Chapter 46: Giving Her Proof
Chapter 46: Giving Her Proof
Emma rose from the sofa and saw the surveillance footage on the TV, showing the villa’s interior, with Emma herself moving around.
He had secretly installed cameras, and the footage was from yesterday! He had evidence all along!
The screen showed Emma cautiously picking green plants from the garden, then taking them into the kitchen to put in the juicer.
She was also seen selectively picking certain nuts from the table.
Damien paused the footage.
Emma’s breath grew ragged as she braced for the devil’s judgment.
Damien had already had the green plant from the garden displayed on the table.
With a loud "bang," the bottom of the pot shattered, a testament to Damien’s fury.
"Aloe vera!" Damien Sterling enunciated each syllable with deliberation.
Emma Hart was startled; he had recognized it.
Damien then leaned over a dish of mixed nuts and picked out one, "Almonds!"
Emma remained silent.
Damien slowly approached her, reaching out his hand.
Despite Emma’s attempts to dodge, he caught her effortlessly, forcefully tilting her chin up to meet his sharp, hawk-like gaze, cold and piercing.
"Aloe vera and almonds can induce miscarriage, Emma Hart. How meticulously cunning of you. If no one had noticed, would my child have been silently killed by you?"
Damien shook Emma’s chin forcefully. "You cruel woman!"
How could she bear to harm her own child? What was her heart made of?
Mrs. Harris stood by, gasping in shock, unable to believe what she was seeing.
Emma’s usually clear and bright eyes dimmed and lost their luster upon hearing Damien’s accusations.
Her well-crafted plans had been uncovered.
Was she malicious? She knew the child was innocent, but would the child really be happy after birth?
With a father who treated his mother in such a way, born to parents incapable of love, could the child ever find happiness?
Tears slid down Emma’s cheeks. It wasn’t that she was heartless; it was the man before her who was excessively brutal and cruel!
He had destroyed her life; was she supposed to let him continue to wreck her child’s life too?
Damien Sterling’s gaze suddenly shifted, falling on Mrs. Harris and the black-clad bodyguards nearby, his rage boiling over.
"All of you here, and not a single one of you noticed anything?"
Heads bowed in collective shame.
"Get out, all of you!" he barked.
This included Mrs. Harris, who immediately became flustered, pleading, "Sir, I have two kids to support. I can’t afford to lose this job. You know my son is in college, and my daughter needs surgery for her congenital illness, sir..."
Mrs. Harris was almost on her knees, begging. Emma Hart’s heart ached at the sight.
Yet, Damien Sterling showed no mercy or sympathy, as cold as ice.
Emma struggled free from Damien’s grip. "This isn’t Mrs. Harris’s fault. I acted alone; she didn’t know."
Damien’s eyebrows raised in disdainful mockery. "Playing the hero now? Did you think of others when you were plotting your schemes?"
"It should be only me you’re after!" Emma declared defiantly.
But such valor was useless against Damien. He was unmoved. "If you utter one more word, I’ll have them leave right now!"
He idly twirled his watch, a habitual gesture, as if nothing of consequence had happened.
His voice was calm and casual. "You think this is over, Emma Hart? You underestimate me."
Watching Damien’s retreating figure, Emma couldn’t guess his next move, but she sensed he wouldn’t let this go easily.
No one dared defy Damien Sterling’s orders.
By the afternoon, Mrs. Harris had packed up, ready to leave, and her replacement already awaited at the door.
Such was Damien’s ruthless efficiency and decisiveness.
Emma watched Mrs. Harris, her face streaked with tears, hair slightly grayed, looking older after the morning’s ordeal.
Emma Hart looked at Mrs. Harris with a heart full of sorrow and regret.
"Mrs. Harris, I’m so sorry, it’s my fault you’re in this situation."
Mrs. Harris, tears streaming down her face, responded, "Miss Emma, no one can stand against Mr. Sterling. You need to take care of yourself. I know you’re suffering, but... sometimes, our fate is just written for us."
Emma took out a few thousand dollars she had and tried to give it to Mrs. Harris, who refused to accept it.
Emma kept apologizing, over and over.
Watching Mrs. Harris leave, Emma couldn’t bear to look any longer.
Mrs. Harris had been the kindest person to her in this cold villa, offering her warmth time and again.
Yet, now Emma had cost her the job she needed to support her family.
Her fate? Did it really become fixed after meeting Damien Sterling?
Not long after Mrs. Harris left, Emma received a call from her grandmother.
"Emma, what’s happening? Why did your brother call saying the school won’t let him attend?"
"And why was your mother suddenly let go from her job? What’s going on? Do you know anything?"
"Can you ask Mr. Sterling about this? What are we going to do?"
"Grandma, what are you talking about?" Emma’s hands went limp, and her phone slipped to the floor.
She felt despair once again.
In just a couple of hours, Emma was certain all of this was Damien Sterling’s doing.
And the disaster that befell everyone was because of her.
The phone rang incessantly.
The usually pleasant ringtone now seemed to only amplify Emma Hart’s anxiety.
It was the tenth call from her grandmother.
Reluctantly, Emma answered the phone, furrowing her brow as she held it about five centimeters from her ear.
Even at that distance, her grandmother’s raging voice boomed, surprisingly forceful for someone of her advanced age.
"Emma Hart..."
Heh, They were addressing her by her full name now.
She was no longer the dutiful granddaughter Emma who brought benefits to her family.
Resigned, Emma brought the phone closer. "Hello?"
Her voice was so feeble, as if bearing the weight of a thousand burdens, yet no one seemed to care about her feelings at that moment.
