Chapter 35: Chapter 35: Nora Scott, You’re Not an Illegitimate Daughter
"Can I ask you if you want to come back to the Scott family with me?"
The voice trembled, filled with subtle hope, nervousness, caution, and probing, lacking any confidence.
The corridor was silent, the lights dim, as if veiled by a layer of fog, casting a hazy glow.
The man stood opposite Nora Scott, shadows enveloping her. A gust of cool wind swept through, lifting her hair. As her eyelids rose, the light fell into her dark eyes, instantly turning into frost. Light dyed with coldness, transformed into sharp swords.
The corners of her eyes, narrow long eyes, were covered with clear mockery, proud yet indifferent.
She sneered, "Who are you?"
A cool voice, laced with a tone of ridicule, full of disdain and amusement.
The man’s expression was extremely complex, urgently shouting, "Nora—"
"Don’t get close to me."
The words cut him off, a few impatient words immediately silencing the man.
A moment of quiet.
Finally, as if he had made a decision, the man raised his head, his expression both resolute and gentle.
"Over the years, I... I haven’t taken good care of you; it’s all my fault, I’m sorry."
He took a breath, slightly calming his emotions, his eyes steadily on her, continued, "I just want to tell you that now I have the ability to take you back and take care of you, so you won’t suffer. If you want, you can be the legitimate young lady of the Scott family."
He was very sincere and very nervous.
Nora looked at him.
This man was named Ernesto Scott.
He is said to be her father.
Two years ago, after Antonio Easton was hospitalized, Ernesto Scott came to visit, and Nora met him for the first time.
After a while, Nora let out a cold laugh, "Acknowledging a illegitimate daughter, aren’t you afraid of being laughed at?"
"No..." Ernesto Scott took a breath, his face slightly pale, shock appearing in his eyes, "Who said you’re an illegitimate daughter?"
"Evelyn Easton."
"She..."
After a long while, Ernesto Scott frowned deeply, as if trapped in memory, muttering, "She resents me."
"I’m not interested in your affairs."
Nora spoke lightly, not intending to drag on with him.
Nora’s thoughts were abruptly pulled back, Ernesto Scott blocked her path, urgently explaining, "You’re not an illegitimate daughter, your mother and I had a registered marriage, she was legitimately my wife."
Raising an eyebrow, Nora mocked, uninterestedly asked, "So what?"
"I didn’t expect her to deceive you. This matter, you have the right to know."
The cool wind traversed the corridor, Ernesto Scott’s voice calmed down, patiently narrating the long-buried story to Nora.
A long time passed.
Ernesto Scott said in a deep voice, "I hope you can consider carefully. Your grandfather is also worried about you."
*
The hospital room door was pushed open again.
Nora stepped inside.
Antonio Easton looked up at the sound, seeing her, without any surprise.
"Easton, Evelyn Easton wasn’t someone you picked up?" Nora walked straight to the bedside, asked coldly.
"What do you mean?"
"I’m wondering if you’re really my grandfather."
"..."
Antonio Easton’s mouth slightly twitched.
Nora raised an eyebrow, "You’re letting Evelyn Easton fool me?"
Antonio Easton gathered the drawings on the table, "She said it, and you believed it. What can I do?"
He knew Nora referred to "Evelyn Easton said she’s an illegitimate daughter."
Nora was amused by him, "I was not even five years old then."
Knocking the stacked drawings on the table, Antonio Easton put them down, asked, "For the past two years, haven’t you wondered why I didn’t break Ernesto Scott’s leg?"
Glancing at his sparse white hair and aging face, although Nora harbored resentment, her tone softened, "You would have to be able to break it first."
"..."
After a brief silence, Antonio Easton looked at her, asked, "What do you think?"
"I have no thoughts," Nora hooked a chair with her toe, sat down, said lightly, "I’m not lacking anyone to pamper me."
"Isn’t it better to have one more person to pamper you?"
Nora laughed, "So you know it’s ’one more’?"
Antonio Easton understood her meaning.
Indeed, Ernesto Scott was devoted to Evelyn Easton and Nora.
But, not the Scott family.
Back then, when Evelyn Easton was with Ernesto Scott, the Scott family strongly disagreed. Later, Ernesto Scott was determined, secretly registered a marriage with Evelyn Easton outside, and when expecting Nora, brought Evelyn Easton back home.
Unfortunately, the Scott family did not recognize them because of this.
The Scott family did not favor Evelyn Easton, ridiculed her, schemed in dark corners, and once she gave birth to a daughter, it only intensified.
At the time, Ernesto Scott was young, had no authority at home, couldn’t protect his wife and daughter. Evelyn Easton suffered postnatal depression, was humiliated, after a year, couldn’t withstand it, firmly divorced Ernesto Scott, and took Nora out of the Scott family.
And Scott family went even further, forcefully arranged a marriage for Ernesto Scott just a month later.
Now, not to mention the Scott family, even at Ernesto Scott, there’s a second wife, along with a son and daughter.
"This matter, don’t rush it, think again," Antonio Easton said unhurriedly.
Nora said nothing.
She slightly lowered her eyelids, quieted down, her gaze fixed on the stacked drawings, deeply engrossed, not knowing what she’s thinking.
After a long while, she softly called, "Easton."
"Hmm?"
"Luckily Evelyn Easton isn’t here anymore."
Antonio Easton huffed, "If you say this anywhere, it’s extremely rebellious."
Despite the words, his tone didn’t truly blame her.
Nora said, "She didn’t treat me like a daughter, I didn’t treat her as a mother. Extremely rebellious, it doesn’t count."
Since understanding things, she rarely thought about actually having parents, not having jumped out from a stone.
When Evelyn Easton left the Scott family, she dumped her onto Antonio Easton.
In her memory, Evelyn Easton only told her, she had no father, no mother, shouldn’t have been born, extra people had no right to demand anything. She was an illegitimate daughter secretly raised outside, that’s why she’s named Nora.
At five years old, Evelyn Easton found a new home, completely severed ties with the past.
Nora last saw her half a year ago.
At her funeral.
*
Cloudwater Haven.
Driving the car into the underground parking lot, Nora carried a stack of books into the elevator.
The elevator slowly ascended, while cramps in her lower abdomen attacked in waves, Nora leaned against a side, lowered her head slightly, her brows furrowed, fine sweat appeared at her temple.
"Ding—"
The elevator halted, the door opened to both sides.
The books bound with a rope, her fingers hooked around the rope slowly tightened, the skin on the back of her hand nearly transparent, pale blue veins clearly visible.
She stepped out of the elevator, just walked two steps, her wrist was suddenly grabbed.
Both painful and weak, Nora was extremely annoyed, as she coldly looked over, she reversed the grip on the other’s wrist, just wanted to apply force, her gaze fell on Pedro Langley’s face, her actions paused.
She asked, "What are you doing?"
Waiting for the elevator, Pedro Langley, upon seeing Nora step out, subconsciously felt something was wrong, grabbed her wrist as she passed by.
Unexpectedly, the touch was icy, skin covered in a thin layer of sweat.
Looking at Nora, her brows tightly knitted, complexion pale, sweat dampened her soft hair...
With just a moment of hostility, he withdrew.
He frowned and asked, "What’s wrong with you?"
"Nothing." She let go of his hand, handed him the stack of books, said lightly, "These are for Loxley."
Finished talking, she walked away.
Yet, just half a step away, her arm was gripped again, forcibly pulled back.
