Otherworld Advance Team -
Chapter 588 - 581: Weapons Usage Training
Chapter 588: Chapter 581: Weapons Usage Training
Perhaps it was because of Feliz, Carter showed particular enthusiasm towards the members of the Advance Team, arranging for them to stay in a row of ready-made cabins while the others, including himself, had to settle within tents.
Knight of the Temple set up a defensive line and watch posts at the edge of the forest, with a knight carrying sanitizing liquid positioned to disinfect soldiers coming and going. This was likely a strategy learned from the people of Earth.
The second day they arrived at the camp, Luo’er begun training these new recruits. Carter divided the soldiers into two groups, each comprising 250 individuals. They packed the training field, waiting for Luo’er and his team to arrive.
These troops were equipped with light weapons in accordance with foot soldiers’ standards as their main job was to battle Corpse Demons; hence there weren’t many heavy firearms in the army. The only significant firepower was granted to the two extra mortar teams, each with around ten men.
Documented in the arms distribution standards from Headquarters, every ten soldiers were to be part of a rifle squad. Each squad was handed one light machine gun, two 7.62 caliber NATO standard semi-automatic rifles, and several AK-47 automatic rifles.
What troubled Luo’er the most was that this army was almost entirely made up of farmers. In the Otherworld, farmers made poor soldiers. Being illiterate, they couldn’t even recognize basic characters, and were worlds apart from nobles who had received education since childhood.
Earlier in Melia’s camp, conflicts arose between the instructor of the Headquarters and Melia’s subordinates due to issues with illiteracy. An illiterate army struggled to form a strong fighting force. The Church Court’s new military force would just manage Corpse Demons; any head-to-head combat situations would likely result in a faster disintegration than Melia’s army.
However, these problems were not his to worry about, and hence, Luo’er didn’t fret. Prior to training, his sole concentration was on how to teach these new recruits to use weapons properly and avoid injuring their own.
"Good morning, Everyone. I am your instructor Luo’er, and today, I and my team will train you to use Earth’s weapons. I hope you all will cooperate with me." Facing the massive crowd, Luo’er showed no signs of nervousness. Accustomed to big-stage exposure, Luo’er remained calm. Had it been him right after he arrived in the Otherworld, he would have probably been tongue-tied by now.
The soldiers stared wide-eyed at the half-elf standing before them. Despite a good number of contemptuous looks, Luo’er remained unfazed. Seeing their expressionless faces, Luo’er cleared his throat and began the weapon operation training.
"This is an AK automatic rifle which can fire automatically, getting ammo supplied from the magazine. By pulling back the bolt, you can load a bullet and shift to standby mode." Luo’er held up a brand-new AK rifle, introducing it to the crowd.
"AK...."
"Automatic..."
"Magazine... standby..."
The soldiers started whispering among themselves. Luo’er listed a whole bunch of Earth-related terms in one breath. Even Carter, a well-educated noble, struggled to keep up, let alone these illiterate men.
Hearing their whispers, Luo’er sighed and once again started explaining, "Rifle is synonymous to an infantry weapon. Automatic refers to bullets automatically getting loaded. You don’t need to load it manually... Magazine is this thing in the bottom, which holds thirty bullets..."
Before he could finish, Cheng Ziang at the side tugged him lightly and whispering into his ear, "Don’t bother introducing all sorts of terminologies. Simply instruct them how to use it, that’s all. The AK rifle is simple and even a monkey could use it with little training. There’s absolutely no need to explain any complexity to them."
"Hmm, I understand!" Luo’er quickly took the advice on board, nodding in agreement.
"Alright then, let’s skip these steps. Everyone, please look. This is the magazine. Press the latch to remove or insert the magazine. Only with a loaded magazine connected can the rifle fire. After this step, please turn your attention here..."
"With that, Luo’er turned the gun around, pointing the safety switch towards the soldiers: "This is the safety, the topmost position is the ’off’ state, the bottommost is ’semi-auto’, and the middle is ’fully auto’. We push the safety switch to the middle position, and then we pull the charging handle!"
With a clack, the chamber of the AK was quickly rebounded, pushing a bullet from the magazine into the barrel.
"The gun is now in the ready-to-fire state, all I need to do now is pull the trigger and it will shoot all the bullets. Next, I will ask my assistant to demonstrate how to shoot!" Saying this, Luo’er gave Cheng Ziang the AK rifle.
Cheng Ziang took over the rifle, prepared for shooting, aiming at the target in the not too distant area. Luo’er walked next to him and continued to explain the action to everyone: "For standing position shooting, everyone needs to note that the stock must be held against the shoulder. The right foot should be one step back for support, while the left foot should stride forward. The method of aiming is as follow: cheek resting on the stock, the left eye slightly squinting, the right eye looking through the rear sight and aligning with the front sight to aim at the target, forming a straight line."
The crowd burst into a flurry of discussion again, but they were still dissecting the meaning of semi-automatic and automatic, which made Luo’er feel disappointed and physically drained. Indeed, teaching illiterates how to shoot was much more difficult than teaching students.
Heaving a slight sigh, Luo’er addressed the crowd: "Since everyone’s discussing the meaning of semi-auto and auto, let’s demonstrate it so all of you can get a better understanding!"
With that, Luo’er beckoned to Cheng Ziang, then announced to the crowd: "Now we’re in semi-automatic mode, may I ask my assistant to demonstrate for everyone."
Upon listening, Cheng Ziang pushed the safety to the very bottom, aimed briefly, and pulled the trigger. The AK rifle let out a deafening noise. Since there were no muzzle brakes or other muzzle devices installed, everyone could see a huge flash of flame at the muzzle.
Far away behind the target, the dirt on the mound was kicked up high, obviously the bullet had pierced the target and went straight into the mound behind. Cheng Ziang fired five shots, the recoil was so strong that even he barely controlled it, and the distant mound kept kicking up high dust.
The shock a gunshot gives to ordinary people was something Luo’er and his group could never fathom. After a few gunshots, the soldiers began to squirm noticeably, many of them showing a fearful expression, looking in terror at the tiny rifle in Cheng Ziang’s hand.
"That’s semi-automatic mode," Luo’er calmly turned around and explained to the restless crowd, "each pulling of the trigger results in only one bullet firing. If you want to continue shooting, you have to pull the trigger again. The advantage of semi-auto is that it allows you to adjust your shooting posture during breaks, increasing accuracy. Now we will demonstrate automatic mode for everyone, I hope you’re not frightened."
With that, Luo’er beckoned Cheng Ziang again. Cheng Ziang nodded, pushed the safety to the middle position, and aimed at the distant target. This time he took no chances, taking an extra step back with his right foot, grounding it firmly, while at the same time using both hands to control the rifle tightly.
"Ratatatatat!!!"
After being ready, Cheng Ziang pulled the trigger, and the deafening gunshot rang out instantly, the muzzle spewing out intense gunfire. In an instant, the rifle had expelled all the bullets from the magazine, leaving only the clinking shells falling to the ground.
Having completed the shooting, Cheng Ziang tapped his ear, quietly let out a sigh of relief. It was a close call, but luckily it was executed perfectly.
The weapons used by the Advance Team were all specially customized from the Northern Factory, not only do they function well, but the recoil is also minimized as much as possible. Meanwhile, the AKM rifle Cheng Ziang was using was a straight out of the box, original model. Apart from the slant break that suppresses muzzle rise, there weren’t any additional pieces, hence the recoil was rather hefty. The Advance Team, used to high-quality guns, were having a hard time adapting.
The unrest among the soldiers this time was clearly more intense than before, the fearful people were significantly more. If it weren’t for Carter’s presence, Luo’er suspected these guys might have scattered long ago.
People’s fear often stems from the unknown, so for these illiterate soldiers, the weapon in Cheng Ziang’s hands was an unknown. It could make a loud noise, it could hit targets several tens of meters away, hence it undoubtedly became the object of fear for the soldiers.
