Otherworld Advance Team -
Chapter 507 - 500: Airdrop into Enemy Territory
Chapter 507: Chapter 500: Airdrop into Enemy Territory
The southern shore of Ilanadale to the Ancient States is mostly flat terrain, with rolling hills no higher than a hundred meters. Such terrain is very convenient for cavalry mobility, but the Advance Team didn’t have enough horses. This would put them at a disadvantage if they encountered Theron.
Currently, the High-peak people’s aerospace technology is relatively backward, so they don’t have very advanced navigation equipment. They can only adjust their route by relying on the compass and maps of the Otherworld. Because of this, the transport plane did not dare to fly over the sea completely. Instead, it moved along the coastline to avoid getting lost.
This was probably the first time Luoya came into contact with such advanced technology. She seemed unsettled and appeared to be suffering from motion sickness. Moreover, the loud noise from the propeller made her extremely irritated. She sat closely next to Cheng Ziang, holding onto his clothes with a frown, trying to regulate her agitated breathing.
The transport plane had been flying along the coastline for over two hours. Finally, the High-peak communications officer in the front sent for action. He took out a glow stick from a box and waved it towards the neighboring plane. It seemed to be some sort of signal, and the neighboring plane quickly responded in kind.
"We are about to reach our destination, please prepare for landing!" After receiving a response from the neighboring aircraft, the communications officer turned around and informed them in standard Tasta language.
As the two transport planes were about to approach the destination, the pilots gradually slowed the rotation speed of the propellers. When they were less than five kilometers from the destination, the pilots turned off the propellers entirely. They adjusted the output of the gravity engines by inertia, allowing the transport plane to begin a steady descent.
This is a common landing method for anti-gravity aircraft. As they don’t need speed to maintain lift, they often use inertia for glide landing. The advantage of this type of landing is its concealment. With the propeller turned off and the gravity engine virtually silent, the transport plane can quietly land at the designated location.
But when the transport plane needs to take off again, it has to start the propeller device, effectively exposing its landing position. The High-peak people have a solution to this. After dropping off personnel, they elevate the transport plane to a few hundred meters before turning on the propeller. This ensures, to the greatest extent, that their landing position remains concealed.
With the start of the propellers, it finally quieted down. All they could hear was the wind outside the cabin and the soft humming of the gravity engine. As the propellers’ roar subsided, the two transport planes truly became ghosts in the night sky, gently gliding down to their designated landing spot.
While it was close to the sea, it was still a distance away from Nailin Town, and hardly anyone was visible at night. That’s why this location was chosen for the first airborne drop.
Once the reconnaissance team is dispatched, they can guide the subsequent forces to their destination, eliminating the need for the transport plane to risk dropping people at unknown locations.
Under the adept control of the High-peak pilots, the two transport planes adjusted their postures slowly and gradually came to a stop on the beach. Unlike airboats, the structure of the transport plane was strong enough to support the closure of the gravity engine without collapsing under its own weight.
As soon as the transport plane settled, Luo’er led the way by pushing open the cabin door and was the first to jump down, gesturing to everyone to disembark. Perhaps it was because it was her first time on a plane, but Luoya looked terrible. She barely stepped out of the plane when her legs gave way, and she almost fell. Luckily, Luo’er caught her just in time.
"Are you okay?" Luo’er looked at her with concern.
Luoya looked at him with resentment and then abruptly pushed him away. Stumbling a few steps forward, she suddenly kneeled and started throwing up. Watching her disheveled appearance, Luo’er could only shake his head and sigh.
Of course, everyone else wasn’t faring any better. While the three Advance Team members were alright, several members from the hired squad couldn’t hold back their nausea as soon as they disembarked.
Luoya felt like she had vomited all her bile out. Once she gained her strength back, she covered her nose in disgust and struggled up from the ground.
"Here, wipe your face," Luo’er kindly offered her a tissue.
Luoya frowned at him and angrily pushed his hand away. With a cry-for-help look in her eyes, she searched around and eventually focused on Cheng Ziang. Seeing this, Cheng Ziang shrugged helplessly, walked over, took the tissue from Luo’er, and handed it to Luoya.
This young lady was clearly still upset with Luo’er, refusing what he gave her, but readily accepting what Cheng Ziang offered. Faced with this situation, Luo’er felt rather helpless, but was increasingly suspicious of Cheng Ziang’s motives.
"Captain Luo’er, what should we do next?" The leader of the first mercenary squad approached him and asked respectfully.
"We will first walk to Nailin Town to rest. You mainly gather intelligence in the city and cooperate with our reconnaissance work outside," Luo’er ordered.
"Understood, let’s set off immediately!" The mercenary leader nodded and responded.
Having safely transported the two squads to their destination, the transport planes began their silent ascent. Rising to a height of just over three hundred meters, they activated their propellers. The two transport planes made a roaring sound, then returned along the route they came from.
It was now evening, and everything around them was calm except for the constant sound of waves crashing against the beach. The air was filled with the salty sea breeze. They certainly couldn’t enter Nailin Town right away, as they had heard that due to the Creating God Plan, the town was under curfew. It would be like walking into their graves to enter the town with people at this time.
However, they were prepared and had brought sleeping bags with them. The Ancient States were relatively safe with fewer road bandits and robbers, so camping outdoors only required them to worry about beasts.
After everyone had rested for a brief moment, Luo’er led the team in the direction of the inland. The coastal wind was strong and not suitable for camping, so they needed to find a forest to avoid the wild wind on the plains.
Luoya was still feeling dizzy after a bout of vomiting, and unable to resist, she had to let Cheng Ziang carry her on the road. Luoya was so disoriented she didn’t even have the energy to refuse his arrangement.
The group began to move from the seaside towards the inland. There were still quite a few forests in this area. The industrial development of the Ancient States was just beginning, and most of the environment still retained its original appearance. However, with the progress of industrialization, this world would inevitably follow the path of the Earth and begin to transform nature to suit production.
Just as they were about to leave the coast, Luo’er looked back and noticed some ships still passing by. Far off on the shore, there was a lighthouse guiding the ships into the port.
It was long known that the Ancient States had advanced maritime trade, and now it indeed seemed so. The islands within the territory of the Ancient States are mostly located in shallow water areas. The average water depth was around thirty meters, which was unsuitable for the terrifying leviathan to dwell in. These monstrous creatures often needed one or two hundred meters deep waters to barely survive.
Because of this, the area became one of the few sea zones that hadn’t been attacked by leviathans. The islands needed to be connected by ships, thus developing a relatively advanced maritime industry.
It was rumored that the people of the Ancient States were building a large steam-powered ironclad ship, planning to incorporate it into their naval fleet to drive away and hunt leviathans in the surrounding deep seas, inaugurating the Great Age of Seafaring for the people of the Otherworld.
Before this Luo’er and the others had seen a leviathan, but according to the sailors, the one they saw was just a young adult leviathan, still able to grow. A fully grown, elder leviathan, they said, was a few hundred meters long. Luo’er felt that unless Earth’s advanced ten-thousand-ton destroyers could enter the Otherworld, they could only passively take hits from a leviathan.
The mercenary squad moved ahead in a defensive formation, with the advance team following closely behind. Although there was no moonlight, the starlit sky was barely enough to light up the path ahead. Because they were traveling at night, all their weapons were loaded, fingers resting on the trigger guards, ready to fire at any time.
The Ancient States also allowed private ownership of weapons, and they were even more open and bold than the Northern territories in this regard. Even within the city, there was no need to conceal weapons.
But committing a crime here would result in a much more severe punishment compared to the north. Besides dealing with the religious forces of the North and heretics, the Theron of the Ancient States also maintained order, functioning almost like a police department.
These people were much stronger and more responsible than the rogues in the North, so it would hardly be possible to cause trouble here and leave unscathed. Hence, even though the entire squad was armed, they were still very wary of the Theron.
