Chapter 268: Awakened

Chapter 268: Chapter 268: Awakened

Over the years, he had gotten into the habit of wandering aimlessly in unfamiliar places, like a piece of drifting duckweed, with no sense of belonging. Just like a walking corpse.

"Mmm..."

An Yin, who was deep asleep, let out a series of soft murmurs, then her head tilted and she fell heavily onto Meng Heming’s shoulder.

By the time he realized, he felt a warm body temperature spreading through his shoulder to his entire body. This feeling made his previously barren heart feel extremely full, as if the young girl leaning on his shoulder was his entire world, bringing a wave of strong emotion within him.

Meng Heming carefully turned his head, afraid of waking her up. Her lively eyes were already closed, yet he couldn’t forget the eyes that, when open, looked so much like someone else’s.

Perhaps he was too entranced by his gaze upon her, Meng Heming hadn’t noticed the faint bloodshot streaks in his deep eyes.

Across the aisle, on the other side, sat a young couple. Since getting on the bus, the girl had been tightly held in the boy’s arms. They chatted incessantly, with the girl occasionally bursting into sweet laughter.

"Hehe..."

Amidst their laughter, the young girl resting on his shoulder moved slightly, her brows gently furrowing, evidently disturbed by the sudden laughter affecting her sleep.

Meng Heming slowly turned his head, looking at the couple not far away, his eyes icy cold. "Excuse me, could you please keep it down in a public place?" His voice was deep and magnetic, seemingly a suggestion, yet more like a warning.

The young couple, naturally shy, fell silent immediately upon hearing the man’s words.

The bus interior returned to quiet, making it much more comfortable.

In a daze, An Yin seemed to return to her childhood. She had just finished school, carrying a heavy backpack as she left the classroom. Watching as her classmates ran out of the classroom, her eyes filled with disappointment. She knew those classmates had parents taking turns to pick them up, but she could only ever see her mom’s figure.

Slowly, she walked out of the school gate, and in her confusion, she seemed to see a tall man waving in her direction.

"Daddy’s little sweetheart, come here!" His every word was clear and strong.

Even from a distance, An Yin couldn’t clearly see the man’s face, yet she knew very well he was calling for her.

"Daddy..."

"Daddy..."

Without thinking, her small body ran towards that tall figure. Just as she was about to reach him, in the blink of an eye, he appeared far away.

In her dream, she could clearly feel her dad right in front of her, but every time she reached out, her hands met nothing.

"Daddy..."

"Liar..."

She murmured intermittently.

Her words were like a sharp axe, chopping at Meng Heming’s heart. Though he and the young girl were merely passing acquaintances, hearing her call for her father repeatedly in her dream, he found his heart twisting painfully, without warning.

Meng Heming didn’t know what the young girl had gone through, but her constant calls for her father stirred a deep envy for the girl’s dad within him.

The young girl was dainty and soft, and as her dad, he must have cherished her tenderly in the palm of his hand.

Meng Heming couldn’t help but think back to when the conductor asked him from where he wanted to purchase a ticket. He had no idea. Normally, he would glance at a random place name and report it, but this time was different. The young girl in front of him seemed to possess some magic, leading him to buy the same ticket without hesitation.

At that moment, the young girl was still resting her head on his shoulder.

Under his thick eyebrows were a pair of brooding eyes. His facial contours were deep and solid, showing the perseverance polished by harsh weather.

"Everyone, please get off at the gas station ahead for a break. The bus needs to refuel, so if you need to use the restroom, go ahead." The driver’s voice was loud and clear.

"Oh."

"Alright."

"Perfect timing, I need the restroom."

Soon, the passengers began to chat.

With all the noise, An Yin only felt her head spinning. When she opened her dazed eyes, she saw an advertisement attached to the seat in front of her.

[For men’s health, XX Hospital is the best choice!]

The big characters were hard to ignore.

An Yin felt her neck tingling and instinctively nuzzled the spot she was leaning on.

"Awake?"

A deep voice sounded above her head.

An Yin stiffened all over. Looking up, she met a pair of eyes as cold as a frigid pool. Even more embarrassing, she realized she had been leaning on his shoulder.

An Yin quickly bounced away, stammering, "So-rry, I didn’t-mean to."

Out of his view, her cheeks blushed a deep red, thankfully hidden by her mask.

Meng Heming looked at her nervous appearance, suppressing the cold aura around him, trying to appear warm and approachable.

"Don’t be afraid." He tried to comfort her. "You seemed to be sleeping soundly, so I didn’t wake you."

"I’m really sorry," An Yin continued to apologize.

Perhaps freshly awake, her long eyelashes were coated with a thin layer of mist, and each time she blinked, her eyes resembled clear springs, pure and bright.

"It’s really no big deal, don’t worry about it," Meng Heming’s tightly pressed lips formed a firm line, exuding maturity and steadiness.

Seeing that he didn’t mind, An Yin’s anxiety gradually eased.

At this point, the driver had stopped the bus.

The passengers disembarked in an orderly fashion.

Meng Heming noticed the young girl’s confused look and explained, "The bus needs refueling, so for safety, we have to get off." As he spoke, he was already standing up.

"Oh." An Yin had been sleeping so deeply, she hadn’t heard the driver’s announcement clearly.

She quickly got up.

Meng Heming didn’t rush to leave. He stepped back in the aisle, "You go first."

"Thank you." An Yin looked up at his tall figure.

Both wearing masks, they walked out of the bus, one in front, the other behind, one tall and one short.

The young girl moved with graceful steps, her slender figure captivating. Her long black hair tied into a ponytail spilled over her shoulders. Even with a mask on, her delicate oval face made her stand out.

After disembarking, An Yin was just about to head to the restroom.

Meng Heming’s gaze wandered, seeing her following others in the direction of the restroom, his eyes gradually drifted into the distance.

Restroom.

Both stalls were occupied, so she stood by the sink, waiting.

At this moment, a frail old lady made her way to the restroom, glancing around before struggling to lift the cloth bag she held.

Just then, a stall door opened. The old lady looked at An Yin, noticing she remained standing, and said with a wrinkled smile, "You go ahead."

"Granny, you go first, I’ll wait."

An Yin’s voice carried a soft warmth, reminiscent of the clear trill of a bird, melodic and charming.
