Chapter 845: Chapter 785: Repairs

The body of the deceased, Ma Jianxin, had been processed for three or four days.

Although the investigation was complete, there was still a long way to go before the case was closed. Evidence that needed to be organized and reports that must be done, nothing could be omitted.

The comfort Jiang Yuan felt came from not having to do these tasks that sounded like wrapping up but actually accounted for seventy to eighty percent of the workload.

Captain Cui was so busy he felt weak, then he watched Jiang Yuan go hunting in the morning, and in the afternoon return with a dozen petty thieves, increasing their workload once again, and he couldn’t help but contemplate advising him.

Just as this thought surfaced, Xiao Si hurriedly knocked on Captain Cui’s door, "There’s good news."

"What is it?" Captain Cui sat up.

"Jiang Yuan broke up a gambling den, apprehended a dozen drug users, and brought them back—everyone’s rushing to claim them!"

Hearing this, Captain Cui thought it was a gift—why not hurry to claim it!

In Beijing, catching drug users was relatively easy. But what was considered easy wasn’t necessarily more relaxing than catching burglars. Moreover, drug users were generally more marginalized than petty thieves; many didn’t even have cell phones, lived on the outskirts of the city, or even under bridges. Occasionally, someone would spot them, but when the police went searching, they often couldn’t be found.

For the Beijing Bureau police, drug users were somewhat like blackfish in a pond; once they appeared, capturing them was very hard, catching a big fish wasn’t easy either, but they couldn’t simply not make the effort as they could easily harm the other fish in the pond.

In the yard, several team leaders had already arrived, all dressed in coats, hands in pockets, looking jubilant as if they were coming to collect candy.

"Our team is exactly three short; we were saying this month would be tough."

"Feeding the dog can’t all be done in one go. Our team is also short three; we only need two, and for the rest of the time, we’ll strive to dig up another ourselves."

"Can’t you stop being so competitive? You all got your chances in the first half of the year, and now you’re only short three or two; our team is short by five, we’re really struggling..."

The group argued noisily, naturally happy about the giveaway.

After a while, Tao Lu also came over and began to oversee the division—a meeting to distribute the suspects.

Captain Cui knew it would be like this and feigned indignation, "You guys never want the petty thieves Jiang Yuan brings back. We handle them all, and now that there’s something good, you all rush over. It can’t be like this, what does this look like?"

Xiao Si: "Like vultures."

Captain Cui glared at Xiao Si, "What are you saying, you brat?"

"That brat has always been like this. He speaks without restraint; makes people want to tear him apart and sew him back together." The commander of Team Seven looked at Xiao Si as if he were an abandoned child.

Xiao Si responded with a defiant smile, "Mostly because Captain Cui is willing to listen to advice, Old Peng, you’re not. You don’t heed good advice; you’re a muddled ruler."

"You’ve been with the Fourth Team, and now you call me Old Peng?" the commander of Team Seven grinned.

Xiao Si nodded, "A ruler unloved by his subjects won’t have a good temple name."

Amidst the laughter, Mu Zhiyang strutted into the hall, holding a stack of printouts.

The drug users were all sent to the interrogation center and had no right to loiter in the hall; everyone didn’t care much about who they were specifically.

Drug users were simply how ordinary police officers described and understood ordinary drug offenders; no one delved deeply into their emotions, understood their sorrows, or grasped the life stories behind them—that was for artists to discuss, who might even be drug users themselves.

Some always liked to make decisions against their ancestors’ wishes and then expected the mainstream world to respect them; unfortunately, the mainstream world was never that great, only offering returns that matched its interests rather than morality.

Under Tao Lu’s distribution, the drug users’ names were distributed among the teams.

Next, each team went to interrogate the drug users they had just been assigned, to see if they could uncover other suspects or cases. It all depended on them now.

Everyone was unusually proactive.

It was also because the Zhengguang Bureau hadn’t had any major cases recently, so everyone had the capacity to focus on these smaller objectives.

If there had been an unresolved homicide, they wouldn’t have been able to focus on this at all.

While Tao Lu was still there, Liu Wenkai stepped forward and said, "Tao, we in Ningtai have just nabbed some drug users, and it’s quite likely we will be arresting more, possibly even drug traffickers. Do you think you could help us coordinate with the Drug Enforcement Brigade, especially regarding the necessary equipment, so we can get things set up in advance?"

If anyone else had made such a request, Tao Lu would likely have directly dismissed it. But since Liu Wenkai was speaking on behalf of Jiang Yuan, Tao Lu gave it some consideration and asked, "What equipment do you need?"

Liu Wenkai, who actually had experience in drug enforcement, replied without hesitation, "A portable X-ray machine, trace evidence detector, and police dogs."

Tao Lu raised an eyebrow, "How big of an operation are you planning?"

"It’s better to be prepared. At least we should be able to secure them when needed," Liu Wenkai said.

Tao Lu thought for a moment and said, "We definitely have those items, so it’s not a big problem... but after all, we are the Criminal Police Brigade, our preparations might not be as thorough as specialized units."

Among these items, police dogs are naturally capable of detecting drugs, but it’s not that simple. Different dogs undergo different training, and can recognize different types of drugs. Another point is that the working time for a police dog is actually very short, mainly because their sense of smell is only sharp for a limited time, after which their efficiency and accuracy significantly decrease.

The advantage of a portable X-ray machine is its long working time, which allows for X-raying various objects, such as car wheels or fuel tanks—commonly used for smuggling drugs.

Trace evidence detectors are now quite common in airports. Passengers, upon entering an airport, are often swiped with a piece of paper by the security officer, who then inserts it into a machine—that’s the trace evidence detector, which can detect substances down to the nanogram level. However, those used in airports primarily target explosives and are slightly different from those used by police for drug detection.

But all these items have one thing in common—they are expensive.

Not to mention the police dogs, which are precious assets that money can’t buy. A portable X-ray machine alone costs over a hundred thousand Yuan each, and often, one was not enough.

Trace evidence detectors are even more expensive, and theoretically, more are needed.

But these items are indeed very useful. For instance, with a portable X-ray machine, every suspicious vehicle can be inspected, which is much more stable than using dogs.

And the advantage of using dogs is also significant. They are actually the most efficient drug detection tool. In theory, a drug-sniffing dog can inspect the contents of a truck in just five to six minutes. Moreover, they can sniff people, which X-ray machines cannot do.

"If we really fall short, I can bring some over from Ningtai. We have gathered some basic equipment there," Huang Qiangmin casually suggested.

"No need to be polite—it’s just equipment," Tao Lu was not keen on using Huang Qiangmin’s equipment; he wasn’t even sure where it had come from. Hesitating briefly, he added, "As for the police dogs, we would need the cooperation of the K9 unit, and they can’t be dispatched at a moment’s notice."

Police dogs have working hour requirements, typically avoiding overtime when possible,

"We have police dogs too," said Huang Qiangmin confidently. The workload for the K9 team in Ningtai County was incredibly light, almost to the point of affecting their training. Sending them to the Zhengguang Bureau to work could be considered a sort of rental.

Tao Lu thought it over and agreed, then added, "Drug enforcement cases are quite unique, so Jiang Yuan also needs to ensure his safety. Actually, the bureau still has quite a backlog of cases..."

"Let’s rest, deal with the backlog later, and allow everyone some time to recuperate," Jiang Yuan replied sincerely.

Tao Lu smiled wryly and nodded.

"If we are to transfer Dazhuang here, it’d be best to check out the working and training environment for the police dogs on their side first," Jiang Yuan thought of Dazhuang, whom he had not seen for a long time and felt his mood lift. He discussed the matter further while texting his father.

Dogs are different from humans; humans often like to try various local specialties, whereas dogs usually prefer familiar smells.

And speaking of Ningtai’s food, the best by far was produced by the Jiang Family Ranch.
