Chapter 221: Chapter 221 Dr Sutton’s Daughter Is Sleeping In Her Office...
"Hah! I’m a detective. You harm a detective in the line of duty, and you answer for it. It doesn’t matter how wealthy you are, you will pay the price!" Jacqueline snickered.
Jett watched her expression intently.
Clinging to life and trying to manipulate her way out of the mess she was in without being desperate... she was indeed a seasoned detective.
Jett’s lips curled into a wicked smile, "I fear you’ve got this all wrong, Detective. You see, you and your partner were missing until a day ago."
"Now, he has said nothing about what happened. It’s obvious he doesn’t want to get into trouble since he knows there are powerful people behind you. So he’s willing to keep quiet, even though it almost cost him his life."
Jacqueline raised her chin proudly.
"Do you not see it, then? Even he knows better than to act out. If you harm me, not only will you have the police at your back, you’ll also become a target of this powerful person you don’t even know."
"Think twice. Your Adler family may be a big fish here in Silicon Valley, but the world is so much more than Silicon Valley."
"Two days ago, it was your daughter. Tomorrow, it may be one of your sons or even both of them."
"I’m sure by now you understand the person I work for is no ordinary person. We can easily make what happened to your daughter seem like your fault."
Jett listened without interruption, his eyes narrowing as a thought occurred to him.
"This person you work for, did they order you to shoot Kelsie? You see, I’ve been thinking about it."
"You could’ve just taken her to your boss, but you didn’t. She was in cuffs and drugged, so she couldn’t have fought back."
A flicker of emotion flashed past Jacqueline’s eyes before she huffed, "Oh, she’s still alive? I aimed for her kidneys, though. And wasn’t it only recently that you and Kelsie got on good terms?"
"Imagine what she’d do once she finds out you’re responsible for her daughter’s disappearance."
She was smiling smugly until she saw the man smiling as well, and froze.
"Have you gone mad? Why would you smile in a situation like this?"
He strolled over to her and bent down to her level, peering into her battered face, "Because you’ve confirmed two things for me. One, Keira is still alive. Two, your target is Kelsie."
"From what I’ve gathered, you’d say and do whatever you can to break us apart. So the goal is to keep us apart. Why?"
She sneered. "That piece of information is useless even if I tell you. What the master is planning, you’ll never be able to fathom."
Jett mummed and glanced behind him, "Eric, string her up."
The words had barely rolled off his tongue when Eric pulled the lever controlling the chain.
Realizing he was really keeping to his word, a trace of panic flashed past her eyes and she yelled out fearfully, "Wait... I can tell you more about the master. About his plans. All I ask in exchange is that you keep me hidden and protect me from him!"
Jett chuckled, "No. I don’t feel comfortable with the thought of the person who shot Kelsie still being alive."
"You’re a snitch, too. You yap about your undying loyalty and how you’d rather die than betray the one you serve, so I’m giving you an opportunity to do that. Don’t keep her waiting, Eric."
"No, pleas—arghhh!" The woman was on the verge of pleading for her life when Eric released his hold on the lever.
Her throaty scream as she was plunged into the boiling water was so deafening that Eric dipped his hand into his pocket for earplugs.
Jett reduced the heat, letting her simmer for a bit before signaling for Eric to bring her down.
She was bound in chains and couldn’t move freely the entire time. The iron, a perfect conductor of heat, made it even worse. Even after being pulled out, she still felt like she was burning.
Her razor-sharp tongue had melted away, just like the layers of her skin.
Eric squinted at her and feigned concern. "You don’t look very good, Detective. Was the water too hot? Sir, I think the heat was higher than we planned."
"You’re right. I shouldn’t have set it so high. Do you think the hospital can save her?"
"Hospital? I’ve seen things like this online. You just pour salt on them and they’ll be fine."
"I didn’t know you watched videos online."
"You don’t?"
"No."
"You should, sir. They have very useful hacks, like this one I just said. I don’t think it works though. But I’d like to try it."
Jacqueline wriggled around, writhing in pain as she pleaded, "Just take me to the hospital, I beg you!"
Jett and Eric paused their conversation, both whipping their heads toward her.
"Keira, where is she?" Jett questioned with a straight face. fr\eewebno vel .c(o)m
The woman grimaced, "I don’t know."
Eric clicked his tongue, returning his attention to Jett.
"On another thought... I’ve seen them use oil."
Jett narrowed his eyes in confusion.
"Oil? How does that work?"
"Simple. You just pour it all over the skin."
Jacqueline’s eyes snapped toward them, "N-no! That doesn’t work. It just makes it worse!"
She immediately regretted this outburst as Jett leaned back and casually supported Eric.
"I’m fascinated. Go ahead and try it. Let’s see if it’s true that it only makes things worse."
Eric got up, scampering to the gallon of oil on the other side of the room.
Picking it up, he paused when he saw the black liquid on the cover and moved it to his nose to sniff.
Scrunching his nose, he raised his eyes to meet Jett’s.
"This isn’t the normal oil I read about. This is engine oil. I don’t think it’ll work."
Jett shrugged, "Oil is oil."
Eric couldn’t help nodding in agreement and began stepping toward her.
Seeing this, she shuddered, "What? No! I already told you I don’t know where she is! I really don’t! But I can help you find out. I promise I can!"
Ignoring her, Jett folded his arms across his chest and probed Eric, "Hurry up, Eric. I need to go be with Kelsie."
"Just to be clear, if this doesn’t work and we end up with a fatality, would it be better to scratch out her nails and face, then give her to the hospital as a cadaver?"
Eric didn’t think twice before refuting, "If she’s oiled up, that’ll be too disgusting, sir. We’ll just dump her in a pothole somewhere."
The casual conversation was eating away at Jacqueline’s nerves.
All this while, she had been smug, confident because of what that man told her.
By now, she thought they would’ve found her location and come to save her. But at this rate, she’d really be dumped in a pothole somewhere, left to rot.
But she was a missing detective. If she was found oiled up and dead, surely they’d know there was foul play and investigate her case.
It wouldn’t take them long to connect the dots and link her to Jett Adler through Kelsie Sutton.
If that happened, there’d be a lot of heat on the Adler family, which would be really bad for them.
With their history, the police would want to do a thorough investigation on them. Surely, Jett Adler wouldn’t want that much heat.
What was she thinking? This was nothing but a bluff. The only reason Jett Adler was keeping her alive this long was obvious: he was yet to find his daughter, and she was the only clue he had.
A wise man like him wouldn’t kill his only clue to finding his kidnapped child...
The sound of a ringing phone suddenly filled the air.
Jett slipped out his phone, his brows knitting into a tight frown when he saw the unknown string of numbers sprawled across his screen.
That this was coming to his personal phone was the most surprising part as only a few people had this number.
After a brief moment, he swiped to answer and pressed it against his ear. "Who is this?"
"Is this Mr. Adler? Jett Adler?" A woman’s cautious voice sounded from the other end.
He hummed, "Yes. Why?"
Immediately, the person exhaled in relief.
"Sir, I’m Molly Meadow, and I work for Ms. Sutton at her practice. I’ve been unable to reach her in the last five hours."
"Something urgent came up on my end and I unfortunately have to close up for a few minutes, but I don’t know what to do with her daughter who’s sleeping in her office."
