Chapter 223: Chapter 223 Someone Unexpected In Her Living Room
"Did you go on a trip with Mommy without Jesse and me?"
"Uh, no. I went with this uncle to get ice cream, but I don’t really remember what happened."
"An uncle came to see you? An uncle came to see us too. He said you both had a lot of fun together."
United again, Keira and Zade jumped around the house, hugging and kissing each other on the cheek.
As if allergic to their overly affectionate reunion, Jesse followed after them, smiling with his eyes and occasionally patting Keira on the cheek, as if to confirm she was real.
Jett, Kelsie, Daniel, and Eric watched them quietly from the living room.
After a while, Eric lowered his eyes to the surveillance footage playing on the screen, showing a footage of a man casually leaving the apartment building through the gate.
"He was smart enough not to drive in with a car and walked out. He avoided looking toward all the cameras. Didn’t look up the entire time he came or left."
Jett’s eyes dimmed.
With human surveillance already covering the area, thieves and pickpockets didn’t dare linger outside the gate, so he hadn’t seen any reason to install more cameras outside the apartment building.
But as he watched the man leave, he realized his mistake.
Daniel was the only one dumbfounded.
Like the fool he was, he blindly opened the door to a man who wouldn’t even show his face as soon as he heard the man was related to Kelsie.
He was in such a hurry to get her to be with his brother that he accepted a wannabe who could’ve harmed both him and the children, without verifying his identity first.
"I’ve made up my mind," Kelsie suddenly said, leaning forward.
Daniel hurriedly shook his head in refusal, dreading what he thought she was going to say next.
"It’s all my fault. You shouldn’t distance yourself from my brother just because of my mistake."
"Yes, he’s right. If you’re going to distance yourself from anyone, that person should be Daniel," Eric nodded in agreement.
Though this was a serious situation, Daniel couldn’t help feeling offended by how quickly Eric threw him under the bus.
Eric noticed he was brooding and scoffed. "Bold of you to brood. Your grandfather would’ve personally thrown you out once he finds out."
Daniel shuddered and leered at him, "Don’t scare me like that. Grandfather doesn’t know about the triplets, and if you talk like that, you might actually give Jett and Kelsie an idea."
"What? Isn’t that what you wanted? Are you now two-faced?"
"You talk to me however you like, don’t you?"
"Shut up and answer the question."
Daniel gritted his teeth, admitting through clenched jaw, "Well, I know when to take responsibility for my actions. Knowing my brother, he might string me up for making such a mistake, but sister-in-law is soft at heart—although she can be a bit handy with her fist."
"I figured once she sees how remorseful I am, she’ll naturally forgive me. After all, I’ve been taking care of the children for almost three days now."
His words had just fallen when Eric ridiculed, "You’re twenty-five, and I still take care of you. You don’t see me complaining that I’ve done enough."
"You little... when have you ever taken care of me?"
"There’s this one time in middle school when you threw paint on a boy’s face for being..."
Their bickering successfully calmed Kelsie down.
However, the man beside her sighed inwardly and leered at them.
These scrawny bastards just didn’t know when to shut up.
She was about to say something important, and they let their bickering get in the way. What if she was about to propose to him and they stupidly got in the way?
He grimaced at the thought, raising his eyes to chide them, "Hey, you two, shut up or I’ll hang you out to dry!"
Instantly, their wide mouths sealed shut.
Kelsie chuckled and got up to use the restroom, stopping on the way to peek into the children’s room.
She used the guest bathroom across from them so she could hear their laughter.
After washing her hands in the sink, she dried them and turned to the door when the phone in her back pocket vibrated.
She took it out and stared at the unknown number for a while before gently closing the door again to answer it.
"I don’t know who you are, and I don’t want to. But if you came to the apartment building to check it out and see if you like it, then do tell, so I can negotiate a price and move out." She laid out at once, already having a hunch at who the caller was.
A low, chilling laugh laced with mockery filled her ear almost immediately.
"Just as eloquent as I remember. You’ve really grown so big and thoughtful, Kelsie. You connect the dots so quickly and are unrelenting when it comes to your child."
"But children—I’ve always considered them a burden. They make you negligent. I mean, look how you threw your life away the other day just because I used your daughter’s life as the prize."
"Don’t you see it? With those little rascals gone, your clipped wings will become free, and you’ll fly high into the sky."
Staring at herself through the mirror, she bit down on her lower lip and chuckled bitterly, "Hey, I hope you continue being this smug when I finally find you."
At this, he hissed.
"You claim you love your children so much, but you can’t even protect your daughter from me? I’m doing you a favor. Instead of being so angry that I tried to liberate you, you should be thanking me!"
Her grip on the phone tightened. After a while, she took it from her ear and ended the call.
"Jett, I was thinking, how about we tell your-arghhh!" She began to say as she walked out of the bathroom and toward the living room, but shrieked when she reached the living room and saw three men standing nervously.
The familiar head of an elderly man turned to her.
The triplets obediently sat in front of him as he gently stroked their hair.
This head... she could recognize it anywhere. After all, she had been his doctor for some time.
