Chapter 66: Chapter 66 The Man Almost Beaten To Death
Jerry Sutton ended the call with a note of finality, not giving her a chance to say anything.
Kelsie tossed the phone to her side almost immediately and got off the bed.
She freshened up and strutted to the dinning to have breakfast with her children.
As for Jerry’s order? She couldn’t care less about it.
Laura made a promise she ended up keeping. What was so bad about it?
She tossed the thought to the back of her mind when they finished eating.
That morning, she decided to stay in her children’s room before deciding to check her emails.
Almost lost in the hundreds of new emails, her eyes caught the familiar name of the elementary school she had emailed before leaving for the hackathon last night.
She squinted her eyes and opened the email.
It was a big school, so how was it they responded to her email so quickly? It was also the weekend.
Highly suspicious, she compared the email address on it with the one on the school’s official website.
After confirming it was really the school who emailed back, she left the room to get ready to leave.
Ten minutes later, she kissed the triplets goodbye and left.
The interview was to hold in the top floor of school which was located in the middle of Silicon Valley.
So she ordered an uber to drive her.
Twenty minutes later, the driver abruptly stopped in front of a street with open gate.
"Ma’am, the street restricts commercial vehicles from going any further. I’m afraid you’ll have to walk inside by foot." The driver spoke up, glancing at her through the rear view mirror.
She nodded in understanding and alighted, paid and was just about to walk in when she caught sight of a group of thugs dragging a familiar young man in suit into a corner.
"What? You’re alone today?"
"I swear you always walk with a bodyguard. What happened to him? I know your Howard family hasn’t gone broke, so they can still afford his services. So why isn’t he with you?"
"Mr. Howard, whatever the reason is, you shouldn’t walk around without your bodyguard. You’ve offended quite a lot of people to still think you belong to yourself."
It was a quiet place.
Maybe because it was the weekend and there were no residential buildings except schools and a few factories.
So despite standing so far away from them, Kelsie could hear them slapping him and their mocking words.
And even if she had recognized the man to be the said dangerous hacker from last night, she didn’t plan to involve herself.
Hence, she lowered her eyes to her phone and turned on the electronic map in it to know which direction to take.
"Do you know how many people want your life? If I post on my social that I have you in my custody and open bids, I’ll be taking in millions if not hundreds of millions in a few minutes." fr\eewebno vel .c(o)m
"You’re wanted, but legally wanted. You should be proud of yourself for being worth so much."
"I know we have to make money with him, but this crazy bastard ruined my life. I say we beat him a little before opening bids on his head."
"A very nice idea. We get to vent our anger and become millionaires at once. I approve!"
The slapping continued. But this time, it was accompanied with punches and kicks.
After a few seconds, a voice devoid of fear spoke up.
"Beat me as much as you want, but don’t open a bid on me. How much do you want? I’ll give it to you!"
Following his words was a sharp and angry laugh.
"What? You’ll pay me as much as I want? Darn you, stupid bastard! You enriched your pockets by stealing people’s money in broad daylight. How dare you be so cocky with me!"
"How much did I take from you? I’ll triple it! No, I’ll multiply it ten times as long as you promise not to hand me over to anyone else!"
"Cocky bastard! You’re one to talk about giving out people’s money because you didn’t work for it."
"In fact, I change my mind. Let’s not just beat him a bit, let’s stomp him to death!"
"These hackers think they can turn people’s lives upside down and get away with it! We can just stomp you to death and take your money!"
"I’ll bash his head in first. Hand me that pipe."
Just as the person ran to pick up the pipe, a leg in flared Jean kicked it away.
He immediately took a step backward and raised his eyes to look at the person, his eyes hardened when he saw it was a young woman wearing a high waisted flared blue jeans and a plain white blouse.
"Oh, that was there." Although it sounded like she was apologizing for kicking it away by mistake, the knowing look in her eyes told him otherwise.
He clenched his jaw tightly and glared hard at her.
"Woman, if you don’t like what’s going on here, walk away!"
Then he bent again to pick up the pipe, but she kicked it farther when he almost touched it.
"Oh, I did it again. It must be my way of telling you not to touch it." Once again, she didn’t sound apologetic at all.
The man, who was already short-tempered, was seconds away from throwing punches when one of his friends placed a hand on his shoulder.
"I’m only giving you the chance to leave because you’re so beautiful. Clearly, you seem to be on your way to somewhere."
"Don’t let us delay you any longer and just be on your way. Otherwise, my friend here won’t take it easy with you."
Kelsie blatantly ignored him and took out her phone. Then raised her eyes to meet Serbian Howard’s.
"You said you’d give them money if they don’t hand you over to someone else. So how much will you give me if I call the police?"
The man stared back at her blandly, his brown eyes empty and soulless.
As soon as these men grabbed him, he made peace with the thought he was going to die here. His already fruitless and bland life was coming to an end.
While he didn’t have a problem letting them beat him to death, he didn’t want to give them the satisfaction of beating him to death as he begged.
He wanted to be remembered for standing his ground and insisting on paying them off.
But all of a sudden, there was a woman asking how much he’d give her if she called the police on them?
Even if she called the cops, the nearest station was at least ten minutes from here. If they hurried, it’d take them at least five to get here.
That was enough time for these men to beat them both to death.
What a foolish woman.
She should’ve run when they gave her the chance.
The least he could do before they died was to answer her question. Given it was the last conversation she would ever have, he was willing to sacrifice his breath.
He sighed in resignation and looked her dead in the eyes as he solemnly swore, "Not only will I owe you money, I will also owe you the rest of my life if you somehow manage to save it."
