Chapter 603: Chapter 548: Come Out and See the Immortal

p.m.

Two police officers from Malaysia arrived in Luo Jin City.

"Zhong Renlong, Ni Cha." Cui Xiaohu and Li Haochen from the Ministry went to the airport to pick up the people and introduced the two Malaysian police officers to everyone upon their return.

Zhong Renlong was a Dama Chinese, slightly handsome but not tall, with dark skin. He could speak Chinese and also read simplified characters. Ni Cha’s skin was even darker; he only spoke English and required translation through Zhong Renlong.

Jiang Yuan and Pang Jidong were called back to the police station, exchanging smiles. As they had analyzed, if the Malaysians also had a case, they would certainly come very quickly.

The case itself was shrouded in pain, but for solving the case, the Malaysian case would obviously bring new clues, evidence, and ideas.

"Let’s look at the case first." As a foreigner, Zhong Renlong didn’t bother with too many pleasantries.

Neither did Captain Wang and others care to chat much with the foreign police. Their focus remained on cracking the case at hand.

Soon, a police officer brought out some of the files and evidence.

Zhong Renlong sat down, looking through the files while translating for Ni Cha.

Ni Cha didn’t sit but stood next to Zhong Renlong, occasionally asking him a few questions before examining the various photos himself.

Jiang sat next to them and asked Captain Wang, "Captain Wang, what kind of case is it from Malaysia, do we have data?"

"We haven’t talked in detail yet, but it is also a series of serial assault cases, occurring in the capital. They must be under great pressure too," Captain Wang said.

Pang Jidong, standing by, cast a glance at Captain Wang and said in a choppy tone, "Captain Wang, they haven’t even introduced their case to us, and you’ve already handed over the files to them, this is like brownnosing."

"Our foreign friends have come. That’s all for now," Captain Wang coughed twice.

Zhong Renlong heard him but pretended not to understand and continued to review the materials with Ni Cha.

However, they soon discovered that the material they received was very different from traditional case-solving information.

Page after page of lab reports, photos of pollen, classification atlases, pictures of plants from the crime scene...

"Legal Botany?"

Having scanned everything quickly from start to finish, Ni Cha raised his head with difficulty, and the first word that came out was this.

"Exactly, Legal Botany." Cui Xiaohu repeated in English and asked them for the case information from the Malaysian side.

"Just a moment, I’ll get it for you," Ni Cha said, pulling out a USB drive from his pocket, but instead of handing it to Cui Xiaohu, he asked, "Which forensic doctor is the expert in Legal Botany?"

Cui Xiaohu was taken aback, then laughed and pushed Jiang Yuan to the front, saying, "This is our best expert in Forensic Botany."

From his understanding, there were no dedicated Legal Botany experts in the Ministry, so calling Jiang Yuan the best seemed unproblematic.

Ni Cha sized up Jiang and asked in English, "So young?"

Jiang smiled and took the USB drive, then handed it to Cui Xiaohu.

Like the young officers from the provincial department, Cui Xiaohu and others from the Ministry were very proficient in various office software, and quickly read all the data from the USB drive.

It was mainly some photographs, along with a few crime scene evidence photography; there wasn’t much in the way of text documents, mostly consisting of tables.

Jiang sat down and slowly looked through the data on a laptop, while Pang Jidong and the others stood behind him, following along.

Seeing the state they formed spontaneously, Ni Cha knew that Jiang was indeed central to solving the case. Recalling the material he just saw, he couldn’t help but say in English, "I didn’t know you use Forensic Botany to solve cases, otherwise I would have brought some relevant material over. Hold on, I will call back and ask them to prepare, see if they can collect anything useful."

Ni Cha spoke, and Zhong Renlong translated on the spot. As soon as the translation was over, Ni Cha took out his phone to make a call, while Zhong Renlong seemed a bit surprised and said, "Ni Cha is quite proud... But your method of solving the case is indeed very surprising, especially Officer Jiang’s..."

Cui Xiaohu and others felt honored and couldn’t help but laugh.

Jiang looked at the photos in front of him without the mood to joke with them.

Compared to the domestic cases, the scenes of the serial assault cases in Malaysia were even more brutal. In one case, the victim was killed at the scene, then dragged onto a car and redeposited at the starting point.

From the photos, the victim was a local high school girl, lying face down in a clearing of a small grove, with drag marks on the ground that were consistent with the direction of her head and feet. Her upper clothing remained intact, while her pants had been pulled down to her knees...

Authorities from Dama included the local forensic doctor’s report, but Jiang Yuan only glanced at it; he could make a lot of judgments just by looking at the photos:

There were scattered petechial hemorrhages on the conjunctiva of the eyelids, small patches of bleeding on the upper lip’s mucous membrane... There were small, patchy areas of epidermal peeling around the mouth and nose, submucosal hemorrhaging in the oral cavity... Soil was adhering to the back and buttocks...

All of the above indicated that the victim’s mouth and nose had been smothered. Jiang Yuan recalled the four domestic cases with similar circumstances, but the force used to smother was not strong, a determination made from the injuries inside the mouth. Additionally, the variation in the number of electric shocks suggested that the assailant felt more secure committing the crime within Luo Jin City, likely because he was more familiar with the surrounding environment.

On the other hand, the assailant’s level of excitement in Dama was probably higher, which might be the reason why he did not immediately commit another crime upon returning to his country, but instead started researching body farms. He likely wanted to experience something more thrilling.

Looking at the photos of the chest examination, multiple electric shock injuries, and gastric reflux material rising and blocking the trachea and bronchi, were the primary causes of death.

In other words, the victim died of asphyxiation.

Jiang Yuan surmised that the murderer must have electrocuted the victim several times during the crime, and from the number of times, it was probably not just to subdue the victim, but more likely in the pursuit of greater excitement.

Following this secondary sexual assault and murder case, there were two more sexual assault cases in Dama, both characterized by the very particular secondary sexual assault and multiple electric shocks, only the total amount and frequency were reduced, not to the point of causing death. Nevertheless, in the latter two sexual assault cases, the victims ultimately lost consciousness and were dragged into vehicles.

This indicated that the perpetrator was very adept at learning and even managed to control his desires to some extent.

This was an act of crime escalation. Jiang Yuan thought of the small-scale "body farm" Bao Wenxing had at his home; he was likely bolder after traveling abroad, with higher demands, and no longer satisfied with releasing the victims. He preferred to kill his victims or act more unrestrainedly, hence trying a new approach at home.

Bao Wenxing was already capable of abducting young women or, in other words, illegally detaining them. If he had the capability to dispose of bodies, he would not only satisfy his perverse desires but also evade capture more easily.

For the same teenage girl, if she simply went missing, the level of concern would be nowhere near that for sexual assault and death.

Ni Cha finished the phone call and, with consent from the Chinese side, faxed some photos and autopsy reports back home, then discussed further with domestic authorities.

After some procedures, Ni Cha turned back to Jiang Yuan, who had been analyzing the files for quite some time, and asked, "Officer Jiang, would it be convenient for you to perform an analysis of our collected evidence using legal botany?"

"It could be done," Jiang Yuan paused, then asked, "Is it necessary? Your goal should be to prove that the cases were committed by the same person, right?"

"Right," Ni Cha replied and then, somewhat confused, asked in English, "Is it not necessary?"

"Hmm, when a murderer kills, he leaves behind a lot of evidence," Jiang said. "I personally believe that we can ascertain it without the involvement of legal botany."

The trouble with legal botany was quite substantial, and it required physical site inspection, which Jiang Yuan was not very keen on doing in Malaysia.

Jiang Yuan opened the notebook by his side, looked at the sequence numbers recorded there, and flipped back to the previously seen photos, saying, "Let’s start with the first item, the time of death of the victim. Since asphyxiation caused by electric shock led to death, your forensic doctor’s estimated time of death was very vague, spanning 6 hours. I believe it can be narrowed down to within an hour..."

As he spoke, Jiang Yuan drew a line in the notebook, at the place where he had jotted down the time of death while viewing the photos: August 5, 9:20 PM - August 5, 10:20 PM (local time).

Ni Cha saw this and couldn’t help but be a little stunned, and somewhat incredulously said, "Is it that accurate?"

Of course, Level 6 is super accurate, and forensic doctors across Malaysia might not be as proficient.

Jiang Yuan confidently nodded and said, "Tracing back from this time, if there are suitable surveillance or eyewitnesses, perhaps evidence can be found."

If no one had died, due to the victims being unconscious, it would be difficult to determine the exact end time of the incident and the location of the crime, making it hard to find the culprit.

But with a dead body, the corpse itself is the strongest lead.

In this respect, Bao Wenxing’s evasion of investigation in the past was a matter of luck. His escalation in crime, on the other hand, has exposed him. Thus, just like in the online world, leveling up in real life carries risks.

Ni Cha was still processing the information.

Jiang Yuan said, "This you can check later on; actually, there are also clues on the victim’s body, especially the fingerprints left on the chest and abdomen area, which actually have a high degree of match..."

Zhong Renlong quickly did the translation, then looked at the photos and, surprised, said, "These fingerprints are very blurry, can they be matched?"

"Yes, just some image processing is needed." Jiang Yuan said as he started demonstrating with the software.

Ni Cha and Zhong Renlong watched with furrowed brows. As they watched, Ni Cha took out his phone and said to Zhong Renlong in Malay, "Can I record a video? Can you repeat the process just now? I want to show it to everyone..."

After translating, Zhong Renlong added, "What Ni Cha means, to put it in a language familiar to Chinese people, is roughly... ’come out and watch the deity at work.’
