Otherworld Advance Team -
Chapter 1046 - 1039: The Form of the Overturning Beast
Chapter 1046: Chapter 1039: The Form of the Overturning Beast
After settling the matters here, Luo’er began to organize his equipment. Although this was merely akin to an inspection, there were certain dangers involved, and thus necessary weapons still had to be brought along.
Currently, Feng was confined to bed, and he had left both Tangmo, the mage, and Hu Daoke, the support hand, in the village. In fact, the team’s combat capability had already been significantly reduced, so the remaining members had to be fully armed.
The next morning, Luo’er got up early to gather the team, he, along with Cheng Ziang and Baiyue, the three Advance Team members, plus Axia and Taran, made exactly five people to set off.
However, strictly speaking, there should have been six people because there was also Fulajie’er, a spirit entity, which gave Luo’er the confidence to split the forces.
"Did you summon that guy?" As everyone was checking their weapons and equipment, Luo’er walked to a secluded corner and asked into the void.
"Oh, he is so stubborn! He was clearly scared half to death, yet he stubbornly refused to say anything. He is really making me angry," Fulajie’er’s huffy voice came into Luo’er’s mind.
"Sigh, it looks like it’ll be awhile before we can help Feng..." Luo’er nodded and said with a sigh.
"If her abilities can’t be restored, do we really have to send her back?" Fulajie’er asked uneasily.
"What do you mean ’send back,’" Luo’er shook his head and then said, "The Advance Team is on a mission, not playing house. There will always be dangers. Feng, without her combat abilities, would be in danger following us, so it’s better for her to go back first."
"That’s true, but it still feels uncomfortable... it’s like, once the prey is gone, killing the hunting dog," Fulajie’er muttered.
"It’s more like ’the hare is cooked; the dog is stewed,’ you guys..." Luo’er didn’t know what to say, only able to exhale a sigh.
After checking the weapons and equipment, everyone left the village fence and headed in the direction Taran had indicated. Without horses as a means of transportation, they could only walk, but fortunately, the distance was not too far, and they would probably arrive by noon.
The group first followed the main road and after about a kilometer, they began to head deep into the mountains. The deep mountains of the Otherworld were true to their name; due to limited technological development, most countries in the Otherworld had low levels of natural environment exploitation.
Although the population of the Otherworld had exploded in recent years, most people were concentrated in the grain-producing plains, and few were willing to live deep in the mountains voluntarily.
Blazing a trail through thickets and underbrush, they managed to carve out a path that had previously not existed. In such a desolate environment, without Taran guiding them, they would likely have gotten lost already, let alone find the remains of the Scouring Sky Beast.
It was now summer in Oudallo, not as harshly cold as the Snow Domain. Although the dense forest provided some shade, they still felt unbearably hot as they walked.
Axia, who had lived in the Snow Domain all year round and was accustomed to the severe cold of the far north, reacted strongly to this environment; her originally pale and tender cheeks were now slightly flushed, and perspiration trickled down her face.
"Aunt Axia, are you okay? Do you need to rest for a bit?" Noticing Axia’s condition, Luo’er asked with concern.
"I’m fine, I’m fine," Axia said somewhat awkwardly, waving her hand and gently exhaling the heat, attempting to rid her body of the stifling warmth, but while inhaling, she inadvertently drew the dry, hot air back in.
"It seems that Snow Elves have a hard time adapting to this environment, huh?" Luo’er remarked, looking toward Cheng Ziang.
"Why are you looking at me? I was born and raised in Haiya Academy; I’m used to the heat of the south. This is nothing to me," Cheng Ziang shrugged and said.
"No, it’s just a temporary discomfort, I’ll feel better soon," Axia breathed lightly, slightly out of breath as she spoke.
"Still, let’s slow down our pace a bit; that way, it’ll be easier for everyone," Luo’er ordered, feeling a bit distressed.
"It’s good we set out in the morning, if we had left at noon, we’d probably have died from the heat in the forest by now," Cheng Ziang shook his head and remarked.
Hearing Luo’er’s command, Baiyue turned her head to look at Taran, who was leading the way in front, and then asked, "Taran, how much further is it?"
"Oh, just up ahead, we’re about to get there, sister, do you need a rest?" Taran turned back and asked.
"Alright, let’s slow down a bit since we’re almost there," Baiyue said to him after glancing back at Luo’er.
"Oh, okay, then let’s take it slow!" Taran nodded and then slowed their pace.
"Sorry for holding you all up," Axia said, visibly moved by everyone taking care of her, with guilt written all over her face.
"Don’t say that, Aunt Axia," Luo’er said with a smile, "in a way, it was us who took you out of the Snow Domain, so we have to be responsible for you, don’t we."
"Then make sure you take responsibility all the way!" Axia said with a smile.
"Eh..." Luo’er was caught off guard by Axia’s response and stood there, unsure of how to reply.
Seeing this, Cheng Ziang shook his head and lamented, "It’s lucky that Moumou isn’t here, or else she’d be jealous again."
After slowing their pace, Axia’s symptoms noticeably eased. Taran intentionally chose paths that were densely shaded by trees, so it didn’t take long for Axia to feel much less overheated.
"Aunt Axia, having lived for so long, have you ever seen or heard of the sky giant beast?" Luo’er asked.
"Hmm, I haven’t seen it, but I have heard of it," Axia thought for a moment, then replied, "There truly are such legends on the Continent, about a giant sky beast that one day descended upon this land, but then quickly flew away and disappeared. Later, some people still saw it, but then there was no news of it ever again."
"How long ago was that?" Luo’er asked.
"It was several hundred years ago," Axia thought and said, "The first ones to see it were the Blaiqi people who navigated the eastern coast; they thought it was Leviathan ascending to the heavens, so they were terrified. Back then, it was popular to say that after Leviathan lived for a thousand years, it could rise into the air and become the master of the skies."
"The northern darkness houses a fish, its name is Kun, the Kun surges through the clouds and becomes the Peng..." Cheng Ziang suddenly recalled this allusion and muttered to himself.
"If in this world, the sea holds Leviathan, and the sky holds the Scouring Sky beast, then why is it that mostly people from the Western Continent cannot see them, while the people of the Eastern Continent are enough to make vessels out of them, like Kunzhou?" Luo’er raised a perplexing question.
"Who knows, maybe it’s due to environmental factors," Cheng Ziang shrugged and said.
"That doesn’t make sense. If the Scouring Sky beasts can roam the skies, then logically, they should be free to travel through all the skies, so why do they concentrate in the East Continent and not the Western Continent?" Luo’er asked.
"Also, since they roam through the skies, what do they eat to get that big?" Luo’er continued to ask.
"Maybe they eat magic, atmospheric magic," Baiyue joined the discussion and said.
"This, magic can be eaten, and magic can fill you up?" Cheng Ziang spread his hands, indicating his inability to comprehend.
"You ask such questions, just like asking why computers use electricity to start up, why they cannot burn gasoline like cars, why they cannot eat like animals. Every form of life has its unique way of surviving; just because you don’t know, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist," Baiyue explained.
"I’m just curious, if Scouring Sky beasts survive on magic, then what kind of life forms are they? Carbon-based, silicon-based, or plasma?" Cheng Ziang asked.
"Maybe it’s like Fulajie’er, absorbing magic to bind the soul..." Luo’er hesitated, then quickly overturned his own view, "That doesn’t seem right. If that were the case, then the Scouring Sky beasts shouldn’t have a physical form, should they? How could the Sub-beastmen rely on it to travel thousands of miles from the East Continent to the Western Continent?"
