Chapter 390: Chapter 390 Interrogation and Inspection

In the time it takes to burn one stick of incense, three Human Skin Masks were completed.

Leng Yu Yan first gave one to Ye Yiheng, then handed another to Song Guo.

"Thank you, Song Guo, for being so attentive. You managed to buy all these materials at once, and even helped purchase the oil lamp."

"It’s nothing, Commandery Princess!"

Song Guo seemed reluctant to peel off the fake mustache. Initially intending to discard it, he hesitated and then slipped it into his sleeve pocket instead.

This scene was witnessed by Leng Yu Yan, who pursed her lips and ultimately did not know how to offer comfort.

Turning her head, she inadvertently saw Ye Yiheng also placing the fake mustache into his sleeve pocket and Leng Yu Yan was stunned.

Song Guo kept it likely because he could not grow a mustache. As for Ye Yiheng, he probably did the same because of his hidden infirmity, his actual situation not much different from Song Guo’s.

Considering this, Leng Yu Yan quietly sighed. The two men before her were both pitiable.

Soon after, all three of them had successfully applied their Human Skin Masks.

Ye Yiheng, who originally had the appearance of an Immortal, had his radiance dimmed, while Song Guo, who was usually smart and cautious, now seemed somewhat dull. Leng Yu Yan, once beauty enough to bring down nations, now had the visage of a modest and demure woman.

Their appearances had all changed drastically, and to those who were not familiar with them, their true faces were indiscernible.

With the Human Skin Masks, it became much easier for them. They found a nondescript inn and rented three rooms to settle down in.

A night passed without incident.

With only half a month left until New Year’s Eve and eager to reach Beilan City as soon as possible, Ye Yiheng decided to upgrade to a larger horse carriage and purchase a few more horses. By traveling day and night, they would likely arrive before the night of New Year’s Eve.

The trio went to the market to buy a horse carriage.

The shopkeeper, noticing their modest attire, introduced a small carriage that could only seat two people.

"The shopkeeper does not seem sincere in doing business," Song Guo pointed at the carriage at the entrance. "The carriage we arrived in is larger than this one, and yet you make such a recommendation. Isn’t that underestimating us?"

The shopkeeper laughed, disdainfully glancing at the ordinary carriage outside, and then introduced a more refined horse carriage drawn by two horses: "How about this one?"

Ye Yiheng replied indifferently, "Too fancy and impractical."

Touching the exquisite carvings on the carriage, the shopkeeper said, "I’m afraid the gentleman can’t afford it."

Hearing that, Ye Yiheng raised an eyebrow. There was nothing to be angry about on the run, so he simply asked, "May I see your largest carriage?"

"You can look, of course."

The shopkeeper laughed, thinking in his heart that they would certainly not be able to afford it, but decided to let them have a look anyway.

Following the shopkeeper’s lead, the three went into the backyard of the shop.

There in the open space of the backyard stood a carriage, unremarkable on the outside but upon closer examination, substantially large.

The shopkeeper proudly opened the carriage door, pointing inside: "There’s a bed in the interior, with a sliding door in front to ensure privacy. Not just that, there are many cabinets inside and several soft couches. The soft couch in the outer area is movable, allowing servants to sleep there at night."

Song Guo was somewhat amazed. Although this carriage could not compare to those of the Eastern Palace, it did feature sliding doors which was quite innovative.

"This carriage requires four horses to be drawn and was expensive to construct. So far, it remains the only one, and no one has inquired about it," the shopkeeper said with a smile. "There are plenty who come to see it out of curiosity like yourselves."

Ye Yiheng looked at the shopkeeper and asked blandly, "How much Silver?"

A carriage from the Eastern Palace could take tens of thousand taels of Silver to construct. Although large, the choice of wood and the interior decorations of this one before him were quite ordinary.

Extending his hand, the shopkeeper showed a number, "The carriage costs one thousand taels, and the four horses two hundred taels, totaling 1,200 taels of Silver."

Ye Yiheng pulled out a stack of silver notes, counted them out for the shopkeeper, "Exactly 1,200 taels."

The shopkeeper stared with shock, taking the silver notes and counting them over and over again. Once he confirmed the amount was correct, he praised, "A generous gesture from the gentleman!"

Leng Yu Yan snatched back the silver note.

"This young lady, what is this..." The shopkeeper became anxious. Could it be that the deal was falling through? If this deal went through, his year would be exceedingly comfortable!

Leng Yu Yan slowly said, "We already have one horse, so we only need three from you. Moreover, our original horse carriage may be plain, but it’s also worth a fair amount. With that in consideration..." She took out two silver notes and handed the rest to the shopkeeper, "Here is one thousand taels for you, what do you think?"

After calculating for a moment in his mind, the shopkeeper’s face immediately lit up with a smile, "Done, acceptable!" Although their carriage looked ordinary, it was fairly new, and the make of their carriage was one of the best-selling models on the market, so he promptly agreed to the terms and instructed a worker to lead the horses over.

After they moved all their belongings from the original carriage to the new one, Ye Yiheng ordered Song Guo to purchase a good number of items, such as pots, pans, and ladles, as well as dry food, dried meat, and fruits. They bought quite a lot.

Leng Yu Yan realized then that someone was planning to use the new carriage as a mobile home. Considering it got colder as they traveled north, and considering Ye Yiheng’s sensitivity to cold and Song Guo’s lack of a change of clothes, she took it upon herself to buy several sets of ready-made clothing for each of them and an additional two quilts.

What the master and servants didn’t expect was that their shopping spree had drawn the attention of the local State Government.

Just as they were about to set off in their new horse carriage, several Government Officials blocked their path. The leading Government Official knocked on the carriage side with his scabbard, "Buying so much, where are you headed?"

Confident in her Disguise Technique and composed in the face of the inquiry, Leng Yu Yan replied, "We’re going to the neighboring state to trade in medicinal herbs, but we didn’t expect it to be so cold, so we bought a few quilts."

Seeing one man and one woman inside the carriage, the officer then asked, "What is your relationship?"

Song Guo hurriedly said, "This is my young master and his young wife. I’m the coachman."

The Government Official kept his probing gaze on them while Leng Yu Yan feigned shyness and leaned closer to Ye Yiheng’s side.

The official, believing they were indeed a couple, exclaimed, "Nowadays, it’s not safe to head north."

Song Guo jumped down from the carriage, subtly handing over some silver to the official, "My young master and his young wife have just married and wish to establish their own household. Taking advantage of the New Year’s season, they’d like to run a round of business. Could you please let us through?"

Weighing the silver in his hand, the official lowered his voice, "You’re in business, you look honest, I’ll just give you a heads-up. It’s okay to go north, just don’t head for Beilan City."

"Rest assured, we are only going to the neighboring state," Song Guo leaned close to the official, feigning curiosity, "But I’m quite curious, why can’t we go to Beilan City?"

Clutching the silver, the official glanced around warily, "There’s an order from above, anyone going to Beilan City is to be executed on sight."

"Thank you, thank you!" Song Guo smiled as he climbed back onto the carriage.

The official tapped on the carriage again, "Go on, get going."

Song Guo nodded with a smile and flicked the reins to start their journey.

The carriage rattled onward.

Inside the carriage, Ye Yiheng clenched his fist. Ye Gaoyun was so ruthless, ordering the execution of anyone going to Beilan City.

As they were leaving the city gate, their carriage was stopped again.

A number of soldiers were carefully inspecting all passersby and vehicles, not overlooking a single thing.

"Get down, all of you get down!" a soldier commanded loudly while pounding on the carriage.

Left with no choice, Ye Yiheng helped Leng Yu Yan down from the carriage. As soon as her feet touched the ground, Leng Yu Yan discovered that her portrait, along with that of a certain someone, were indeed posted on the announcement board. There was one of her, while he had two, one with and one without an eye veil.
