Chapter 627: Chapter 571: A Turn of Events

"All present, check your equipment."

In the underground parking garage, after the elevator was jammed, Wu Junhao started to organize the team.

Changyang City had also dispatched four criminal police officers, a testament to the reputation of Ningtai Jiang Yuan; otherwise, in most cases, one or two young police officers would suffice to serve as liaisons.

There’s no need to trouble two masters for one task; Wu Junhao had brought so many people, and even though the arrestee was a suspect of a serial murder case, given the number of years that had passed and confronting the informed with the ignorant, there was no necessity to dispatch two separate teams that didn’t share command for the arrest.

"Stab-proof vests, shields, make sure you check everything. The instructor brought a gun, right?" Wu Junhao asked again.

The instructor of the first squad nodded, pulled out his gun, and checked it again with a click-clack.

"The gun is a precaution; you are not allowed to shoot unless absolutely necessary," Wu Junhao specifically reminded them.

He was afraid that the suspect might end up dead.

The case was too significant, and what’s more, it had been piled up for too long; if there were no confession, the difficulty of concluding the case would be considerable.

Wu Junhao was worried that his men were too nervous and might kill the person accidentally, which would be a complete loss.

"I will now assign tasks. Let’s synchronize our watches; it’s currently 3:22 a.m., we will commence the arrest at 3:30 a.m. Old Wang, Xiao Liu, Sanxin... follow me later, Old Wang will be responsible for the battering ram..." Wu Junhao started to walk around the team members, giving orders as he went.

The standard battering ram, often seen in American TV shows, is a black cylinder as thick as a calf’s leg. It comes with its own acceleration, and except for specially reinforced doors, the lock mechanisms of all the commercial security doors you usually see cannot withstand one hit from a battering ram.

If the lock is smashed, the door will be broken open naturally. And for the specially reinforced security doors, there are also door-breaching tools like wrenches, pliers, power drills, saws, and even frame-expanders at their disposal. Wu Junhao’s Bald Strike Team had practiced with these pieces of equipment, and this time they also brought electric saws and breach pincers, focusing on an effective pushing result.

However, based on Wu Junhao’s earlier observations, the security door of Wang Shiji’s home was quite ordinary and likely wouldn’t require the more complicated equipment.

Thump.

A crisp sound, and the security door on the 17th floor was breached in an instant, the noise not loud enough to even wake the sleeping suspect.

Wu Junhao entered, taking three steps as if they were two, and stepped directly into Wang Shiji’s bedroom where he grabbed Wang Shiji, who had just woken up.

Wang Shiji’s eyes widened, like a fish that had been scooped out of the water. He moved slightly, then began to struggle violently.

"Police! Stay still." Two officers who entered after him came forward, joining forces to handcuff Wang Shiji.

Only then did another person slowly sit up from the bed—it was Wang Shiji’s wife. She was dressed in pajamas and looked to be in her late forties or fifties. She still seemed dazed with a slightly frightened expression on her face.

"Don’t be afraid, we’re the police." Wu Junhao patted his police badge, straightened Wang Shiji up, and then took him away.

The officers who entered afterward did the necessary note-taking and gave necessary reminders, while also searching Wang Shiji’s home and taking some items away.

Wu Junhao, not minding the others, called a few people to first take Wang Shiji to the underground parking lot, shoved him into the car, and swiftly returned to the Changyang City Bureau with sirens wailing.

Not until Wang Shiji was locked in the interrogation chair did Wu Junhao finally exhale a sigh of relief.

With such a case, there was no possibility of giving Wang Shiji a chance to get his thoughts in order or regroup; the interrogation experts, already prepared, were eagerly anticipating securing this rare opportunity for a commendable achievement.

"Old Wu, impressive!"

When Wu Junhao stepped outside, a criminal police officer working the night shift greeted him.

The criminal police from the provincial capital’s department weren’t typically impressed with police coming from small county cities. But with Jiang Yuan from Ningtai, everyone’s courtesy escalated.

Many criminal police officers from Ningtai County, including Wu Junhao, often followed Jiang Yuan to Changyang to work on cases; gradually, they became acquainted. Furthermore, many of the officers from Jiang Yuan’s Accumulated Case Team were originally from the Changyang City Criminal Police Detachment, signifying a high degree of collaboration.

Wu Junhao smiled and nodded, took out a cigarette and passed it over, and with the snap of a lighter, five men gathered together.

Dawn broke quickly.

Xu Taining, Liu Jinghui, and others also rushed over from Qingbai City.

Now that the criminal suspect was captured, the case was leaning towards clarity. What was most important now, aside from securing evidence, was the interrogation.

If they could get a confession and then have the suspect reenact the crime scene, explaining the methods used, there would be almost no doubt left about the case.

Even if someone really was willing to take the blame, an outsider wouldn’t be able to clarify many specific details of the case.

Xu Taining also had people buy youtiao, soy milk, and jianbing guozi to eat together. It was charged to the public account.

When a case reaches the concluding stage, there is no longer a need to clamp down on the budget so tightly.

As a group of rough men and women without makeup were eating happily, they saw a police officer involved in the interrogation walk out expressionlessly.

"How did it go?" Wu Junhao asked directly.

The officer shook his head and said, "The suspect has an alibi."

"What the hell?" Xu Taining stood up abruptly, "Where did he find an alibi for something 20 years ago?"

"On the day of the incident, the suspect was undergoing surgery at Changyang City’s First People’s Hospital," the officer sighed helplessly, "It was a general anesthesia surgery for gallstones."

"Having surgery..." Xu Taining hesitated for a few seconds, then asked, "Can we check the surgical records?"

"Just made a call, and had someone to check it," the officer spread his hands, "We also suspect that he deliberately created an alibi, but from the medical records, at least the gallstones part is genuine."

The police officers present, upon hearing their conversation, lost their appetites one after another.

Wu Junhao silently took out a pack of Zhonghua cigarettes from Jiang Yuan, distributed them to everyone without a word, and then lit one up and puffed fiercely.

This time, just when there was the most hope, with a snap, the clue was severed again.

"So, there’s a reason why this Wang Shiji didn’t come under the previous special task force’s radar," Liu Jinghui also sounded a bit disappointed, sipping tea and slipping into quiet contemplation.

In the end, it was Xu Taining, with the strongest heart, who finished his cigarette in silence, stood up, and said, "It’s not over yet, even if we’ve reached the end of the road for victim number two, there’s still hope for numbers one and three..."

"The previous task force, they hit dead ends with victims numbers one and three," Liu Jinghui said.

Xu Taining laughed, "It’s best if they didn’t exhaust all options, otherwise, we are the ones who are running out of road."

If Xu’s extensive screening over such a long time yielded no results, several people at the city bureau would truly lose their minds.

No one said a word, continuing on meant starting over, which wasn’t to say they hadn’t faced such things before, but it always brought frustration whenever encountered.

Frustrated people only want to give up.

"Let Jiang Yuan know," Xu Taining, as if back to his normal self, took out his mobile phone.

"Jiang Yuan might already be sleeping," Liu Jinghui remembered just as Xu Taining’s call connected.

After a few seconds, Jiang Yuan’s phone was busy.

Then, Wu Junhao’s phone rang.

Wuuu wuuu wuuu...

Wu Junhao answered quickly, "Captain Jiang?"

"Get your team ready to arrest someone," Jiang Yuan’s command was simple and clear.

"Yes," Wu Junhao replied, then added, "Captain Jiang, Director Xu and Director Liu are right here, Director Xu just tried to call you but couldn’t get through."

"Oh, then put it on speaker," Jiang Yuan said.

Wu Junhao put the call on speaker.

"Jiang Yuan?" Xu Taining asked.

"Yes. Director Xu, from the partial DNA identification results, it seems that the Wang Shiji you’ve caught might have a brother," Jiang Yuan’s tone remained steady as he spoke, "His dandruff was found on the victim Liu Limin’s clothing."

Xu Taining felt like his head was about to explode, "Wang Shiji’s brother? There’s no need for the brother to commit murder, either."

"We don’t know the specifics yet, but the two of them must have been in contact. Bring him in first, to prevent him from running away," Jiang Yuan made the call to ensure they were promptly informed about this development.
