Chapter 59: Amalgamation Of Rotten Flesh and Bone
"Let’s split into pairs and search for the passage. I’ll go with Feng Fan, and Lai Niu will go with Wu Yunru," Luo Li instructed.
"Wait, what? Isn’t the Ouija board the passage itself?" Feng Fan asked, his expression puzzled.
Luo Li shook her head. "No. The Ouija board is just the intermediary. The actual passage always opens where the barrier between our world and the other side is weakest. It’s never too far from where the Ouija board was used, and since we’re in a graveyard, I’m almost certain it’s somewhere around here. We just need to find it."
"And how will we know when we find it?" Feng Fan asked.
"Trust me, you’ll know the moment you get close to one," Luo Li replied.
As she explained, Lai Niu and Wu Yunru had already left to search for the passage. Not wanting to waste any more time, Luo Li started walking in the opposite direction, with Feng Fan following closely by her side.
What they didn’t notice, however, was a tall, lanky figure crouched on a tree branch outside the graveyard, its limbs unnaturally long. Hollow eyes followed their every move, filled with an eerie, unblinking stare.
👻👻👻👻👻
"Do you feel like we’re being watched?" Wu Yunru muttered, glancing around warily.
Lai Niu let out a bitter chuckle. "Given the situation, I’d be more surprised if we weren’t being watched. Don’t overthink it; just focus on finding the passage as quickly as possible."
Wu Yunru sighed and moved to take another step forward, but before he could, a cold, dry hand latched onto his shin. He glanced down, his eyes widening in sheer horror—a rotting, skeletal hand had burst from the ground and gripped his leg.
"Zombie!" he screamed, whipping out his baton and smashing it against the arm.
The arm snapped cleanly in half without much resistance, but even as Wu Yunru staggered back, the disembodied hand remained clamped around his leg.
"Fuck! What in the seven heavens is this?!" he shouted, desperately trying to shake it off. He could feel a frigid spiritual energy creeping up his leg, attempting to invade his body. Fortunately, the energy seemed to weaken once the arm had been severed from the rest of the corpse.
Suddenly, a powerful gust of wind whipped past his legs, and the hand was sliced cleanly in half, falling to the ground in two pieces.
Wu Yunru whirled around to find Lai Niu lowering her arm, wisps of spiritual energy dissipating from her fingers. A cold shiver ran down Wu Yunru’s spine.
"Lai Niu, are you trying to turn me into an eunuch?!" he snapped, still shaken by the near miss.
A mocking smile tugged at Lai Niu’s lips. "Don’t you think we have more pressing matters to worry about? Look around; we’re surrounded."
To Wu Yunru’s horror, dozens of corpses began clawing their way out of the ground, their eyes glowing an eerie red as dark, sinister energy oozed from their rotting bodies.
"Kill the living! Kill the living!" one of the corpses screeched, lunging toward Wu Yunru with a speed far too unnatural for a body that had been buried and decayed for years.
Wu Yunru’s expression hardened as he activated his boots, his movements becoming fast and agile like a cheetah. He darted between the advancing corpses gracefully, his baton crashing down and shattering skulls without a hint of mercy.
Unfortunately, his combat style wasn’t suited for handling so many enemies at once. Lai Niu, on the other hand, had no such weakness.
Her eyes glowed with spiritual energy, and her hair billowed behind her as fierce currents of air surged around her. With a sweep of her hands, dozens of wind blades slashed through the horde, slicing the zombies into tiny chunks to ensure they couldn’t rise again.
But to their dismay, the dismembered pieces didn’t stay dead. Each time Lai Niu minced a zombie into pieces, the remains would slowly pull themselves together, gathering not far from the pair. Before long, an amalgamation of rotten flesh and bone began to take shape—a grotesque, writhing mass that defied logic.
Wu Yunru glanced at the abomination and let out a bitter laugh. "Lai Niu, looks like we’re the lucky ones. We just found... the passage."
👻👻👻👻👻
"What in the world is that?" Feng Fan pointed toward a distant spot within the graveyard, his eyes widening in disbelief.
Luo Li turned to follow his gaze, her eyes narrowing as she took in the grotesque sight. A monstrous, amorphous mass writhed on the ground—a nightmarish, slime-like creature made of dark, viscous energy and decomposed flesh. Its body seemed to constantly shift and ripple, with thick, tar-like sludge dripping from its surface.
From the abomination’s body protruded ten massive tentacles formed entirely of interlocking bones, each one snapping and writhing with a life of its own. The bone tentacles lashed out at the ground repeatedly, as if attempting to crush something beneath them. The sound of bones scraping and grinding filled the air, accompanied by a low, rumbling growl that vibrated through the ground.
"Looks like Lai Niu and Wu Yunru found the passage. Let’s go." Without another word, she dashed toward the monstrosity.
Feng Fan blinked, his mouth agape. "That’s what you meant when you said I’d know it when I saw it? Damn it!"
Feng Fan and Luo Li quickly arrived at the location where the slime-like monster was. Lai Niu breathed ragged as she fought against the monster.
Her petite body didn’t allow her to build much stamina, so moving around to evade the tentacles had taken a toll on her body. But when she saw Luo Li and Feng Fan, a smile formed on her face.
"What took you two so long? Luo Li, Feng Fan; help Wu Yunru with the monsters, I’ll close the passage."
She moved toward the place where the first zombie had appeared. Wu Yunru was still killing zombies, but no matter how many he destroyed, more came in their place, as if the amount of flesh and bones to create them was infinite.
