Otherworld Advance Team -
Chapter 376 - 369: East City District
Chapter 376: Chapter 369: East City District
The next day, the group prepared to set out. Luo’er and the others donned battered adventure clothes over their bulletproof vests, and they wrapped up the rifles on their backs.
Cheng Ziang and Yalunte changed into soldier clothes, or rather, to be more precise, they dressed as patrol guards. These people would patrol the streets with guns to maintain city safety. However, the quality of the patrol guards varies greatly depending on the area.
The Uptown District boasts the highest quality patrol, as this is where the royal palace and the nobles reside. Following that is the native area of the Western District, and the worst is the Eastern District where many foreigners live. The patrolmen here are no different from gangsters.
However, for Luo’er and the others, the chaotic law and order situation in the Eastern District allowed Cheng Ziang and Yalunte to hide perfectly without being discovered by other patrols.
But having Cheng Ziang and the others impersonate patrolmen was only to facilitate their mission. Normally, they still had to wear cloaks to avoid revealing their identities. They could only disclose their identities to assist the two groups when they encountered troubles.
In the Eastern District, the mobs and hooligans are most afraid of patrol guards. They are, to put simply, full of experience, trained by the chaotic Eastern District to become seasoned professionals. They are worse than local gangs when they take action, thus they are considered the largest gang in the Eastern District.
"I never realized how ugly the uniform of the patrol guard is!" Yalunte looked around and then said with a frown.
The uniform of the patrol guard is mainly black cotton, matched with a little white, which makes their clothes very conspicuous in the crowd. With the advent of the firearm era, they gradually abandoned their armors. Even now, only a few patrol guards are still equipped with chainmail, but considering that street riots are mainly gunfights, such defense can only be considered psychologically comforting.
"Was your previous gear good looking?" Cheng Ziang, who was changing his shoes next to him, asked.
"Of course, and the armor was thick, even a machine gun couldn’t penetrate it." Yalunte is still proud of that war.
"A good man doesn’t boast about his past glory!" Cheng Ziang said, hanging his long knife and scabbard around his waist.
"What does that mean?" Yalunte asked puzzledly.
"It means nothing," Cheng Ziang checked the safety of his carbine, then hung it on his shoulder. He suddenly thought of something, and turned his head to look at him and asked, "By the way, do you know how to use a gun?"
"You underestimate me!" Yalunte said, checking the safety in emulation of him, but with a guilty conscience. Although he had been in touch with the headquarters for a long time, he had never systematically learned to use firearms. He used a handgun the most and was most familiar with it.
Looking at his clumsy appearance, Cheng Ziang sighed, then took the rifle from his hand, checked it to make sure that the barrel was empty, and that the safety was on, before putting it safely in his hand.
In terms of firearm usage, although Cheng Ziang can’t say he is particularly skilled, he is at least familiar, which is something Yalunte still needs to learn from him.
As patrol guards, they don’t need to wrap up their weapons, they just need to hide the firearms under the coat. This is the usual practice of the patrol guards. They wrap themselves up tightly, and then go to that chaotic area waiting for someone to make trouble, and then they can catch the person and extort a ransom.
But their black wide-brimmed hats often betray them. These leather hats have very wide brims and are the standard outfit of the patrolmen. Generally, when people see this kind of hat, they will instinctively detour.
Since they were in Holy Heart City, Yalunte also disguised himself. This was to avoid being recognized by those who were familiar with him. Yet, he didn’t really mind, as it had been more than twenty years, and those who knew him were either dead or blurring because of old age. They might not remember him.
Looking at the two men standing like two iron towers in place, emitting a solemn and killing aura from head to toe, Luo’er couldn’t help nodding, and then praised them saying "Not bad, at least the personality is complete."
"We might as well just go and become patrol guards." Cheng Ziang half-jokingly said.
"Your task is to patrol the streets and assist other groups in completing tasks when necessary. Your cover is too obvious, so don’t interact too much with other groups unless it’s a special time." After a pause, Luo’er said with a serious face.
"Got it!" Cheng Ziang nodded.
"Try to blend into the Eastern District as much as possible and don’t go to the Western District or Uptown. The security there is stricter, and you might get your identity exposed." Luo’er reminded them.
"Understood." Cheng Ziang nodded.
"Also..."
Just as Luo’er was about to speak, he was interrupted by Cheng Ziang," Why do you always like to nag so much?"
"I’m just worrying about you." Luo’er said helplessly.
"We know what to do, don’t nag like a mother, after all, I’m the vice captain..." Cheng Ziang shook his head in annoyance.
"Okay then, just be careful on your own." Luo’er nodded, not continuing to nag.
"Speaking of you, being half-elf, you wouldn’t want more verbal abuse, would you?" Cheng Ziang stated as he looked at him.
"Don’t worry, I’ll cover my elven features. When you’re carrying out the mission, take good care of Murong’s group; it’s their first time here and they might be unfamiliar with the place," Luo’er assured, waving his hand.
"I know!" Cheng Ziang nodded in understanding.
Once prepared, the group, arranged by Shariya, rode on carriages, and with the worried gazes of three girls watching, they left the academy.
They crossed through the Uptown District and left the bridge, finally arriving at the Eastern District, renowned for its chaos. Luo’er vaguely remembered their feelings when they first arrived there. Returning a year later, he felt somewhat nostalgic.
However, as soon as Hu Daoke stepped off the carriage, he trod in cow dung. His previous sentimental feelings swiftly evaporated, replaced by furious cursing.
"What rotten luck, this damned place is still the same dump, hasn’t changed a bit." Hu Daoke complained, stomping his foot, trying to shake off the dung from his shoes.
Honestly speaking, the Eastern District reflected more of the feudal nature of the Otherworld, in contrast to the Uptown District which had started to adopt architectural styles from Earth. For the nobles, this might be a trend to follow, but for Luo’er and others from Earth, the Eastern District was more appealing.
The Eastern District was a melting pot for all races from the northern part of the continent; the Human Race, Elves, Dwarves as well as Beastman, and their mixed-blood descendants. Among these races, the half-elf was the lowest. Among half-elves, the wood elves were considered the bottom rung, persuading Luo’er, a mixed-blood wood elf, to take extra precautions to avoid revealing his identity.
Night Elves were quite tolerant, so their descendants weren’t heavily discriminated against. Snow Elves were the most conservative, but due to their habitat in the far north of the Winter Mountains, very few slave traders could capture them, and they rarely bred mixed offspring. In contrast, wood elves were easier to catch and conservative, making their offspring mostly slaves, leading them to be the most oppressed.
The Eastern District was complicated, home to various races. The Advance Team was mainly mixed-blood, and while they might be conspicuous elsewhere, they blended quite well with the crowd here.
"You two follow behind Murong’s team. If they encounter any trouble, you handle it. We will head east, follow this street to the end and check if there are any taverns or similar places." After disembarking, Luo’er instructed Cheng Ziang and Yalunte.
"Understood, watch your backs!" Cheng Ziang nodded, and along with Yalunte, they followed Murong’s team from a distance. They radiated an aura of solemnity and danger that kept people at a distance. The faint-hearted fled when they saw them, as if encountering the god of death.
"Let’s go!" After giving instructions, Luo’er motioned to the two to follow him to the end of the street.
"Old Xu, is this your first time coming to such a place?" Hu Daoke casually put one hand around Xuzhong Qi’s shoulder, asking him enthusiastically.
"Hmm? Oh, oh yes!" Xuzhong Qi gave quick nods in response.
"Let’s go, I’ll take you to a tavern full of girls to broaden your horizons." Hu Daoke enthusiastically proposed.
Luo’er tapped him lightly on the shoulder from behind, then frowned and said, "Stop messing around!"
"I’m just teasing him!" Hu Daoke turned, with a look of unjust accusation.
"You can flirt all you want in the tavern, try to gather some useful intelligence, but stop teasing Xuzhong Qi, he’s a sensitive lad. He can’t take your teasing," Luo’er advised.
"It seems like I’m the most handsome and sociable fella of our group!" Hu Daoke half-jokingly bragged.
"Enough, quit messing around!" His words made Luo’er chuckle.
"Speaking of which, wasn’t it here that you met that girl, Kali?" Hu Daoke suddenly remembered something, thereby asking Luo’er.
"Hmm, why do you ask?" Luo’er nodded in response.
"You could’ve tried to find that girl or some other girl to assist you if things didn’t work out," Hu Daoke suggested.
"What kind of man do you take me for," Luo’er responded with a wry smile, "it just happened to be a coincidence last time."
"Boss, through Kali, you found someone, didn’t you?" suspecting something, Hu Daoke asked Luo’er.
"I think it was a middleman from an assassin organization, but I can’t remember what his alias was," Luo’er scratched his head, then looked at Hu Daoke and asked, "What’s with this sudden interest?"
"I was thinking," Hu Daoke looked around and said with a frown, "instead of us struggling to find clues, we could just have someone else find them for us."
"If you’ve got something on your mind, spit it out!" Luo’er could tell there was hidden meaning in his words, and asked him directly.
