Chapter 41: Chapter 41: The One with Ulterior Motives Is Master Pedro
"Are you crazy? What’s so great about those gory and brutal horror comics?"
Miss Scott remained indifferent, lazily lifting her eyelids and countered, "Spending so much money on a few books, a piece of paper, what’s so good about that?"
"You don’t know shit!" Jesse Johnson’s eyes were red with rage, his emotions stirred up, "This stuff can’t be measured by value!"
"To those who don’t care, it looks like waste paper."
"So what?"
Miss Scott chuckled lightly and said unhurriedly, "This kind of thing with indeterminate value, its meaning of existence is jointly granted by the giver and the receiver. No matter how you obtain it, from the start, its value and meaning have nothing to do with you. What’s the point of forcibly taking it?"
"..."
Jesse Johnson was momentarily stunned by her words.
After a while, his emotions gradually subsided, but his eyes were still red as he glared at her, "Why are you so annoying?!"
Lifting her eyebrows, Miss Scott said, "After all, I’m charming."
"..."
Jesse Johnson was dumbfounded by her narcissism, momentarily at a loss for words.
At this moment—
"Miss Scott, Master Johnson."
Butler Loxley finally arrived.
Rubbing his nose, Jesse Johnson forced his emotions down, took a step back, and nodded at Butler Loxley, "Grandpa Loxley, you arrived just in time!"
As he spoke, he provocatively glanced at Miss Scott.
"Master Johnson came for Miss Turner, right?" Butler Loxley approached with a smile.
"Let me tell you—"
Just as Jesse Johnson was about to complain about Miss Scott, he realized something midway and was surprised, "Ah, no, how do you know?"
Butler Loxley’s smile was gentle, "Otherwise, I can’t think of any other reason for Master Johnson to come looking for Master Pedro."
"..."
This time, Jesse Johnson felt a bit embarrassed.
Butler Loxley was right; he usually avoided the three Langley brothers. Even when he visited the Langley Residence during holidays, he would avoid them if possible.
He came specifically this time to find Pedro Langley for the sake of Lily Turner.
Lily Turner’s new drama wrapped up filming, but she hasn’t received any new announcements. Jesse Johnson sensed something was amiss, and upon inquiry, he found out that Fernwood Entertainment had suspended all of Lily Turner’s work due to the previous "assistant incident."
In Jesse Johnson’s view, Lily Turner was entirely the victim in this matter and didn’t deserve such treatment, which infuriated him.
When he met Lily Turner for lunch today and saw her dejected look, he felt even more upset. After canceling all his plans for the day, he sent Lily Turner home, found out Pedro Langley’s current address, and raced over.
Pedro Langley is the CEO of Fernwood Entertainment and has the authority to reinstate all of Lily Turner’s work.
Taking a deep breath, Jesse Johnson awkwardly asked, "Is Third Brother home?"
"He’s not."
"Is he at the company?"
"Master Johnson, you should know what kind of temper Master Pedro has." Butler Loxley looked at him briefly and said amicably, "If you don’t want Miss Turner to be in trouble again, you’d better not mention this to him."
Jesse Johnson frowned tightly, feeling unwilling, "But Lily was wronged."
Butler Loxley smiled, "Some things can’t be judged by partial information."
Jesse Johnson became anxious, "You don’t even know her!"
"I don’t need to know, nor can I make decisions. But, as a word of advice, the human heart is sinister. Master Johnson, be cautious."
With a slight nod to Jesse Johnson, Butler Loxley turned to Miss Scott and said, "Miss Scott, shall we go?"
Miss Scott nodded.
The elderly man and the young woman walked away side by side.
Jesse Johnson was left standing there, watching their backs with a feeling of discomfort. As they walked onto the cobblestone path, he suddenly raised his voice and shouted—
"Wait!"
The two paused at the sound.
Jesse Johnson hurried over, circled in front of them, and blocked their way.
Butler Loxley lifted his eyes, his calm gaze making Jesse Johnson feel a chill, and the blood boiling in him cooled down considerably.
"Does Master Johnson have anything else?" Butler Loxley asked.
Glancing at Miss Scott out of the corner of his eye, Jesse Johnson pressed his lips and lowered his tone, "Grandpa Loxley, I have something to tell you."
Butler Loxley said calmly, "Just say it."
With another glance at Miss Scott, Jesse Johnson gritted his teeth and said bluntly, "Grandpa Loxley, you should be cautious when making friends. She—"
Pointing a finger at Miss Scott, Jesse Johnson said irresponsibly, "She just admitted to me that she’s only getting close to you to get to Third Brother. As Third Brother’s butler, you should be careful not to be used by someone sinister."
Miss Scott: "..." Speechless.
Upon hearing this, Butler Loxley’s expression changed slightly, but upon seeing Miss Scott remain calm and unaffected by Jesse Johnson’s words, he sighed in relief.
His expression cooled a bit, and the smile on his face waned slightly as he said calmly and composedly, "Thank you for the concern, Master Johnson. I’ve lived long enough to judge people quite accurately."
"Grandpa Loxley, trust me!" Jesse Johnson said indignantly, "She’s a minor celebrity willing to spend money to live in Cloudwater Haven, don’t you question her intentions? The fact that she happens to live in the same building as Third Brother, haven’t you considered she might have ulterior motives?"
Butler Loxley: "..." Completely at a loss.
"Hey," Miss Scott raised her eyebrows and said leisurely, "what you say makes sense."
Jesse Johnson strained his neck and glared at her warily, "What do you mean?"
What does she mean?
Miss Scott began to suspect that Pedro Langley’s moving into Cloudwater Haven had an ’ulterior motive’ element.
"Master Johnson, you misunderstood; Master Pedro only moved in later." Butler Loxley chuckled softly as if joking, "According to your theory, the one with ulterior motives should actually be Master Pedro."
Narrowing her eyes, Miss Scott looked at Butler Loxley.
Butler Loxley maintained an unreadable open-faced smile.
Jesse Johnson widened his eyes, shocked and unable to find the right words.
Fearing Jesse Johnson might say something else to upset Miss Scott, Butler Loxley said, "If there’s nothing else, we’ll be on our way. Master Johnson should head back early too."
The two continued walking out.
The soft and bright sunlight fell, bringing a slight warmth as it touched the skin. Miss Scott took a glance at the sky; the previously overcast sky now had some clouds parted, revealing a corner of the sun, casting down rays of light.
She wondered if the weather would remain this good in the coming days.
Miss Scott’s thoughts were somewhat vague.
Christmas Eve, it’s coming soon.
...
Jesse Johnson was stunned in place. After a long pause, he unraveled a thread in his chaotic mind—
Butler Loxley was definitely fooled by Miss Scott!
Miss Scott was absolutely targeting Third Brother!
Just when Jesse Johnson felt he had seen through the truth and was filled with indignation, the phone rang once more. Suppressing his restless emotions, he took out his phone.
"Bro, after much persuasion, someone finally agreed! The price is set at eighty thousand, how’s that?"
