Chapter 817: Chapter 759: Leading by Example

"Your approach? What Xu... approach?"

Qi Changye came to Jiang Yuan, prepared to ramp up the investigation, but when it came to it, he found his mouth a bit sluggish.

It was like he was earning three thousand a month, planning to buy himself a Rolex. The decision had already been made, and he’d prepared mentally; but facing the cashier, he still didn’t want to easily say the words "I’ll take it."

Jiang Yuan smiled and said, "Xu Taining flew back."

Qi Changye let out a sigh of relief and smiled, "So he flew back..."

"The transportation in Beijing isn’t the issue," Jiang Yuan said, silencing Qi Changye with a single sentence.

Qi Changye made a bitter face, "Give it to me straight, please."

Investigation funds and Huang Qiangmin’s basic infrastructure support funds were two different concepts. The amount required would be much larger and was indispensable. Talking about money was a vulgar matter, but resources were a fact of reality; without money... Without money, you couldn’t even afford reagents for a dog’s DNA.

Jiang Yuan, however, never haggled over finances. He didn’t have that concept but merely watched Qi Changye with amusement and said, "I suggest that the first step is to gather all the botanists together to continue searching for bodies."

"Getting organized is necessary," Qi Changye managed to say with a smile but then sighed, "Inviting them here was indeed for this purpose, and it’s certain that it will take time to search for other possible remains, but now... can we handle it?"

He glanced at the corpse on Jiang Yuan’s autopsy table.

But that wasn’t the only reason. Six bodies were already quite a few; from the commander’s perspective, the autopsy reports for these six bodies hadn’t been released yet, and corresponding leads hadn’t been investigated. Having even more might not necessarily be meaningful.

However, if there were more bodies, they would definitely attract more attention.

For Qi Changye and his colleagues, the espionage case a few years ago had been carried out very well, but the appearance of so many unidentified corpses made it easy for others to feel there were holes in the case, giving a sense of numerous defects. This was a bit hard to swallow.

Nevertheless, Qi Changye quickly adjusted his mood, shook his head, and said, "Then let’s call out the botanists. The more bodies we find, the more leads we’ll have."

"Because they’ll be slower to identify them, it’s best to organize this work now to prevent delays later on," Jiang Yuan reassured Qi Changye in return.

Qi Changye quickly asked, "Do you mean it will not be easy to find bodies afterward?"

"The easy-to-find bodies have already been searched for once, what remains will definitely be harder to locate, and will likely require repeated verification," Jiang Yuan replied, a bit embarrassed.

He had spent two days marking the locations where he thought it was most likely to find bodies.

Then, not to mention the lower technical proficiency of the other botanists, the difficulty had already increased by at least one level.

Moreover, digging up bodies from a hillside, huffing and puffing to uncover one, was extremely exhausting. But if you huffed and puffed and dug for half a day and found nothing, the difficulty of the work soared.

"Alright then. Let’s start searching," Qi Changye wasn’t sure if he felt relieved.

Jiang Yuan continued to smile, saying, "Let them search for bodies for a couple of days, just as I would have completed the autopsies here. Then, we can invite everyone to come and collect pollen."

Collecting pollen didn’t mean they had to rely on legal botany for the investigation. It wasn’t even clear if the six bodies belonged to the same case. As a forensic scientist, Jiang Yuan naturally aimed to collect as much evidence as possible.

Qi Changye now understood a bit more and thought of Jiang Yuan’s remarkable capabilities in forensic botany—he didn’t understand it at all, which made him even more confident in Jiang Yuan’s skills!

"Also, we need to replenish manpower as soon as possible. Once I complete the autopsies here, no matter who is in charge of the investigation, we cannot run short of people," Jiang Yuan urged this time.

"Okay, I’ll get the paperwork done as soon as possible," Qi Changye said firmly, resolving to transfer dozens of people over, though it would involve numerous procedures.

Fortunately, the entire process was streamlined. Now, police stations operated like pump stations, transferring staff from the Ministry down to the county bureau, all striving to reallocate personnel. Qi Changye just needed to make an effort to run around, then pay for the plane tickets of dozens of people, and find accommodations for them, which would be regarded as an initial success in securing manpower from the two squadrons.

Two days later.

Jiang Yuan finished the autopsy and, after cleaning up, went home to start preparing ingredients for his father’s meal.

The bones he had picked out today had all been washed clean, and he himself was washed clean enough; theoretically, there should have been no odor.

Huang Qiangmin and the others who arrived in succession also had no objections.

Everyone pitched in to help prepare for the upcoming dinner for a hundred people.

Even in Jiang Fuzhen, where large village feasts were common, they still needed people to help out.

"What’s the main course today?" Liu Jinghui also came to help and rolled up his sleeves as if he was accustomed to doing chores at home.

"Lamb or beef?" Jiang Yuan guessed.

"Boiled beef ribs." Jiang Fuzhen, who was always keen and alert in the kitchen, heard their conversation and poked his head out.

"So it’s beef ribs, nice, nice." Liu Jinghui nodded in approval.

"Yeah, I reserved a spot for beef short ribs because they yield more meat when cut and are fragrant when cooked. The workers had never cut it this way before; we even did a trial cut." Jiang Fuzhen bragged about the details only he knew, then chuckled and went back to the kitchen.

Liu Jinghui looked at Jiang Yuan and said, "You father and son have quite an enthusiasm for bones."

Jiang Yuan spread his hands, knowing that after becoming a forensic doctor, any involvement in kitchen work would earn him comments of a similar vein. Even though they were cooking meat today, he could still receive remarks about the inseparability of meat and bones.

As the kitchen began to emit delicious aromas, the Ningtai County First Squadron led by Wu Junhao and the Ningtai County Second Squadron led by Liu Wenkai arrived one after the other... at Jiang Yuan’s house.

"Everyone rest first, then have a bite to eat; in a while I’ll take you to where you’ll be staying..." Huang Qiangmin also carried the neighborly presence of a local boss, his smile curving up into a 5.5-degree grin.

The police officers didn’t fuss, finding seats for themselves while sharing the happenings of their journey and quietly inquiring about the situation here.

Everyone wisely refrained from asking about the case. On one hand, they were unsure who among them was part of the special case team and who was not; on the other hand, they all understood that once work began tomorrow, their minds would surely be filled with case briefings.

"The beef ribs are here!"

Jiang Fuzhen’s call seemed to pull everyone back to Ningtai County a few months earlier.

Wu Junhao couldn’t help but laugh. He had been transferred to a local police station before, but now he was back and had been sent to support the capital, which ironically made him feel somewhat at ease.

Huang Qiangmin patted Wu Junhao on the shoulder, saying, "Your task here is crucial, so enjoy yourself for today."

"Huh? Is there danger?" Wu Junhao quickly caught on and fixed his gaze on Mu Zhiyang.

"Haven’t really encountered any yet." Mu Zhiyang felt unjustly accused.

"The situation is quite complicated." Huang Qiangmin didn’t elaborate.

"No worries, our squad is here and we’ll ensure Captain Jiang doesn’t suffer so much as a scratch," Wu Junhao rubbed his shiny bald head and laughed heartily.

In front of Jiang Yuan, the system’s screen slowly emerged and, in one breath, popped up two tasks:

Task 1: Protect

Task Content: While protecting yourself, also ensure the safety of your comrades. The entire team is required to avoid on-duty injuries.

...

Task 2: Lead by Example

Task Content: As a criminal science and technology officer, you can occasionally be on the frontline, setting an example for others.
