Chapter 699: Chapter 642: Closing In
Hearing the shouting outside, Shang Geyong was the first to get excited.
His body was bound from head to toe like a maggot. Using the words from old storytelling scripts, being tied up this tightly for too long, a person wouldn’t die but would certainly end up crippled.
Shang Geyong strenuously wriggled his body, trying to bounce a couple of times to make some noise, a skill he had practiced for days.
Chen Wanjia, however, calmly got up, casually picked up his hammer, weighed it in his hand, and looked at Shang Geyong.
A cold sweat poured down from his head in an instant.
Shang Geyong couldn’t help thinking, wasn’t this how he had ended up in this mess?
Alone and facing Chen Wanjia without so much as a weapon in his hand, and without a strategy in mind, he had been quickly subdued by Chen Wanjia and pinned to the ground. Shang Geyong could still recall the iron-like grip of Chen Wanjia’s hands, a strength he had never felt amid the countless pleasantries exchanged during his social mingling.
An electric meter reader wouldn’t likely possess much strength, and most importantly, when had the average city dweller ever thought about engaging in hand-to-hand combat?
No one was prepared to suddenly enter a gladiatorial arena.
But Chen Wanjia alone was like a wild beast, watching the door frame intently.
Thump thump thump.
The person outside continued knocking and said, "Would you mind opening the door? We’ve heard noises already. If you don’t come out tomorrow, we have to finish this today. Please, open the door."
Chen Wanjia placed the hammer beside the back of the door, within easy reach, then turned around to push Shang Geyong under the bed and whispered, "If you make a sound, I’ll grab whoever’s outside and have them help me bury you."
Fear filled Shang Geyong’s eyes as he nodded vigorously.
Chen Wanjia stood up, satisfied.
The room was small, with the bed on the side of the door. Shang Geyong’s feet faced the door, and his head was towards the window. He tried hard to tilt his head towards the side of the bed, watching Chen Wanjia’s feet move towards the door.
As the door opened, Chen Wanjia braced his foot against it, seemingly ready to close it at any moment, extremely cautious.
Shang Geyong perked up his ears, straining to listen, trying to catch a glimmer of hope.
Thud.
A dull sound rang out and Shang Geyong’s vision blurred, only to see Chen Wanjia’s face appear in front of his own.
Shang Geyong was startled, and then he realized that Chen Wanjia had been knocked down.
Shang Geyong and Chen Wanjia locked eyes, with Shang Geyong showing panic, while Chen Wanjia remained calm as ever.
"Police!"
Only then did a roar fill the room.
Shang Geyong was stunned, and then he started to jump up with all his might.
Jumping and jumping, a stream of tears flowed down Shang Geyong’s face.
On Chen Wanjia’s face, however, a mocking smile emerged, and he mouthed a familiar shape to Shang Geyong: Swindler!
...
When Wang Chuanxing dragged Shang Geyong out from under the bed, his expression was one of utter astonishment. In a special task force of over a hundred people, including Jiang Yuan, no one had anticipated that Shang Geyong would still be alive.
Although he looked like a dumpling, bound up in such a way, he was still alive, and that was what mattered!
Wang Chuanxing then looked at Chen Wanjia, who was pinned to the ground, and was once again surprised by his calmness and composure.
"What’s your name?" The one on top of Chen Wanjia was Du Zhansheng, a newly graduated officer from the Changyang City Criminal Police Detachment, who came from a Kung Fu Family. He was of championship level in Sanshou martial arts while still in school, and had been specially positioned at the front today for a swift victory.
Chen Wanjia’s photo and sketches had long been distributed, and upon seeing his face, Du Zhansheng was sure he had found the right man. What remained was simply carrying out the tasks planned out for them.
Chen Wanjia was pinned beneath him, sneering, he said, "I am Chen Wanjia."
"Hmm," Wang Chuanxing checked against the photo again, and several people together lifted the handcuffed Chen Wanjia to his feet.
Shang Geyong, who was nearby, was also pulled aside, and his ropes were slowly untied.
Wang Chuanxing led his team to carefully search both sides before taking out his mobile phone to report the capture.
The arrest site here was very important. For future prosecution, court hearings, as well as appeals and death penalty reviews, the photos and physical evidence from this moment would be scrutinized countless times.
Death row inmates generally undergo a second trial, not to overturn the case, but in most instances, they merely use this process to live a few more months.
...
Changyang City.
Upon receiving the call that the capture was successful, Jiang Yuan and the others let out a collective cheer.
Manhunts indeed require a bit of luck, which is why even the most meticulous manhunt can return empty-handed, and even the most far-fetched needle in a haystack can turn out to be a tremendous success.
Even as criminal police, sometimes one can only trust that fate will make the best arrangement, allowing the deceased to rest in peace and the devils to be punished.
"The search for the bodies must continue," Qian Tongyi began to organize the work, saying, "I’ve heard that the killer was quite calm after being caught. I doubt he will confess to his previous deeds properly, so we should confirm as many cases as we can for now. At worst, confirming one more body now is like solving an additional cold case, right?"
Everyone nodded in agreement.
Homicide cold cases or current homicide cases are accounted for by the number of victims, so a case with multiple deaths is counted as that many cases, and subsequent reports and briefings are calculated in the same manner.
From this perspective, solving a case with four deaths is a bit easier than solving four separate cases of single deaths.
Jiang Yuan didn’t need to worry about that. Being a guest officer, he had already exceeded the expectations of the mission.
Qian Tongyi dispatched a series of personnel and then came over to talk to Jiang Yuan, "Shang Geyong was lucky this time, he’s been sent to the hospital. He suffered quite a shock psychologically, but physically, he’s mostly fine."
"Did Chen Wanjia keep him just to look for the gold?" Jiang Yuan felt that the reason for keeping Shang Geyong didn’t seem entirely sufficient.
Qian Tongyi shook his head slightly, "As far as we know, Chen Wanjia probably had him do some dirty work."
"Hmm?"
"Like helping with disemboweling and such. Chen Wanjia found it disgusting, so he had Shang Geyong handle it."
The people around were stunned, "He finds it disgusting, he could just not kill people instead!"
"This month, Chen Wanjia changed locations twice, ending up in Maguan Post, working day by day on wall construction. When wages were withheld, he would just hammer them to death. One foreman at Maguan Post has already died, and if it weren’t for our arrival, another would have perished. He had already prepared lime and such."
"Is this guy begging to be caught?"
"After killing so many, he must not have been able to hold back," said Qian Tongyi, who, not being a psychologist, felt not the slightest sympathy for such a psychopath caused by some psychological problems.
There are many choices for someone with psychological issues. Let alone that killing is not the way to solve problems, even if it was, it shouldn’t be up to these individuals to resolve their issues by murdering others.
Jiang Yuan said, "So that means we’ve found 5 bodies so far."
"Right. According to Shang Geyong, Chen Wanjia killed as needed, like butchering chickens, only considering his own plans without regard for others," Qian Tongyi mainly obtained information from Shang Geyong, while Chen Wanjia’s interrogation would likely need to be handled by an expert.
In the following period, the people of Changyang City would probably alter their perception of the television walls.
"Send the new body over quickly, after I’ve seen it, I need to go home and rest. The sight of the bodies from this case also makes me uncomfortable," Jiang Yuan urged lightly.
As a forensic doctor, he was supposed to be indifferent to things like mummies, but Chen Wanjia’s approach wasn’t a pure mummification method, rather a distorted one, which Jiang Yuan found even more horrifying from his professional standpoint.
Chen Wanjia’s handling of bodies exhibited a certain nonchalant proficiency, especially noticeable in the knife marks and the patience with which he applied lime. Such details filled Jiang Yuan with an even greater sense of unease.
