Off Work, Then I Become a Magical Girl
Book 2: Chapter 7: Nini

Vol 2 Chapter 7 Nini

Green magic.

Of course Lin Yun knew who that referred to.

There was only one Magical Girl who had participated in the orphanage incident and whose true identity might’ve been exposed to Tian Sheng, the former caregiver—Bai Jingxuan.

Tian Sheng’s change being related to Bai Jingxuan? That was a possibility Lin Yun had never considered before.

He already knew that Bai Jingxuan was a Deviant—a rare classification even among Magical Girls—and possessed incredibly rare healing magic. But what did any of that have to do with Tian Sheng being stitched into a Ravager and somehow benefiting from it?

That was completely outside Lin Yun’s knowledge base.

He knew very little about the true nature of Deviants, and even less about what secrets Bai Jingxuan might be hiding. So even though Tian Sheng raised a reasonable theory, Lin Yun couldn’t give any useful reply.

—Ask Emerald in a few days?

So mused Veronica, now back in her Magical Girl form, as she walked the path toward the Secret Base.

She couldn’t think of a better solution for now.

As the Research Institute’s chief, Emerald should have some insights about Deviants. If Veronica went to ask her directly, she’d likely find some answers. Besides, before they’d parted earlier that day, Emerald had already said she was welcome to stop by—so paying a visit wouldn’t be considered rude.

Still… wasn’t it all too coincidental?

Emerald had just mentioned offering help with difficult questions that afternoon, and that very evening, Veronica encountered a mystery she couldn’t solve. That coincidence left a bad taste in her mouth—like someone had planned it.

She entered the residential complex, exchanged a familiar greeting with the security guard, and walked up to the Secret Base’s front door. Pulling out the key from her pocket—

Click.

Before she could even insert the key into the lock, the door swung open.

“Veronica! You’re back!” Lin Xiaolu burst out from inside like an excited puppy who’d waited all day. Arms wide, she almost lunged forward for a hug.

“I’m back,” Veronica said calmly, gently blocking Xiaolu’s hands. “Any anomalies around here today?”

“Nope! Not even a traffic accident, much less a Ravager attack!”

Xiaolu wasn’t giving up on that hug just yet. She reached again—but Veronica blocked her firmly. Defeated, she sulked with puffed cheeks. “Don’t worry. We’re not rookies anymore!”

They were talking about the safety of Luoming District, which Lin Xiaolu had been patrolling today.

After the Moon Festival incident, Veronica needed time to recover. At the same time, her three juniors had shown significant growth during the battle. So she began encouraging them to manage separate areas of the city like real Magical Girls.

Lin Xiaolu handled Luoming District, Xia Liang took Xizhao District, and Bai Jingxuan managed Lixing District. Each girl dealt with incidents and Ravager activity in their zone, only calling for help when they couldn’t handle something alone.

The plan had been running for over a week now—and was working well.

There had been two Ravager incidents since then—one in Xiaolu’s district, the other in Jingxuan’s. Both had resolved the fights on their own with minimal injury.

And today? According to Xiaolu, all quiet.

Feeling reassured, Veronica stepped inside the entryway and casually chatted with Xiaolu as they headed into the living room.

Xiaolu’s warmth and cheerfulness had only started in the last two weeks. Before that, she had shown admiration and respect—but never this level of open affection.

It left Veronica feeling oddly pleased. A little confused… but pleased.

After all, who wouldn’t enjoy being closer with their daughter?

As they entered the living room, they found Xia Liang calmly seated on the couch watching TV. She lifted her hand in greeting and offered a gentle smile as they arrived.

From the dining area, came a soft fluttering sound—followed by a flying pink puppy and, dragging behind it, a droopy-looking pink kitten.

“Good evening, Lady Veronica,” the pink puppy said politely. “Dinner is ready. Shall I serve it now?”

This was Nini—the originally appointed Seeder for Fangting City.

She had once guided Veronica in secret via phone calls, and was only rescued from the Countermeasure Bureau after Mors had been executed. At the time, Nini was barely clinging to life.

Thankfully, fairies are notoriously resilient. Once freed from Black Cinders Dawn, it didn’t take long for Nini to recover—faster even than Veronica herself.

As the senior that Moko had once wanted to follow, Nini was a well-rounded, qualified Seeder. She was not only deeply knowledgeable and impeccably mannered—but also a superb cook. To show her gratitude for being rescued, she’d been staying at the Secret Base and preparing all meals.

Unlike the gluttonous Moko, Nini—despite being just one fairy—could handle the full dietary needs of all the Magical Girls. Her meals were both delicious and perfectly balanced.

She also monitored their mana training with precision, predicted Ravager attacks ahead of time, and managed external relations with tact and maturity. It was only after meeting her that the girls of Fangting City finally understood why, in other cities, Seeders were always the squad’s core.

After just a few days of working with her, Lin Xiaolu had demanded Moko be replaced and Nini reinstated.

But Nini had refused.

“No matter how well I perform now, I was once a failure here,” she had said. “I failed to protect the Magical Girl I had signed with. I have no right to hold this position anymore.”

“And since the Royal Court has already reassigned Moko as this city’s official Seeder, my position has effectively been revoked. I’ll return to the Kingdom and await orders.”

So why was she still here?

To discipline Moko.

That was also why Moko currently looked so depressed.

Nini treated the Magical Girls with warmth and respect—but to Moko, she was like a demonic drill sergeant. She scolded him harshly every single day. And the once-unruly Moko? Completely cowed.

He never dared talk back. It left the girls thoroughly stunned.

Whatever punishment he had suffered today was unknown—but judging by his sulking, it had been rough.

Veronica glanced briefly at Moko’s dejected form but said nothing. She scanned the hallway and suddenly asked:

“Where’s Bosetsu?”

“Xiaoxuan went back to the orphanage today,” Xia Liang replied. “She was looking for something. Won’t be back tonight.”

“You want me to message her in the group chat?” she offered.

“She’s not here?” Veronica blinked, then shook her head. “Don’t bother. It’s not that urgent.”

It wasn’t often that Bai Jingxuan returned to the orphanage—she likely wanted to catch up with familiar staff and old friends. No need to disturb her.

That was Veronica’s reasoning.

Besides, the changes in Tian Sheng weren’t harmful. Neither he nor Veronica were particularly anxious about solving the mystery—one day’s delay wouldn’t matter.

Tomorrow night, she’d ask Bai Jingxuan.

With that thought, Veronica joined her juniors and Nini at the dining table to start dinner.

And indeed, her thinking wasn’t wrong—Tian Sheng’s transformation wasn’t an immediate threat.

But what she didn’t expect… was that her next encounter with Bai Jingxuan wouldn’t come tomorrow.

It would come the very next day, in a completely unexpected way.

That morning, after returning from the orphanage, Bai Jingxuan headed straight to the Countermeasure Bureau—and walked into the Director’s Office on her own initiative.
