation, and learning."
Hugo narrowed his eyes. "I don’t need healing."
"Of all the people in here, you need healing the most," Jessa pointed at him. "Just look at poor Kiara. She doesn’t even know why she’s here. Say, did he kidnap you again?"
Kiara, seated beside Hugo, smiled awkwardly. Jessa wasn’t wrong. Kiara had no idea what she was doing there when she and Hugo were on a short break. After all, Hugo had tricked her into going somewhere, only to end up at the marriage bureau. But that wasn’t the reason they were on a short break; it was something about what he said, which she didn’t like at all.
"Anyway, we signed up for this camp a while ago," Jessa rolled her eyes. "Initially, it was for our boys because, well, we’re concerned. But since Atlas is somewhere in the world doing whatever evil things he could, and Hugo’s having a divorce, we thought it’s a good time to take this vacation."
She said all that, but then Slater, who was reading the pamphlet for the camp, interrupted.
"But Auntie Jessa, it says here their program focuses on finding the right partner for you," Slater blurted out, earning a glare from Jessa.
"Just look at the next page," Jessa remarked, and Slater did, only to find more details on the problems this camp promised to fix.
"They have some programs for couples," Allison chimed in gently. "I think all of us should go."
It would be bad if it were just Slater and Yugi, the only single guys there. After all, they signed up because of the Bennet boys and Yugi. Both Allison and Jessa were concerned about them not being with anyone for the rest of their lives.
"It’s character-building therapy," Penny suspiciously muttered, eyeing her mothers with doubt. "Auntie, Renren and I are okay. We don’t need any marriage counseling."
"You both need it," Jessa answered, her tone carrying a bit of threat. "Trust me."
Penny gulped and glanced at her husband. Zoren just smiled and shrugged.
"I think it’s a nice place," Nina chimed in, reading the pamphlet with a smile. She perked up and faced Finn squarely. "We should go. It’s been a while since we went on a getaway."
"This is not a getaway. It’s a rehab -- ack!" Yugi almost bit his tongue as his mother’s hand flew to the back of his hand for a smack.
"She needs it too," Hugo raised a hand, his finger pointing at Kiara. "But I’m coming to save our marriage."
Kiara clicked her tongue and glared at him, but her trickster of a husband beamed at her.
"Should we go?" Grace hummed, her eyes fixed on her beloved Haines.
Haines chuckled, holding her hand before his other hand reached for her bulging belly. "Should we?"
As Grace and Haines whispered to each other, their eyes beaming with hearts, Jessa shook her head in disbelief.
"Those two definitely need it," Jessa blurted out, only to get slightly elbowed by Allison. "They are too in love. They both don’t need this much love."
"They’re in love," Allison whispered. "Just let them be."
Suddenly, Yugi’s voice came and died just as fast. "But Mom—"
"You’re going, young man," Jessa warned, taking no for an answer. "You and Yuri. The two of you need to learn that there’s more than just your careers."
Yuri, whose eye bags were darker than her hair, looked up at her mother. "Like?"
"Like... life, duh?" Jessa scoffed at her daughter before glaring at Mint. "Young lady, tell your husband to give my daughter a break! He’s working her to the bone!"
"Husband?" Mint blinked, and before she could even think about who her husband was, Benjamin jumped from his seat.
"Auntie, what do you mean—Mint, did you marry Ray without me knowing?"
"Huh?!" Her face twisted. "In his dreams!"
Jessa shook her head, letting those two argue as they always did. She then faced Allison, sighing, almost giving up on this.
"I swear, if not for the fact that we paid for this camp, I wouldn’t even bother," she said, making Allison chuckle.
"It’s going to be fine," said Allison, turning to everyone with a smile. But as she did, she caught Butler Jen by the entrance.
"Madam." A look of surprise was plastered on Butler Jen’s face, making everyone turn to him.
They furrowed their brows upon catching the look on his face. Then, he stepped aside and revealed the person standing behind him.
For a second, time stopped for everyone as they stared at the figure standing just inside the family room.
"What camp?" he asked.
In that second, everyone’s faces lit up—especially Penny, Slater, and Hugo.
"FIRST BROTHER!!" they shouted, jumping from their seats to embrace him. "First Brother!"
Like children, the three of them threw themselves at Atlas, grabbing his arms and even his legs. Atlas chuckled as he glanced at his siblings before shifting his gaze to those inside.
"Oh, Atlas!" Allison breathed out, rushing to him. Following her was Charles, and soon, everyone gathered around him.
In no time, everyone stood in front of him, a mix of surprise and joy on their faces.
He smiled shortly and whispered, eyes on his father and mother. "I’m home."
Allison’s and Charles’s hearts clenched a bit. Teary-eyed, they muttered,
"Welcome home, son."
