Chapter 1854: A long misunderstanding finally coming to an end
The night continued as everyone celebrated Nina and Finn. However, hours later, Finn and Nina would have to leave the venue for their honeymoon. With that, some people had to leave as well to send them off.
"We’ll be back," Hugo remarked as he rose from his seat, wanting to send off his sister since their parents had already gone with them.
Zoren also rose from his seat because he was family. He had to send off his sister-in-law and the new brother-in-law of their family. But as they stood, Max suddenly slammed his glass onto the table.
"No," Max huffed, making everyone pause.
Slowly, everyone at the table (Hugo, Zoren, and Dean) turned their eyes to Max. Dean remained seated because, well, he had no reason to send off the newlyweds.
Max planted his hands on the table and pushed himself up. At this point, he had already drunk too much and was a bit tipsy.
Once he was on his feet, he pointed at Hugo. "Hugo, I’m challenging you to a duel."
"Huh?" Hugo cocked his head, confused. "You want to... fight me?"
"A basketball duel," Max clarified. "If you win, do whatever you want—ask me anything. But if you lose, break up with her."
Hugo blinked, while the others at the table furrowed their brows.
Meanwhile, at Penny’s table, all the ladies had already risen to their feet to send off Nina. However, as they did, they noticed something was going on at Hugo’s table.
"What’s going on there?" Penny wondered, darting her eyes between Hugo and Max. "Seems like there’s going to be a fight."
"Oh, God..." Lily pinched the bridge of her nose, already guessing what was happening. "That idiot."
Ginnie and Kiara turned to Lily, making her glance at them and sigh heavily. Grace, on the other hand, glanced at the ladies and then at the foolish Max.
Grace couldn’t help but chuckle. "Let’s go get your men."
With that, the ladies approached the men’s table just in time to hear Max’s challenge to Hugo.
"But if you lose, break up with her."
Kiara paused mid-step, her brows knitting. "Excuse me?"
Max huffed and glanced at her, but didn’t feel the need to care about her opinion. He briefly glanced at Ginnie before locking eyes with Hugo again.
"What do you say?" he taunted.
Hugo frowned slightly. "No."
"What?"
"I don’t want to," Hugo clicked his tongue. "Ask something else, and I might reconsider. But I’m not as crazy as Penny to put my woman on the stake."
Penny deadpanned. "I’m not like that — shut up."
"Max, if you’re drunk, just sleep," Kiara frowned as well. "We’ll just pretend you didn’t even bring up such an absurd thing."
"Absurd?" Max snorted. "Penny bet on her marriage not long ago, so I don’t think it’s that absurd."
Zoren blinked and then intuitively glanced at his wife. Penny, who hadn’t expected such a reveal tonight, shook her head profusely.
"It’s not what you think it is!" she waved, shaking her head. "Don’t listen to them!"
"She did," Dean leaned toward Zoren and whispered like a devil, smirking.
"Max, you’re drunk," Hugo pushed himself away from the table and sighed. "I suggest you sleep it off."
Otherwise, Hugo might end up knocking him out. But as Hugo took a step forward, Max clenched his teeth and took a step to stop him.
"Hugo, are you this dense?" Max’s chest heaved, hands clenched tightly. "How could you act like you care when you don’t even realize you’re hurting someone?"
"..." Hugo looked back at him, catching the frustration in Max’s eyes. "So, it’s true? You... like me?"
"What?"
"I’m sorry, but I’m not like that," Hugo clarified, pointing at Dean. "Why don’t you try with him?"
Dean’s face twisted, a vein protruding on his forehead. "Hey, you want to die?"
But Dean wasn’t the only one getting frustrated. Max’s frustration grew with every word that came out of Hugo’s mouth. Max knew he wasn’t in a position to meddle, and he had no right to intervene with Kiara and Hugo.
However, if he didn’t speak up now, Hugo and Kiara might end up married!
If that happened, there would be no more chances.
"Gosh..." Lily ground her teeth, and when she couldn’t take it anymore, she marched toward Max.
As soon as Max was within Lily’s reach, her hand flew.
SMACK!
"Ack!" Max almost bit his tongue as a sudden force hit the back of his head. He touched the spot, turning to see Lily’s eyes burning. "What the hell?!"
"You idiot," she hissed in frustration. "Gosh. You make me cry in frustration."
"What’s... going on?" Ginnie asked, and everything was happening so fast, and it was confusing for her.
"This guy’s an idiot, you get me?" Lily turned to Ginnie. "He’s making a fuss because Senior Hugo is now dating Kiara."
Everyone blinked, eyes on Lily.
"Because he believes you’re hurting," Lily rolled her eyes, catching the confusion on everyone’s face. "He thinks you’ve been in love with him."
Ginnie blinked innocently, catching Kiara, Hugo, and everyone else turning to her again. Then, the same question flew out of their mouths simultaneously.
"You’re in love with him?"
Hugo: "You’re in love with me?"
Deep lines appeared between her brows before Ginnie answered. "No."
Hearing her answer, Max frowned. "Ginnie, why deny it? Lily said—"
"I don’t know what Lily said, but I never liked Senior Hugo that way," Ginnie clarified, shaking her head. "Wait. Is that why you’ve been arranging those dinners...?"
Max pressed his lips into a thin line, making Ginnie chuckle.
"You’re an idiot. He’s not the one I like," she said, facing the ladies. "Let’s go."
The ladies nodded at her and followed, but not without commenting,
"Idiot," Penny blurted out, glaring at him. Her anger toward him stemmed from the fact that Max just exposed her secret.
"You’re an idiot, Max," Kiara also commented.
"Idiotic boy," Lily spat as she walked with them.
Grace assessed him and smirked, commenting before following the rest. "You’re not an idiot, but you do have a missing brain cell."
"Idiot," Hugo also commented as he followed the ladies. "Feels nice to call someone that because I’m usually the one on the receiving end."
Zoren cast Max a cold side-eye and muttered, "Lunatic."
Dean hadn’t planned to send the newlyweds off, but since everyone was leaving, he thought it would be nice to join them. Why? Because going with them would give him the chance to say:
"What’s the use of having a brain if you don’t use it?" Dean sneered. "Idiot."
Max scoffed, watching everyone walk away from him after calling him an idiot.
"Idiot?" he repeated, glaring at Lily. "But Lily just said..."
He trailed off when he recalled what Ginnie said just now.
[He’s not the one I like.]
Deep lines appeared between his brows as he remembered Lily’s hints and Ginnie’s remarks about the guy she had loved for all these years. And now that he thought about it, Ginnie described... him, not Hugo..
"..." Slowly, Max’s eyes widened as he held his breath, sobering up in an instant. "Shit—damn! I’m an idiot!"
Turning his head in the direction the group went, he jumped up and jogged to follow them. "Ginnie, wait! WAIT! What do you mean by that?! Hey! If not Hugo, who were you talking about then?!"
"Was it—was it ME?!" he shouted with slight glee, making Ginnie chuckle as she shook her head, hearing his yelling behind them. "Ginnie!! Do you really like me!? ME!?"
Max didn’t get an answer, but somehow, he knew his own spring was on its way.
Just like that, the long misunderstanding between them had finally come to an end. And tonight marked the start of Ginnie and Max’s happily ever after. Although Max would want Lily banned from their wedding.
After all, she was the one who started this long misunderstanding and fueled his misery.
