Chapter 23: Offer 4

Sophia let out a sigh. She gave a headshake. "Okay," she replied. "Hurry up." After turning around, she returned to her own apartment to wait.

Adam shut the door. For a minute he leaned against it. He thought he was a fool. He had neglected his vow to her last night because he was so preoccupied with his own sadness. He ran through his small flat. He picked up a fresh change of clothes. He hurried to the restroom and showered as quickly as he had ever done.

He emerged from his apartment ten minutes later. He shut the door and secured it. By the stairs, he could see Sophia was waiting for him. Her arms were crossed as she stood. She gave him a look. He was dressed in a pair of dark pants and a plain but tidy shirt. His hair was combed. He had a respectable appearance.

He gave Sophia a look. She wore an outfit that was both elegant and formal. Despite its simplicity, the design exuded professionalism. For a teacher, it was the ideal ensemble. She looked stunning, in his opinion. That was what he wanted to tell her. However, he paused. He was bashful.

Sophia noticed that he was staring at her. The uneasy silence was broken by her. She pointed to her clothing and asked, "What do you think?" "Is this dress good for a teacher?"

Adam grinned. His hesitancy disappeared. He exclaimed, "It is very nice," with enthusiasm. "I was going to say that just now. You look stunning in it."

Sophia’s cheeks became slightly flushed. She grinned. "Let us go," she referred to. "We are already late."

Together, they descended the steps. There was no longer any uneasiness. They settled into a cozy stillness. A tiny glimmer of hope returned to Adam’s heart. He was strolling beside her.

Together, they were heading somewhere. That was plenty for now. Later, he would handle the interview. He would simply savor the now.

This brief, ideal moment spent with Sophia. Despite its fragility, it was something. And something was better than nothing at the moment. All he could hope was that he would not ruin it.

Once more. He was aware of his propensity to do so. However, he would make every effort to be different now. For her. For himself. He was forced to. There was nothing else to do. He would go into the day with renewed resolve. She would be proud of him. He was forced to.

They spotted Mrs. Gold as they were leaving the apartment complex. She was sweeping the front steps outside. She noticed Sophia and Adam strolling hand in hand. She gave Adam a look. A sly smile appeared on her face.

Adam caught that grin. A chill went through his body. "That smile is really dangerous," he thought. He averted his gaze and trailed Sophia out into the street.

Together, they strolled to the train station. It was a cool, nice morning. A relaxed silence fell between them, and Adam felt it. He had something he wanted to express. He wished to continue the discussion. He inquired, "Is your friend not coming today?" He was referring to Monty.

Sophia grinned. "Actually I already told her yesterday that I was going somewhere for work today," she explained. "So she will not be coming with me."

When Adam heard this, he became quite happy. Having Sophia to himself pleased him. Then they got on the train. Together, they located two seats. One of Adam’s favorite times in life was the drive to school.

The whole time, he spoke to Sophia. He became aware of her life, family, and aspirations. He found he could have a normal conversation with her.

He was not bashful. He did not feel uncomfortable. He was not even aware of how fast the time had gone by.

At last, they reached the school. Outside the main gate, they stood. Adam turned to face the school. It was a big, striking structure. Compared to the high school he had attended, it was far larger. Hundreds of students poured onto the school grounds, as he witnessed. Each of them had a tidy uniform on. They were conversing and laughing. Adam felt uneasy by the sight. He inhaled deeply.

Sophia saw that he was anxious. She touched his shoulder tenderly. "Do not worry," she assured them. She spoke in a comforting tone. "I have already spoken with them on your behalf. All you need to do is conduct a flawless interview. The remainder of your employment is safe.

Adam experienced a twinge of regret. He realized that now was the time to tell her the truth. He ought to let her know that he was already employed. One that brought in millions of cash for him.

Then he turned to face her. She was overjoyed. She felt quite pleased of herself for assisting him. He could not bring himself to let her down. There was no way he could deny her this moment. He glanced at the floor. He inhaled deeply.

"Okay," he muttered.

Every student entered their classes slowly. There was silence on the school grounds. Adam became aware that he had yet to inquire about Sophia’s subject of instruction at the school.

On the train, he had been so engrossed in their chat that he had neglected to inquire.

They were strolling through the school’s lengthy hallway. Lockers were arranged along the walls. The floors had been cleaned and polished. Adam looked across at Sophia. By saying, "I forgot to ask, What subject do you teach here?"

Sophia reddened slightly. "I am not that intelligent," she remarked, grinning at herself. "But I really like to read Japanese literature."

Adam was taken aback. No one he knew had ever been interested in Japanese literature. It appeared to be a very complex and fascinating topic. Sophia interrupted him before he could say anything. At the end of the hallway, she indicated a door. Her words, "This is the principal’s office," "He is probably waiting for you right now. I must attend my class.

Adam gave a nod. "Okay," he replied. A feeling of unease returned to him. The principal was about to confront him. "Best of luck," he said Sophia.

Sophia grinned. "I should be the one saying that to you," she replied. "Good luck. I will be in the instructors’ cabin waiting for you. After giving him one more reassuring glance, she turned and left down the hallway.

Adam watched her leave. He inhaled deeply. He was going to show up for a job interview that he did not desire. A job for which he lacked qualifications.

This is what he had done to himself. It had been a moment of stupid jealousy that had motivated him. He now had to deal with the repercussions. He glanced at the principal’s office door.

It appeared to be the portal to his destruction. Lifting his hand, he knocked. He did not know what he would say. All he could hope for was that he would survive this without completely embarrassing himself.

He wished he could overcome this without letting Sophia down. That was what mattered most. He would not disappoint her. With all the bravery he could conjure, he would take on this challenge. He was forced to. Now there was no going back. He had gone too far.
