Chapter 703: Chapter 646 Ula Ula (First update in batch)
Zhengguang District Branch Bureau.
Jiang Yuan followed Liu Cheng, and from the moment he entered, he received countless curious gazes.
He was tall with an extraordinary bearing, a very obvious characteristic. Accompanied by Liu Cheng, almost everyone, both inside and outside the division, within and outside the organization, recognized him.
Ningtai Jiangyuan, an imposing figure.
This phrase, spread by Liu Cheng, was the talk of the Zhengguang Bureau internally.
No one doubted anything. In the vast land of China, with its spirited people and endless emergence of geniuses, the people of Beijing, who were well-informed and had seen it all, were overwhelmed by the sheer number of gifted young talents and had no time to be astounded.
However, when a genius arrived at their division, it was natural to secretly gauge their "purity," much like people tirelessly comparing the net worth of the magnates listed on the Forbes list—Special Jun is comparable to Ci Qing, but Ci Jun is indeed wealthier.
People looked at each other through the windows, watching Jiang Yuan and discussing amongst themselves:
"Solving a case isn’t something you can accumulate experience in; even Sherlock Holmes, upon facing such a headless case, would probably be left spinning in circles."
"Without sufficient evidence, even Conan would have to bow his head and pretend to be a primary school student."
"Never mind the evidence and all that, there aren’t even any clues. Ningtai Jiangyuan... probably just came to take a look. The population density and mobility in Beijing are more than what their whole county can manage."
"It’s not that bad, maybe he has some unique insights."
...
Meeting room.
Liu Cheng’s immediate superior, the captain of the criminal police squad, Tao Lu, had come early as well to see what Jiang Yuan had to say.
In essence, the mandate to solve homicide cases differed slightly between a county city and the Beijing Division. To put it simply, the incidence rate of homicides in bigger cities was higher, and there were times when cases just couldn’t be solved, which the higher-ups were more tolerant of. In county cities with lower homicide incidence rates, if you couldn’t solve the case, the higher-ups would not indulge your failures.
Of course, for those responsible for operations, like the captain of the criminal police squad Liu Cheng, or the subdivision leader Tao Lu, failing to solve a homicide case was always distressing. If criminal investigation were considered project-based, then this would be equivalent to the failure to complete the biggest project.
Tao Lu looked Jiang Yuan up and down, thinking that he looked even younger than the interns under his command.
Interns at the Beijing Division, many of whom had Master’s degrees by the time they joined, really tended to be older.
However, Tao Lu was patient. He just sat calmly, drinking tea, prepared to listen attentively to Jiang Yuan’s investigative thought process.
At the conference table, the other criminal police squad captains who had come along shared similar thoughts.
Then, Jiang Yuan opened his mouth and said:
"Legal Botany..."
"Tool mark examination..."
"Ulla lalla lalla..."
"Forensic Material Evidence..."
The sensation Tao Lu had was that of his brain heating up, as if knowledge had knocked on his door, a wild donkey had plowed his field, a technician had broken his abstinence, a key had been inserted into the lock...
Jiang Yuan spoken non-stop for a quarter of an hour, and with that, it seemed he had analyzed the case thoroughly.
When Jiang Yuan paused, the meeting room, which was supposed to continue with the discussion, fell silent.
Everyone was busy trying to expand their thinking, and their mouths were temporarily out of service.
Jiang Yuan picked up his teacup and took a sip of water. It was a common tea leaf, but in the office, it should be considered good tea. It tasted smooth without any bitterness and had a slight hint of sweetness. Most importantly, it wasn’t jasmine tea.
It took a while before Tao Lu snapped out of it and signaled with his eyes, prompting his subordinates to speak.
The captain of the third team next door, a squint-eyed fellow, coughed twice and said, "Doctor Jiang’s plan is mainly technical, and as for... I don’t really understand technology, can this thing you call Legal Botany really identify the exact location?"
Jiang Yuan, who was out of the office, was someone who always had at least a third of emotional intelligence on him. Now, without touching on any cause and effect, he said, "I work in Legal Botany mainly in the lab. I’ve brought my team with me and the equipment is very simple. It’s the same whether we do it here or if I take it back to work on. You can continue with your other investigative directions without any delay."
The pollen and spores on the clothes were just as described, and although Jiang Yuan had not yet seen them, as he mentioned, the other actions of the local detective squad would not affect the evidence’s performance. If that was the case, they were essentially two parallel lines.
Jiang Yuan simply offered a new investigative direction, and it had an even greater chance and potential for completion.
If it were a game, Jiang Yuan’s approach would be akin to adding an item rather than replacing one, at the very least an enchantment effect.
For those in leadership, there was nothing not to like about the way Jiang Yuan worked.
Whether the actual effects would be good was still unclear, but the theoretical effectiveness had really been greatly enhanced.
Tao Lu, the head of the detachment, immediately said, "We fully support whatever technical conditions and equipment Doctor Jiang needs. As for the specific experimental plan and its execution, that will be handled by Doctor Jiang... How should we assist on our end?"
"Let’s first see the conclusions of Legal Botany," Jiang Yuan added, "Through Legal Botany, we can determine the relationships between the location and the individuals involved."
"Well... okay, having a range is still good," Tao Lu thought. Even if you could establish relationships between locations and individuals, with so many varieties of flowers and Beijing being so vast, it was still like looking for a needle in a haystack.
He still didn’t grasp the significance of the pollen profile.
Jiang Yuan couldn’t possibly educate him on the spot, so he just smiled politely, like a brooding hen doting over a preserved egg. Huang Qiangmin had said that the Beijing Bureau was a wealthy organization; just the budget of the Zhengguang District Branch Bureau alone was 2.2 billion a year, not to mention their accumulated fixed assets and intellectual property over the years.
One could say that for such a large organization of nearly ten thousand people, even a slight leak of funds would be enough for Ningtai County Bureau to live off for a lifetime. Moreover, their accumulated cold cases would only increase, making them a prime... partner for cooperation.
Tao Lu didn’t even understand Jiang Yuan’s expression and forced a smile, saying, "All right. I trust the work on Doctor Jiang’s end; let’s have the teams report in turn, and also let Doctor Jiang get up to speed on the latest case developments."
Actually, there wasn’t much to get up to speed on. Although Tao Lu had easily dispatched a team of over a hundred people, which was more than the entire staff of Ningtai County Criminal Police Detachment, in such a large city, to make a breakthrough with just two bloodied garments was truly difficult.
The officers from the various teams explained their search efforts. Theoretically, although no leads or correct answers were found, they at least eliminated some possibilities.
Jiang Yuan took brief notes and, after the meeting, followed Liu Cheng to the laboratory.
On the way, Liu Cheng seemed a bit embarrassed and said, "Actually, it’s almost time for lunch. We could eat first and then take our time to get familiar with the equipment here."
"Legal Botany doesn’t require any special equipment, just a suitable microscope would do," Jiang Yuan paused and then added, "Collecting pollen requires full concentration, and if the lab conditions are good, I’d rather not go out for lunch."
Liu Cheng quickly said, "You don’t have to work that hard."
Jiang Yuan waved his hand, indicating that Legal Botany was inherently hard work. However, demonstrating it to the colleagues in Zhengguang District Branch Bureau was a good idea, especially since it was an organization with a 2.2 billion budget; they deserved respect.
Forensic Laboratory.
Under the incandescent lights, three rows of tables were parallel, with seven or eight groups of tall cabinets behind them.
Although the arrangement was different and the size larger, overall, the forensic laboratory of the Beijing Bureau was not much different from Ningtai County’s.
The labs located inside the Bureau were not for conducting autopsies; the main work involved examining samples under a microscope.
In fact, in most cases during the investigation process, forensics would often need to be involved multiple times, mainly to inspect specimens. The second or even third autopsies that victims’ families often request have a very low occurrence rate.
Because of the destructive nature of a forensic autopsy, the most valuable evidence should theoretically have been collected during the first autopsy, such as parts of internal organs and the brain, which can be sliced, immersed in paraffin, and then used for making slides with a microtome for preservation.
Thus, at this moment in the forensic lab, those cabinets that could hold twenty or thirty sets of clothing hangers were mostly filled with tissue samples.
When the special case team wanted to revisit an old case, they would find samples in these cabinets to re-examine.
From a scientific standpoint, this method is more effective and less costly than preserving bodies.
However, for the current case, with no bodies, there were no tissue slides; what Jiang Yuan needed was just a microscope, the evidence, and plenty of time.
