Chapter 720: Chapter 663: Visiting

Zhengguang Sub-bureau.

Criminal Police Brigade.

People were coming and going in the office of Jiang Yuan’s Accumulated Case Team.

At the center of the human stream sat Mu Zhiyang, perched in his chair.

In front of Mu Zhiyang was an 80-inch LCD monitor, wheeled in on a stand, now looping footage of Mu Zhiyang’s suave action of throwing his cell phone.

The picture was slightly blurred because it was recorded by a colleague’s body-worn camera. Speaking of which, the quality of police officers from the Beijing Bureau was high; upon seeing the suspect turn to flee, they immediately started recording with their body-worn cameras, unlike the Criminal Police Mu Zhiyang from Ningtai County, who first instinct was to throw his cell phone at the person.

But the one who received a third-class merit was Mu Zhiyang.

The police world is just like this, seemingly premised on procedural justice, yet in reality it’s victors taking all.

Mu Zhiyang pursed his lips to avoid showing his self-satisfied teeth and kept explaining to the newly arrived officers, "I was a bit stunned at that moment, I just wanted to give him a scare, never thought I’d throw it with such precision."

The officers walking by, witnessing his smug expression, shook their heads and sighed.

"Even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes." The ones who envied him the most were the youngsters who had only been in the police force for a few years; to them, a third-class merit was quite tempting.

Liu Cheng, who was nearby and heard this, glanced at them but didn’t say a word. He admired Jiang Yuan greatly, having followed him from Ningtai all the way to Beijing, witnessing the solution of multiple cases was nothing sort of being utterly impressed, as for Mu Zhiyang...

Well, saying he stumbled upon luck was quite an apt description.

There were over a hundred officers sent to inquire in Fang Xia Village, and it so happened that Mu Zhiyang was assigned to Xia Liucheng, and coincidentally, Xia Liucheng decided to run. That’s how Mu Zhiyang had his opportunity to become a human grenade-thrower.

If only that suspect had been a tad smarter, calm and collected enough to chat with Mu Zhiyang and the others, although he would probably still be captured eventually, he wouldn’t have ended up in Mu Zhiyang’s hands.

Maybe the one that ended up getting the merit could have been the officer in charge of examining the financial situation of the villagers of Fang Xia, or possibly the officer who was taking statements from other villagers and found a clue... However, none of these matter now; what’s important is that Mu Zhiyang decisively made his move, not only capturing the criminal suspect Xia Liucheng but also doing it without causing substantial harm. He also saved the Zhengguang Bureau hundreds of thousands in funds with such a method.

Having more than one hundred detectives traveling out of town for just a few weeks would have left the Zhengguang Bureau bankrupt. For a small county like Longli, three days would have been enough.

"Captain Jiang, congratulations. You’ve cracked another big case," Liu Cheng approached and offered his congratulations to the captain.

"Was the murder weapon found?" Jiang Yuan had been enjoying the spectacle, but upon hearing Liu Cheng’s remark, he immediately shifted his attention.

The victim Xia Liucheng had already confessed on the road and made a formal statement at the police station, but mere confessions were certainly not solid enough, the murder weapon was of utmost importance.

Liu Cheng nodded, saying, "It’s a wood chopping axe. He first hid it in a flower pot at the Xia’s, covered it with soil. Later, when he thought the coast was clear, he retrieved it in the middle of the night and buried it in the orchard of the neighboring house. It has been recovered."

Jiang Yuan frowned slightly.

Liu Cheng sighed, "Yeah, that is indeed a problem. During the initial crime scene investigation, that flowerpot should have been inspected."

Jiang Yuan shook his head; dwelling on these issues now was pointless. No matter how stringent the entry assessments, there would always be those who deviate from their intended path, achieving flabbergasting feats.

Wang Chuanxing, on the other hand, chuckled, "If we’re counting that, then our task is about forty percent complete."

Tang Jia gave him a fierce look, "One of the victims was a child not even 10 years old!"

"We avenged him, we brought justice, what more do they want!" Wang Chuanxing was the rational type, or rather, his emotions were nowhere as rich as Tang Jia’s, and having not seen the actual scene, only photographs, it was hard for a veteran detective like him to feel deeply empathetic.

In Tang Jia’s mind, however, the image of the child lying facedown on the bed kept surfacing. She has been through many cases, but despite saying so, the death of a young child and the horrific nature of the annihilation left a significant impact on her. She couldn’t help but glare at Wang Chuanxing and said, "Good actions are rewarded. You should at least respect the deceased."

Wang Chuanxing was unconvinced and retorted, "His own relative slaughtered his family and then went on to happily squander all the money they’d saved over decades. I worked on the case, losing sleep over several nights, and in a way, avenged him. Just because I laughed, I should face retribution? Your theory doesn’t make sense."

Tang Jia was momentarily at a loss for words. Though she could argue that "no wicked deed should be considered too small," police officers don’t believe in that. If there were no degree to evil, what would be the purpose of sentencing.

Liu Cheng didn’t dare to watch the Ningtai people quarrel and hurriedly asked, "Captain Jiang, which case are you planning to take on next?"

He guessed Jiang Yuan must have a list of prepared cases; it was unlikely that he would review so many cases and files just to select one.

Jiang Yuan, however, smiled and said, "I’m not tired, but my team members have been fighting continuously for such a long time. They need to rest for a few days before taking on another case."

"That’s good, resting for a bit is great," Liu Cheng said half-heartedly. Speaking of continuous operation, their Criminal Police Brigade had been fighting day in and day out, especially in the investigation of the recent annihilation case. Although it was resolved quickly, nearly a hundred people were involved in intense, short-term travel.

However, the visiting forces had performed well and naturally had better conditions; Liu Cheng couldn’t compare his treatment with that of Jiang Yuan’s Cold Case Team.

So, after touring Mu Zhiyang, the members of Jiang Yuan’s Cold Case Team went their separate ways to rest.

As for whether they were going to catch up on sleep, visit tourist attractions, or try all the snacks Beijing had to offer, that was up to individual choice.

...

Meanwhile, the team led by Cui Qishan also made new discoveries.

The murderer’s account and mobile phone were difficult to trace, but the victim’s mobile phone information was still traceable.

Although the victim’s mobile phone had been turned off half a day after landing, Cui Qishan and his team still managed to find a tech expert who, by retracing base station information and using big data, identified a fellow traveler’s mobile phone.

Having reached this step, Cui Qishan thought victory was within grasp for the case.

Victory does not differentiate between high and low.

What Cui Qishan didn’t anticipate, however, was that the last known location of the newly identified suspect, right before the mobile phone was turned off, was in a wasteland.

"Call in the canine unit for help," Cui Qishan said, looking at the wasteland with a hint of nervousness.

Two police dogs were swiftly brought to the scene. After sniffing around for a short while, they began barking excitedly.

"A body!" The handler dug on the spot and quickly uncovered a piece of bleached femur.

Dig further, and there’s more.

Keep digging, and there’s still more!

The handler suddenly froze and asked, "How many femurs can one person have?"

Everyone looked on as if they were gazing at an imbecile, their eyes fixed on the handler, until he lifted three femurs.
