Chapter 570: Chapter 517 Wiring
Night.
Yuan Yushan made sure to reply to all the emails of the day and approved all the procedures that needed approval before she stood up, rubbed her neck, and then walked over to the large floor-to-ceiling window to look into the distance.
From her vantage point, she could see parts of the factory compound and the city.
The lights of the factory compound and city at night could not be described as very beautiful, and they were far from comparing to the charm of the Ten Li Foreign Field, but this was the Yuan Family’s territory, the foundation of the Yuan Family’s legacy.
Yuan Yushan let out a regretful sigh. In the end, she hadn’t managed to keep it safe.
She didn’t blame her father for walking a tightrope; if not for his high-wire act, a company like Jianyuan would have been finished long ago. But if one of her three brothers had been reliable, had not fought so fiercely amongst themselves, had not drained Jianyuan’s vitality to death, the company’s exposure could have been delayed, and they might have survived until going public, accomplishing the transformation from carp to dragon.
Her father, Yuan Jiansheng, was also to blame. If he could have remained steadfast for another ten years, spending the time he fooled around with women working, adjusting and balancing the relationships among his children, and finding a suitable successor for Jianyuan, perhaps the company might have survived.
That included the old brothers by her father’s side, the uncles whom Yuan Yushan affectionately addressed in ordinary days — if only they could have restrained themselves a bit, not rushed to drag her father down, they could have persisted longer, and their chances of survival would have been greater.
"It’s all the karma we planted ourselves," Yuan Yushan muttered to herself, taking a few more steps in front of the window as if in thought.
Her floor-to-ceiling window had only a thin curtain pulled across it. From the outside, one could see the silhouette of a graceful figure moving about.
Yuan Yushan’s looks were not particularly stunning, but she managed her figure well. Dressed in a cocktail dress, even standing faceless in front of the window, she could still be praised as a beauty.
In fact, many of Jianyuan Pharmaceutical’s workers would take a look at Yuan Yushan in the evenings and then privately make inappropriate jokes that were not suitable for public discussion.
Yuan Yushan knew yet carried on as usual.
In recent days, Yuan Yushan made it a point to appear in front of the floor-to-ceiling window every day, sometimes even drawing the curtains aside slightly for a clearer view.
Many knew that she was implicitly expressing that the high-level executives were still persevering inside the factory compound.
For the anxious employees of Jianyuan, this was indeed crucial. What most Jianyuan people could not accept the most was losing their jobs. They weren’t afraid of the police either; most were just white-collared and blue-collared workers who had only recently escaped poverty. Working honestly couldn’t be wrong, and even if the police came, what could they do?
Knock knock.
The assistant knocked and entered, whispering, "Madam Yuan, it’s 9 o’clock."
"Mhm," Yuan Yushan turned around and then offered a smile, speaking in a gentle voice, "Xiao Lian, I’m counting on you next."
"Don’t worry, Madam Yuan. I will do my best," Assistant Xiao Lian replied softly.
Yuan Yushan nodded, personally helped adjust Xiao Lian’s pencil skirt, and then reminded her, "In about an hour, just stand by the window for a while. You can walk a few steps if you like, but not too frequently and not at regular intervals, to avoid making it obvious."
"I understand, Madam Yuan."
"Just call me Sister Yuan," Yuan Yushan smiled and added, "Once I’ve met with those people with Dad, this farce at Jianyuan should come to an end. If it really comes to it, we’ll just cut our losses... You should just take care of your own tasks, and don’t worry too much."
This was the story Yuan Yushan fabricated for the little assistant. She transformed the drug trafficking story into one of trafficking controlled medications, shifting the cause from the Criminal Law to the greed of officials and the problem of benefit distribution before the company went public.
But this was compatible with the values of ordinary people. Most importantly, the assistant had a clean personal record. On one hand, she wasn’t afraid of the police, and on the other, she was willing to bet on the senior executives of the corporation. What a great opportunity. Her peers or those who had just graduated would want to bet too, if they could, but probably had no chance.
Yuan Yushan quickly changed clothes in the office’s dressing room and then left the office.
At this moment, she felt a bit envious of the little assistant. After all, some statuses are determined at birth, and she never had the chance to be an ordinary person.
Yuan Yushan took the high-level elevator to the chairman’s office on the top floor.
Her father, Yuan Jiansheng, and her eldest brother, Yuan Yuming, were waiting silently inside.
"Did sister-in-law leave?" Yuan Yushan asked as soon as she entered.
"She’s gone," Yuan Yuming answered with a pale face, looking as if he had used drugs.
Yuan Yushan guessed that Yuan Yuming must have turned to drugs after he was cast aside. At that time, losing his inheritance rights to the corporation must have felt like the end of his life. Of course, he must realize now that life is far from over, and this ending will only be more tragic.
Yuan Jiansheng’s throat moved slightly as he said, "Let’s skip the unnecessary talk. If we can get out, then go your own ways. If not, don’t blame anyone. I’ll stand my final watch."
In the last moments, Yuan Yushan let out a heavy sigh.
After all, he couldn’t keep Jianyuan afloat.
Yuan Yuming looked at his younger sister, then at their father. He could read social cues well enough to hold back his words despite the urge to speak.
Yuan Yushan bent over to hug her father, Yuan Jiansheng, tears streaming down in strings.
"Ah, you girl, you’ve killed all my friends, leaving me alone and friendless, and now you start to cry," said Yuan Jiansheng with a laugh, as he pushed Yuan Yushan away, "Alright, go now. There isn’t much time left."
"Dad, we’re leaving," said Yuan Yuming with a tinge of emotion, pulling his sister along as they quickly left.
Yuan Jiansheng had loyal old friends who volunteered to stay and take care of him. By the next morning, they were to announce a halt in production, then cut off water and electricity to force the workers out of their dormitories and the plant area.
After that, Yuan Jiansheng could set the chemical plant ablaze depending on the situation, destroying most of the evidence.
A fire at the chemical plant is no small matter.
By then, both Jianyuan and Qinghe City would be in disarray, providing the best chance for Yuan Yuming and Yuan Yushan to escape.
Having exited the elevator, they headed straight for the basement, where two groups of Jianyuan gang members were already waiting. They exchanged glances, nodded to each other, and then split up, each going their separate ways.
Each group proceeded to a ventilation shaft, put on miner’s hard hats, and descended one after the other.
Jianyuan started as a chemical company and had no shortage of pipelines and networks after various transformations.
Many years ago, Yuan Jiansheng built escape tunnels on top of the regular production pipelines.
Those tunnels and shafts were designed by old friends from the chemical plant; during construction, the work was distributed among different construction teams who were unaware of the overall plan.
In fact, Yuan Jiansheng prepared not just one escape route for Jianyuan. Having been in illegal business for many years, he had long come to terms with his potential demise.
Yuan Yushan and Yuan Yuming each chose a different path for their escape.
The gang members leading the way were usually only aware of their own route.
Yuan Yushan marched in silence.
They needed to crawl through tunnels to get out of the plant area. It was estimated that this would take about two hours to reach the suburbs, followed by more walking to find transportation.
By the following morning, Yuan Yushan would not only have left Qinghe City but might also have the chance to leave Shannan Province.
The only concern was not having enough cash on hand, but fortunately, she had plenty of cryptocurrency stored in a cold wallet, and had memorized 24 seed words. All she needed was a stable environment to easily withdraw the funds.
"Judging by the time, the first team should be nearly there," the leader of the group whispered as they led the way.
Yuan Yuming’s wife and children were with the first team to exit, partly to scout the way ahead.
They reached another underground cavity where there was more room to maneuver. The whole team stopped to drink water and rest.
Yuan Yushan held her gun with one hand, also slowly regaining her strength.
This was the most dangerous phase, and she knew it well, though there weren’t many options.
