National Forensic Doctor
Chapter 470 - 470 432 Dawn of the Tao

470: Chapter 432 Dawn of the Tao 470: Chapter 432 Dawn of the Tao Longli County Criminal Police Team basement.

Doctor Ye looked at Medical Examiner Zhai’s bloodshot eyes, feeling a bit scared.

As he was moving a basket of bones out, he kindly said, “Medical Examiner Zhai, do you want to rest for a bit?

Work can be done anytime, you don’t have to push yourself so hard.”

“Rest…” Medical Examiner Zhai’s head tilted slightly, a bit sluggishly repeating Doctor Ye’s words, like a broken repeat machine.

After a while, he said, “If I rest…

wouldn’t last night’s all-nighter have been for nothing?”

“You didn’t have to stay up all night yesterday either,” Doctor Ye said with a laugh and sigh.

He thought to himself, “Right now, you’re in a state where you could be cheated out of 10 bucks while getting breakfast, what more can you do?”

Medical Examiner Zhai struggled for a moment, then took another sip from his thermos of goji berry tea, perking up a bit, and said, “Although yesterday I only looked at some superficial stuff, if it’s just about understanding the latest technology, that should be enough.”

Doctor Ye clicked his tongue twice: “You’re pushing yourself too hard.”

“And you, you’re still young, don’t you think about giving it your all?” Medical Examiner Zhai kindly prompted Doctor Ye.

Doctor Ye laughed heartily: “I’m already 46 years old, how many more years can I push?”

Medical Examiner Zhai looked at him coldly: “You can push for 10 more years than I can.”

Doctor Ye was stunned for a moment.

Having been slack for so many years, generally speaking, leaders either didn’t understand forensic technology or were only a few years older than him.

It really was rare for someone to grind his gears like this.

Fortunately, he had been slack for a long enough time.

Offhandedly, he said, “I’m too far from the cutting edge.

Staying up all night is useless.”

“Chasing it for even one day is still good.

I’m also just doing my best,” Medical Examiner Zhai said in a more relaxed tone, then turned to the young forensic doctors who were here for training and said, “You all have more opportunities.

If you’re free recently, take a look at the related materials.

Don’t think that just because Jiang Yuan is in Shannan Province, once you leave the province, wanting to see such cutting-edge technology will actually be harder.”

The young forensic doctors nodded unanimously.

They understood the rationale.

“Learn as much as you can, at least getting to know it is good,” Medical Examiner Zhai was conservative with his words, not wanting to paint too rosy a picture and give these young forensic doctors unwarranted fantasies only to face disappointment later.

“Understood.”

“We will definitely study hard.”

“How long has Captain Jiang been studying it?”

The spirits of the forensic doctors were high.

This is the most common scenario during training sessions.

When faced with something brand new and very advanced, everyone’s interest and enthusiasm are both very high.

On one hand, people inherently like new things.

On the other hand, new technology has boundless prospects, and if those prospects include oneself, then it couldn’t be better.

During the conversation, Jiang Yuan also arrived.

It really wasn’t easy to take a whole body upstairs to the office.

Occasionally, if you carry a skull upstairs and head out with it tucked under your arm, the police officers you meet along the way won’t say anything.

But if you tried to carry up two baskets of a body at once, it would feel quite strange, not to mention, it’s not easy to set up.

It’s better to keep it all in the basement room—after all, the mortuary is too far, and everyone actually doesn’t want to bother going there.

Therefore, dry corpses are more popular among forensic doctors compared to wet ones.

“Shall we get started right away?” Jiang Yuan brought a laptop, a high-performance one, newly gifted by Director Huang from the county, the origin of which was unclear.

Equipped with the same 3DSlicer, setting it on the table and booting up, he placed the halfway-done skull on the table and then said, “The computer upstairs is processing the skull of male number one, so we’ll start with number two here.

Then, you guys decide whether you want to examine the bones or join me in the skull restoration.”

Everyone expressed their eagerness to do the skull restoration.

Medical Examiner Zhai smiled openly, “I reviewed all night yesterday so that I could understand better when it came time to watch.”

Doctor Ye said, “I’m capable of both.”

“Medical Examiner Zhai is really dedicated,” Jiang Yuan praised.

Despite his age, he still maintained a pursuit of technology, just like a sage who is devoted to seeking the truth, which had a similar feeling to hearing the ‘The Great Learning’ in the morning.

However, hearing the truth doesn’t mean one comprehends it.

Jiang Yuan didn’t withhold any secrets and continued, “Number 2 is a bit slower, but it has managed to achieve partial deformation.

This part might need to be handled with more precision, because the final result largely depends on the partial deformation.

Let’s continue with the process.

Everyone can have a look to get a basic feel, and if anyone wants to review from the beginning later, we can find another case for that.”

In the several key steps of craniofacial reconstruction, from 3D modeling, to the marking of feature points, to the overall deformation and local deformation, this whole process starts with creating an identical skull model on the computer.

Marking feature points is like attaching soft tissue to the skull.

Overall deformation is the adjustment of organ positions and proportions, such as where the nose is, how high the brow bone is, and what the mouth looks like.

Up to this point, it can be understood that these are an individual’s unchangeable physiological characteristics.

Local deformation determines the specific shape and details of features like the nose and mouth, such as the size and elevation of the nose, the size and thickness of the lips, and so on.

This step is actually akin to what a plastic surgeon can do.

Theoretically, if a body had undergone plastic surgery before death, you could still roughly discern some of these changes depending on the extent.

To perfectly recreate the deceased’s appearance during the local deformation process is as complex as guessing what they had altered themselves to look like, with many details to consider.

“There are some key data to pay attention to within this.

For instance, the distance between the glabella point and the external canthus point of the to-be-reconstructed skull model, the distance between the two external canthus points, and so on…” Jiang Yuan said as he began to input some data.

Medical Examiner Zhai nodded slightly.

After all, he had a foundation, including in Skull Restoration Skill.

His main lack was in those preliminary skills, but his knowledge in Forensic Anthropology was still very fluent.

Ye also nodded along.

He didn’t strive to understand, focusing more on the atmosphere.

The young forensic doctors following him nodded solemnly.

Within Jiang Yuan’s words, there was knowledge of Forensic Anthropology, but also a requirement for related knowledge in mathematics and computer science.

Although it was difficult, now at the beginning, everyone still watched with bated breath and tried their best to digest it.

Seeing this, Jiang Yuan continued to speak.

His main task was still to solve cases, or to say, to truly restore these two skulls.

So, after giving some consideration to the others, he started his usual work.

While pulling up information on the screen, Jiang Yuan said, “As we all know, there are mainly two methods used to realize the local deformation of reference facial models: one is the scattered data interpolation method and the other is the Free-Form Deformation (FFD) technique.

I’m planning to use the first method now, using the radial basis function interpolation method.

Commonly used radial basis functions include the Gauss function, Hardy’s multiquadrics, and thin-plate splines with linear terms…”

While speaking, Jiang Yuan began to assign values to these functions.

The traditional manual Skull Restoration Skill didn’t have to consider these functions, as it required more artistic and sculpting skills.

With the aid of computers, such preliminary skills like sculpting were no longer necessary, replaced by requirements in mathematics and computation.

As times are changing, the polynomials, coefficients, and equations on the screen are also changing.

With local deformation, the facial features become completely unrecognizable.

Jiang Yuan typed for a while and then stood up saying, “Let’s run it and see.

Essentially, the radial basis function network is a three-layer feedforward network…”

While he spoke, he glanced at Medical Examiner Zhai, Doctor Ye, and the other young forensic doctors.

Medical Examiner Zhai, being older, obviously didn’t understand these things, but the young forensic doctors had all graduated from university not long ago.

Even though under normal circumstances, they wouldn’t understand this either, there was always the chance that there might be a mathematical prodigy among them…

But there wasn’t.

Everyone’s gaze instinctively shifted to other parts of the skeleton, and even though Forensic Anthropology always felt unfriendly, it was all relative.

Jiang Yuan then looked at Doctor Ye.

Doctor Ye looked back at Jiang Yuan with clear eyes and a smile.

Not understanding was just that, not understanding, and he, Ye, had a clear conscience.
