Chapter 667: Chapter 611 The Eve Before Catastrophe

Director Tan Jing also looked over the case files but did so casually.

Not to mention these were cases he had handled before, speaking of cracking them, it wasn’t that straightforward. If the cases could be solved with a wave of his hand, he wouldn’t have left them here in the first place.

As for why these cases remained unsolved, the difficulty was partly to blame, as was the lack of resources. But both these issues were essentially unsolvable. At least up to now, there had been no fundamental change in either respect for Director Tan and his Zoumadao Police Station.

Therefore, Director Tan’s attention was more on Jiang Yuan.

It was like a poor student watching a top student do their homework. There was no point in trying it themselves; it was better to wait until the top student finished and then copy directly.

"Captain Tan, would you like to pick out a couple of cases?" After looking over several cases and finding them indistinguishable, Jiang Yuan turned to ask the host directly.

Some cases couldn’t be evaluated solely based on what was in their files, perhaps Tan Jing had some ideas.

Once Jiang Yuan asked, Tan Jing perked up a bit, thought for a moment, and said, "Why not start with this oil theft case, number 403? Our evidence collection is more comprehensive in this case."

Wang Chuanxing, who was nearby, quickly located the corresponding files and pulled up additional photos and videos on the computer.

Jiang Yuan read through them one by one, while others looked at files or examined reports.

After a while, seeing that Jiang Yuan remained silent, the others started discussing among themselves.

Someone like Pang Jidong, who usually worked in major cases in Luo Jin City, could simultaneously handle three or four cases like this oil theft through his subordinates in the criminal police unit.

Sitting in the station’s conference room, when the others saw Jiang Yuan keeping silent, they simply did as they pleased.

It wasn’t long before Pang Jidong organized several interrogation records and said, "I noticed that there are a few names that keep appearing frequently. I’ve extracted some of them..."

Everyone looked and saw on the paper: "Feizi told me", "Dunzi came looking for me", "Ran into Feizi"...

The records were full of very colloquial content. A police officer from the station read through them and commented, "This Feizi is a former offender with a history of diesel fuel theft. I’ve arrested him once..."

Pang Jidong nodded and said, "He often appears in the statements of various suspects. He’s definitely an active participant and should be closely watched."

So, Captain Tan stood up, went over to Pang Jidong, reviewed the materials he had organized, and said, "Looking at this, there’s indeed a possibility he’s involved in the crimes. Shall we bring him in for questioning?"

"I suggest we do some surveillance and stakeout first. It would be best if we can find evidence before making a move," Pang Jidong said cautiously.

Director Tan seemed slightly troubled; surveillance was not an issue, but trailing was not something they often did.

Nowadays, police investigation often spent half the time at the desk. Given the large area of Zoumadao’s jurisdiction and its location at the outskirts of the city, most cases were referred to the detective unit, and they were not particularly adept at solving crimes themselves.

"Captain Jiang, what do you think?" Tan Jing turned to Jiang Yuan. He was more willing to listen to Jiang Yuan. Pang Jidong may have higher rank insignia on his shoulders, but he had no authority over a station in a neighboring province.

Jiang Yuan snapped out of his reverie, thought for a moment, and knew where Tan Jing’s difficulty lay. He then suggested, "Why don’t we have Captain Liu take care of the surveillance and stakeout?"

"It’s doable," Liu Wenkai agreed, largely because of Jiang Yuan’s presence.

Tan Jing also breathed a sigh of relief.

Surveillance and stakeout were not easy jobs, the kind that were both exhausting and grueling. Imagine a woman meeting someone for a private encounter, we wouldn’t know if she was tired and just wanted to sleep, or if she wanted to exhaust herself with someone else. You can neither rush in furiously nor turn around and leave; instead, you sit in your car, watching the hotel entrance, hoping to catch the moment the two come out.

This could take 20 minutes or even a day and a night. During the wait, it’s not practical to leave, nor is there room to stretch out, only becoming more and more tired and uncomfortable...

Liu Wenkai’s willingness to agree was the best outcome, at least Tan Jing felt he couldn’t have managed it himself.

"I’ll study this evidence a bit more; you go ahead with the case." Jiang Yuan seemed inspired by the case files, and decided to delegate the task at hand.

Director Tan agreed, though he didn’t understand the reason.

After heading out, a doubtful Director Tan asked Wang Chuanxing, "Is Captain Jiang unhappy about something?"

"No, Captain Jiang probably thought of something big he wants to tackle," responded Wang Chuanxing naturally.

Pang Jidong also said, "It was the same in Luo Jin. Captain Jiang spent a long time studying plants and pollen before he made his move..."

"Oh, that’s good then," Captain Tan responded, although he still felt somewhat uneasy. If it were a single case, he would have no problem with Jiang Yuan’s approach, but for a series of cases, could there really be any commonality? It’s not like they were all committed by one person or one group.

Despite his thoughts, with over twenty members of Jiang Yuan’s Cold Case Squad and Squad Two’s Liu Wenkai leading a dozen or so people, Zoumadao Police Station was stronger than ever before. Director Tan, a bit embarrassed, thought that with such forces, they might not need Jiang Yuan’s involvement after all.

Or rather, even with Jiang Yuan joining, it might not make the situation any better.

The fighting power of Zoumadao Police Station seemed to have reached its maximum that day.

That day, Liu Wenkai dispatched four officers in two cars, along with eight bottles of Pocari Sweat, to surveil the residences of "Feizi" and "Dunzi".
