Chapter 539 - 539 496 Enchanting

539: Chapter 496 Enchanting 539: Chapter 496 Enchanting “There really are dozens of people…

huh, this must be over a hundred people,”

Standing in the meeting room of the Criminal Police Brigade, the Deputy Chief of the Narcotics Brigade looked through the list Jiang Yuan had pulled up, exchanging glances with Captain Qian.

With grave seriousness, Captain Qian nodded and said, “On the way here, I exchanged a few words with the family, and it should be correct.

Everything checks out upon verification.”

“All these are matched from the fingerprints we provided?”

“Yes.”

The Deputy Chief let out a sigh, glancing over at Jiang Yuan, who was still busy working, his expression becoming solemn as well.

In this meeting room with more than a dozen people, except for him and Captain Qian, the others, including Jiang Yuan, had no idea where the evidence had come from; they were just processing it.

And the Deputy Chief was very clear that the fingerprints in this stack of names, some were extracted from small packages of drugs, which meant they were either a member of the drug distribution chain or drug users sharing the spoils.

Other fingerprints had been obtained from recently acquired intelligence on suspected high-risk locations, such as the office building of the Huang Li System Factory that Jiang Yuan had just secured, which was a high-risk site.

Since narcotics officers couldn’t enter directly, they designed things that required human touch in nearby parking lots, convenience stores, restaurants, etc., such as installing an extra barrier lift requiring push-button operation, or changing the inner door of public restrooms to require pulling by hand, and so on.

In short, the majority of the provided fingerprints, as long as the person was confirmed, were basically criminals; some would even have to be executed by firing squad.

But to be honest, the Deputy Chief had watched his subordinates bring in the evidence and, at the time of delivery, he really hadn’t expected that what he would receive would be a death notebook.

“Ningtai Jiangyuan, the fierce flames raging.” The Deputy Chief recalled this phrase, suddenly feeling the full force of it.

“What are we going to do?” Captain Qian couldn’t help but be anxious; there were nearly a hundred people here, and it looked like there were criminal suspects numbering in the hundreds.

If they weren’t caught, would these people run away?

Even if they didn’t consider the possibility of leaked information, criminals are inherently mobile.

If it were just one or two, they could move around all they liked; the Narcotics Brigade wouldn’t care about the travel expenses.

But now it was different: managing to track over a hundred criminal suspects was difficult enough, and if ten or twenty percent escaped, that would be ten to twenty individuals, which seemed like a waste to even think about.

Among them were certainly underlings, but substantive drug traffickers in the middle tier were definitely a part of it.

Usually, it was so difficult to catch just one of them, but now, when they were right in front of you, to catch or not to catch?

However, if they were caught, the drug traffickers would certainly have a reactive response.

They weren’t like those penniless hoodlums who could only run to friends or relatives.

Those involved in drug trafficking might flee the country in an instant, and in a few years, they might die abroad, making formal penal prosecution impossible.

Most importantly, these suspects might implicate even more people.

Perhaps, there was indeed a chance of completely uprooting two criminal gangs.

Such an opportunity, even for Narcotics Brigade units at the divisional level, was not easily accomplished.

What Captain Qian could think of, the Deputy Chief could also anticipate.

While he weighed the pros and cons in his mind, the printer beside him chugged, continuing to spit out slips of paper.

“Suddenly, I feel like I’m the belle of a ball,” the Deputy Chief, with his rough-hewn features, suddenly said, startling Captain Qian.

“How did we…

become the belle of a ball?” Captain Qian was somewhat flustered, too old to handle such surprises.

The Deputy Chief explained, “Back in my school days, there was a class belle just like this.

She hadn’t even finished reading one love letter before another was delivered to her.

During a single recess, she could receive a whole pile of them.”

“That belle must have been really pretty,” Captain Qian remarked with envy.

“Mhm,” the Deputy Chief grunted in agreement, “She really was beautiful; later she was tricked into using drugs.

Even in death, she looked better than other corpses.”

“What a pity,” Captain Qian was too old for such stories to affect his emotions much, he simply commented, “This time we can arrest more drug dealers to answer for their crimes.”

“Yeah…

I’ll call the Chief over to have a look, there’s no rush for this one hour,” the Deputy Chief said.

By then, he had made up his mind; Jiang Yuan had only just started fingerprint comparisons and already matched so many drug criminals.

And although there might not be many important figures in the mix yet, this was just the beginning.

There were still so many fingerprints to go through, and even if they couldn’t maintain the current ratio, hitting another 100 out of so many wouldn’t be surprising.

So catching suspects right now would definitely be a case of the loss outweighing the gain.

On the other hand, he also felt he couldn’t bear such a big decision-making risk, this list of nearly a hundred names…

if they were all arrested…

The Deputy Chief felt tempted to clench his fists.

Another hour passed, and the Chief of the Narcotics Brigade finally arrived at the meeting room.

He had apparently been out, evidenced by the sweat on his collar and no place to change his clothes, probably not caring much as he walked in and immediately looked at the list the Deputy Chief was discussing.

The Deputy Chief handed it to him to review.

The Deputy Chief flipped through a few pages and realized that each page represented one person, commenting, “This…

it’s more than just dozens or hundreds of pages.”
