Off Work, Then I Become a Magical Girl -
Book 2: Chapter 30: Baiwu
Vol 2 Chapter 30: Baiwu
An unexpected reinforcement charged onto the battlefield with overwhelming force. The lingering purplish-red Magic Curtain made the scene before them look almost dreamlike. Veronica blinked, triple-checking that she wasn’t hallucinating, before speaking in stunned disbelief:
“Morning Glory? Is that really you?”
She wasn’t sure if this was the “reinforcement” Emerald had mentioned. If it was, it was far beyond anything she had expected—because she had never imagined the person would be Hong Siyu.
After all, the Moon Festival incident had happened less than a month ago. Hong Siyu had only just been sent to The Kingdom for treatment. For her to return to Fangting City so soon was completely unexpected for Veronica.
What was more baffling was that Hong Siyu wasn’t supposed to be capable of transforming into a Magical Girl anymore.
As a Retired Magical Girl, her Magic Source should’ve long since fallen dormant, and her powers as a Magical Girl should’ve been returned. Not to mention that she had previously been under Mors’s control and even modified into a Ravager—after all that, there was no way she could still fight.
But the truth overpowered any logic—the hand supporting Veronica’s knee was undeniably real, and the face before her eyes, once just a memory, was now vividly present.
“It really is me, Senpai.”
The girl, dressed in purplish-red, slowly released her grip, letting Veronica land on her feet. She lowered her head slightly and added, “I’m back. And sorry—I’m late.”“How can you…”
“Shh. Let’s catch up after all this is over—I’ll explain everything then.”
Perhaps it was because of her earlier intimacy, but Hong Siyu looked a little awkward. She held out a notebook in front of Veronica, gently cutting her off before she could say more:
“Right now, we’ve got enemies to deal with.”
With that, she turned to look at Yuan in the distance. Her expression shifted from gentle to taut.
“41422…”
Yuan, however, didn’t react emotionally to her words. Instead, she murmured thoughtfully, “They’re already assigning IDs in the 4-series?”
“Your priorities are so weird! Focus on the fight already!”
Semi jumped in to correct her. “IDs in the 4-series have been around for at least forty years. Haven’t you noticed that a bunch of girls in Claw Mark have those numbers?”
“Who goes around listening to other people’s Badge IDs, seriously?”
Yuan waved dismissively. “As for focusing on the battle—no need to remind me.”
“Be careful. If she’s a Badge-class girl and pulls out a weird Domain, you could seriously get blindsided.”
Semi added nervously, “Let’s wrap this up fast. If more reinforcements show up, we’ll be in trouble.”
“Relax. I never planned on underestimating her.”
Yuan subtly adjusted her stance. Her drunken, unfocused eyes sharpened slightly, becoming cold and keen. “Even when a lion hunts a rabbit—it uses its full strength.”
The Reception Room tensed with silence. Neither side said another word.
Then—boom.
With an explosive sound, Yuan vanished from where she stood. Her fist appeared in front of Hong Siyu at a speed no ordinary person could register. Behind her, the wall that had once stood intact was completely obliterated.
Glass, concrete, bricks, steel—the entire wall structure disintegrated into dust, scattering like fog in the air and drifting down slowly.
And in front of her fist stood a thick Magical Barrier.
To call it a “barrier” felt like an understatement. It looked more like a Magical Wall, over half a meter thick, completely absorbing the force of Yuan’s punch. Everything behind the wall remained untouched.
Hong Siyu opened her hand, revealing an open notebook. Runes pulsed with strange light across the pages made of Magic Constructs, forming the barrier that had blocked Yuan’s strike.
“Not bad.”
Though her punch had failed, Yuan didn’t seem annoyed. Instead, she looked pleased, a hunter’s gleam flashing through her drunken haze. She stepped back slightly, relaxed her fist, dropped her wrist—and then launched another strike.
Crash!
The next hit struck the same spot. This time, the unbreakable barrier cracked open. Blow after blow landed at lightning speed on the same point, and with a thunderous crash, the entire Magical Wall came crumbling down.
Having destroyed the barrier, Yuan showed no unnecessary emotion. She simply curled her fingers and smirked slightly at Hong Siyu.
“Again.”
No sooner had she spoken than the space around her twisted. Multiple magic spears zipped past her from seemingly nowhere.
They appeared as suddenly as they vanished, with no discernible spell structure, striking from bizarre angles. But Yuan dodged them effortlessly with minimal movements.
Just as she looked back toward Hong Siyu, a torrent of Chaotic Magic Currents suddenly poured down from above, enveloping her completely.
BOOM!
The blinding Magic Light nearly made Veronica squint shut.
And that was just the beginning.
Next came Spatial Distortion. Then Soul Rays. Then Hypnotic Curses. Then Binding Seals. One after another, an endless barrage of spells turned the tiny Reception Room into rubble within seconds.
Yuan’s movements were swift and surreal, twisting her body through the magical onslaught like a boneless creature. She zigzagged through the barrage, eventually flying out of the Countermeasure Bureau and streaking across the sky.
Hong Siyu gripped her notebook tightly. Though her expression was tense, her hands didn’t falter. She flipped the pages rapidly, and with each tap, a high-grade spell burst forth—without chants, gestures, or even recorded runes. They simply manifested, as if they’d always existed.
Veronica knew well—this was “Memoir,” Hong Siyu’s Magical Armor.
Its appearance was nothing more than an unremarkable notebook. At first, it had no special function—just a medium for recording text.
But that didn’t mean it was useless. On the contrary, “Memoir” had incredible potential: anything written in its pages could be magically reconstructed—so long as the user had enough Magic.
“Anything” included mundane items like rocks, pencils, lipstick—and extraordinary things like Magic Spells. As long as Hong Siyu had recorded the spell in Memoir, she could instantly re-cast it with magic.
Of course, this ability had limits. The recreated object could never exceed the accuracy or strength of what was recorded—and if her magic was lacking, the result could be distorted or even fail entirely.
Which is why, in the beginning, Hong Siyu had no real combat power. Her Magic was too weak to recreate anything meaningful.
It wasn’t until the time when Veronica was approaching retirement that things changed.
After Advancing to Leaf-tier, Hong Siyu gained the ability to study and construct spells, and suddenly “Memoir” became a powerful casting tool. While other girls spent hours constructing and fine-tuning their spells, she could simply write them down and reuse them with unparalleled fluency.
She could even optimize them. If today’s Magical Barrier cost 1% less energy to cast, she’d update her record. If tomorrow’s was 5% thicker, she’d log that too. Eventually, her spell library became a collection of perfected, high-efficiency formulas.
Magical Girls like this had a nickname in The Kingdom: “Artillery.”
And Hong Siyu—Morning Glory—was one of the best.
In the ruined Reception Room, Hong Siyu kept her eyes locked on Yuan, tracking her every move. Spells exploded like fireworks, the relentless firepower turning heads even among bystanders on the street.
Even Yuan, with her agile skills, was feeling the pressure. And with Semi along for the ride, the black cat Fairy looked absolutely terrified.
“Do something, you idiot!”
Semi clung to Yuan’s shoulder, narrowly avoiding another blast. Some of his fur had been singed off. “Stop playing around! If you keep this up, I’m toast!”
“Easier said than done… It’s hard to get in close.”
Yuan dodged another volley midair, grumbling. “You know I suck at spells. Trying to counter and close the distance at the same time is just asking too much.”
“Then use your Domain! Or your Magical Armor!”
Semi yowled, “Just finish her off already! Or I’ll go tattle to the boss!”
“Using my Domain on an Artillery Girl like her just feels… cheap.”
Another near-miss grazed her forehead. Yuan flipped onto the wall of the Countermeasure Bureau, pushed off, and broke through another ring of magic beams. “But if she’s going all-out, I suppose I should return the favor.”
As she spoke, a ribbon of Liquid Metal coiled up her arm. Inky black and fluid like paint, it danced through the air and began forming patterns.
The mysterious Liquid Metal had been swirling around her the whole time, but she had barely used it offensively—until now.
Hovering in the air, she twisted her body into an upside-down stance, facing Hong Siyu.
She spread her arms, hands drifting apart. Between them, the black liquid formed into a Midnight Bow.
“Hyakubu—Draw.”
As she whispered, a dark arrow formed on the string—drawn like a stroke of ink, turning real in an instant. Even before it was fired, the air grew colder.
Then she let go.
Swish. The arrow shot straight for Hong Siyu’s throat.
The distance looked long but was barely 100 meters. None of the spells between them could stop the arrow. In a blink, it was already at her.
Though it was slim, the arrow carried terrifying Magic—Veronica could tell it was easily at Flower-tier power, maybe higher. If it hit, not only would the Countermeasure Bureau be destroyed, but the entire district might be wiped out.
And if it hit a person, even a Magical Girl, it would destroy their True Form and take their life without mercy.
Veronica knew—Hong Siyu had only ever been Leaf-tier before retiring. She couldn’t survive this hit. If it landed, she would die.
Realizing the danger, Veronica summoned her Magical Armor instantly, placing it in front of Hong Siyu while pulling at her with Threads, trying to yank her out of the way.
But before her threads could touch her, she heard a soft, reassuring voice.
“It’s okay, Senpai. She can’t hurt me.”
Bathed in the glow of purple-red Magic Light, Hong Siyu turned slightly toward her. The serene smile on her face shone with a confidence Veronica had never seen before.
“I told you—I’m back now. I’ll never let you get hurt again.”
Then, she looked up at the incoming arrow, closed her notebook with one hand, and spoke clearly:
“Morning Glory—Grand Bloom: Hundredfold Memory.”
