Chapter 430 - 430 397 Careful Verification
430: Chapter 397: Careful Verification 430: Chapter 397: Careful Verification Captain Liu, everyone is waiting,” Gao Yuyan said impatiently at the door, waiting for her newly assigned temporary partner.
Previously, she had followed Wang Chuanxing and others to investigate the social connections of the first victim, which mostly consisted of fallen girls, but they hadn’t turned up any results.
Now, Liu Wenkai had come to offer support and team up with her again, which Gao Yuyan actually felt was somewhat unnecessary.
However, out of respect for Liu Jinghui’s arrangement, Gao Yuyan still had to show face.
She had come all the way from Guqi City in the neighboring province, and without the background and care she was accustomed to at home, she had become increasingly cautious in her actions.
On the other hand, Liu Jinghui’s talent was genuinely impressive.
Gao Yuyan was witnessing for the first time a senior police officer who really relied on deduction to solve cases.
Even from a police officer’s perspective, she had to admit it was pretty impressive.
As for the officers from Ningtai County Bureau coming over to claim some credit, Gao Yuyan didn’t take it seriously.
In just a few days, the Luyang City Bureau had already been won over by the combination of Jiang Yuan, Xu Taining, and Liu Jinghui.
Pulling some people over to share in the benefits hardly counted as an issue.
“Here I am,” Liu Wenkai emerged from the changing room.
Having changed into fresh clothes and freshened up, Liu Wenkai looked incredibly clean and refreshed, showing no signs of the wear and tear of travel.
Gao Yuyan frowned and asked sensitively, “Have you put on hair oil?
Did you also apply some face cream?”
“I’ve applied some face cream and essence.
The long car ride here was nearly causing me varicose veins,” Liu Wenkai rubbed his face and then widened his eyes, asking, “Do I look spirited now?”
“What do you want to do?” Gao Yuyan crossed her arms defensively, her guard fully up.
Liu Wenkai was known for being good at interrogations in Ningtai County.
Seeing Gao Yuyan’s expression, he couldn’t help but laugh, then patiently explained, “The vigilance of the fallen women is not low.
Making oneself look neat and clean is the first step to gaining their favor, right?”
“Do you think they would dare not talk when questioned by the police?” Gao Yuyan was skeptical.
“What if they ‘forget’?” Liu Wenkai, knowing that Gao Yuyan was related to Director Gao from Guqi City, patiently added, “Our goal is to gather information, not to lecture them on life choices or coerce them into reforming.
Bringing back information amiably benefits everyone.”
Gao Yuyan had to admit, Liu Wenkai had a point.
Although as police officers, putting pressure on fallen women could yield information, which fallen woman should they pressure?
Neither of them knew who actually had the intelligence.
Gao Yuyan wasn’t seeking to correct her workstyle, she was just uncomfortable with Liu Wenkai’s attitude and couldn’t help but quip, “You’re quite familiar with fallen women.
That’s not normal.”
“I’ve done undercover work,” Liu Wenkai said with a slight smile.
“The County Bureau needs undercover operations to solve cases?” Gao Yuyan was astonished.
“Prostitution cases often require undercover work to gather solid evidence.
Short-term undercover assignments, just for a few days,” Liu Wenkai explained, shaking his head at Gao Yuyan’s seemingly naive response.
The two drove to Hongxiang Village, followed by several other vehicles.
Hongxiang Village had an alley where wanderers would streetwalk, and upon getting business, they would rent a nearby house for a short time.
If the police showed up, they would turn and run.
Over a dozen detectives from out of town, along with two local teams, sealed off the entrance to Hongxiang Village before a few officers like Liu Wenkai began to enter, one by one, to conduct their undercover inquiries.
However, only the dozen or so visiting detectives had the chance to make one round of inquiries before a whistle from outside sent the wanderers into a frenzied escape.
Several drones buzzed into the air, and with almost one-on-one capturing, failure was not an option.
Liu Wenkai stepped out of a rented house, shouting, “Don’t be too violent, watch how you handle things, enforce the law civilly, enforce the law civilly!”
He couldn’t actually see anything, but the few fallen girls who heard his shouting felt a bit of warmth in their hearts.
As the last fallen girl was arrested and everyone quickly moved into the nearby police station, they began a large-scale interrogation and questioning operation.
Truthfully, taking a statement on the spot from ordinary people is the simplest way, and it’s not always necessary to bring them back to the bureau or station.
However, the wanderers’ conditions were clearly not stable, and their trust with the police was extremely fragile.
Amiable conversation was definitely not possible.
Even in the interrogation room, the girls weren’t too cooperative.
Those who worked in the outskirts, like the Hongxiang village, typically had extensive experience and ventured out there due to lack of competitiveness in the city areas.
They feared the police, but that fear did not extend to obedient compliance.
Despite the loud threats and inducements from several Luyang City detectives who handled serious cases, the effectiveness was mediocre at best.
As Liu Wenkai had said, if they simply claimed, “I don’t know,” “I don’t remember,” or “I wasn’t paying attention,” it became difficult to proceed with the questions.
This was different from interrogating convicts; convicts were brought in because there was evidence against them.
With them, leniency could be extended for cooperation, but otherwise, they could expect stringent treatment.
On the current Criminal Law, the punishment was often more severe than ordinary people could accept—like probation turning into actual jail time, six months turning into one year, or three years turning into five.
Once it personally affected someone, even the most intimidating figures would have second thoughts.
But for mere questioning, it wasn’t necessary; being a wanderer didn’t necessarily mean facing punishment.
Speaking in a mixture of truth and lies might even be ingrained in the marrow of certain individuals.
