Chapter 803: Chapter 746: Conclusion

Four corpses tied up, a thick column of water shot up high, gushing out of the dam.

Tao Lu stood grimly by the shore of the small reservoir, staring silently at the vast blue water.

The reason for finding this reservoir was simple: the rights to operate the reservoir belonged to the left protector of the illegal group. In fact, when they built their first set of mansions, it was with the strong support of this left protector and several of his disciples.

During the investigation, those who knew about this situation naturally would not volunteer the information, a common problem during investigations. The depth of the inquiry was limited, and one could only obtain answers to the preset questions. To expand, especially for the investigators to take initiative, would require lowering the intensity of the inquiry.

Thus, influential figures like Xu Taining would optimize the preset questions and even the intensity of investigations in different areas—even so, inquiries were just that, not truth serums, and it was hard to obtain answers to questions that hadn’t previously been anticipated.

The water level in the reservoir gradually fell, revealing construction debris and other objects at the bottom.

A uniformed detective crouched on a tricycle, camera in hand, beginning to film the bottom of the water.

Several corners of the reservoir were manned, but it wasn’t possible to cover every area; they still needed the tricycle to make rounds.

Because if there were more than one corpse below, they likely wouldn’t be clustered together.

"There’s a box here!" Someone shouted, and the closest electric tricycle immediately headed over.

The detective standing on the tricycle took a steady stance, looking as if he had been trained.

However, seeing the cautious demeanor of the policeman driving the tricycle, Jiang Yuan suddenly understood the condition for using a three-wheeler.

Years ago, when road conditions everywhere were poor, the three-wheeler was indeed a handy device.

"Is it a box for holding corpses?" Jiang Yuan arrived and a policeman asked him.

Jiang Yuan leaned forward for a look, the water had mostly drained, but the distance was still too great. He could only smile and shake his head, saying, "Can’t tell. Let’s go down and check later."

There was still a lot of water and silt at the bottom of the reservoir, now they had to rely on water pumps to drain it.

About a dozen water pumps roared together, generating immense noise but not very efficient. However, it was much cheaper than using divers, and most importantly, it made the forensic doctors’ work easier. If divers were to bring up the remains, not to mention whether all the remains would be retrieved, the environment for discarding the bodies would be ruined.

Pumping was the best option, but if it was a common case with fewer deaths or a larger body of water, they might have to resort to dredging.

Soon, the water by the shore receded, and two forensic doctors were lowered down using ropes, sinking into the mud up to their buttocks.

The two helped each other to pull their legs out, then moved to the nearest leather suitcase, took a look around, and then turned and shouted, "It’s a corpse!"

Their tone was slightly jubilant, which might sound quite unpleasant to outsiders, but for these two low-ranking young forensic doctors, struggling through the mud and seeing the result was somewhat exciting.

Tao Lu’s expression wasn’t so good; confirming it was a corpse, he sighed heavily: "These people are really ruthless."

Now that the criminals had been caught, the murderers were very likely facing the death penalty—any additional corpses were just that, an added regret.

Even after so many years as a detective, the number of corpses in this case still made Tao Lu shudder.

"I’m going down." Jiang Yuan donned a full leather suit, tightened his belt, fastened his safety harness, and followed Zhan Kan down into the reservoir.

Mu Zhiyang watched from above, looking very tense.

Below the reservoir, years of accumulated mud sunk underfoot; a third of the suitcase containing the corpses was buried in the mud.

Jiang Yuan struggled to the site, first examining the surface of the suitcase. He saw a black travel suitcase with several large holes stabbed in it. Peering into the holes, he could see bones, rotten mud, and a clump of plastic.

Zhan Kan immediately understood, saying, "They punched holes in the suitcase, so it wouldn’t float up?"

"Right, there might still be weights inside, like the dumbbells in Zhang Lizhen’s case." After Jiang Yuan had inspected the surface and confirmed that photos had been taken, he checked the outside parts and then used a rope to pull over a plastic basket. Four people together lifted the suitcase into it. Naturally, someone pulled on the rope, dragging it towards the reservoir’s edge and then lifting it up.

The entire process was complex, aimed at preserving the original condition as much as possible, and the erected lifting machinery by the reservoir still symbolized substantial expenses.

Moving corpses from the reservoir could be compared to moving to a high-rise building without an elevator.

One suitcase was yet to be dealt with when another appeared ahead.

Jiang Yuan and the others continued moving forward, quickly pulled it over, and unsurprisingly, there was still a corpse inside.

"It looks like it was dismembered." Jiang Yuan looked inside through the larger hole, not surprised.

The suitcase was rather small; dismemberment made it easier to pack.

Jiang Yuan methodically dragged the corpse from the dried-up reservoir and transported it away.

A total of six, not surprising at all.

The number of corpses involved in the case reached as many as 26.

Given that Huang Jianzun and his followers totaled just over 40, the 26 corpses could certainly be described as maniacal.

"All the suitcases have holes punched in them, Zhang Lizhen’s suitcase doesn’t," Jiang Yuan climbed up to the reservoir, and the first thing he said to Tao Lu highlighted the issue.

Tao Lu shuddered subconsciously, then quickly explained, "In Zhang Lizhen’s case, someone confessed. It happened when they were abandoning the body; they slipped while dragging the suitcase, and the corpse fell into the river and was washed away. Huang Jianzun knew about this and was very angry, eventually deciding to move..."

Jiang Yuan paused, then slowly nodded, "That also makes sense, though it’s quite coincidental."

"Losing seven corpses, only one was a mistake. There were two people at the scene, plus the moving, and multiple people knew the details, it should be fine now..." Tao Lu conveniently explained, "They only punched holes in the suitcases here at the reservoir to prevent things inside from leaking out and dirtying the vehicles."

"Understood." Jiang Yuan recalled the process of dissecting Zhang Lizhen’s corpse, nodded, and said, "I’m heading to the dissection center now."

He was also exhausted today, and having discovered so many corpses in one go, he didn’t feel like talking.

Tao Lu nodded, "Thank you for your hard work."

He didn’t have much in the way of requests for this round of dissections, although determining the cause of death was still necessary, and having a time of death would be even better; but since Huang Jianzun and his group were undermining each other, from the police perspective, most of the detective work was already completed.

In theory, as long as what was done satisfied the prosecution and wasn’t sent back for additional investigation, the task would be considered completed.

Nevertheless, Jiang Yuan meticulously performed dissections on each corpse.

The next day, Jiang Yuan even brought out the bodies examined previously and checked them again.

Zeng Lianrong was quite moved by this, especially after reading Jiang Yuan’s report, and held a long lecture with a group of young forensic doctors: "Look at him, see how quickly he’s improving. Every corpse is very important. No matter how the case is progressing, doing your best on every body is fundamental..."

Jiang Yuan was somewhat unable to pay attention to external affairs.

With the case concluded, the previous bodies also began to reveal their stories.

Zhang Lizhen’s legacy—Guitar (LV2): Zhang Lizhen was not from a wealthy family, but she loved music and was willing to spend time learning instruments. However, she never had the opportunity for formal training. The men willing to teach her guitar were far more interested in her body than her talent. Huang Jianzun was one of the few men who made her feel respected and equal; he never encouraged Zhang Lizhen to change her profession, and during their encounters, he always seemed eager and enjoyed himself, often giving her extra tips, evidencing a sincerity with money far beyond those moralistic clients. If she hadn’t been foolishly swayed to sign a long-term contract and move to Huang Jianzun’s residence, Zhang Lizhen might have saved enough money to learn the piano.
