Chapter 1251: Chapter 1178: Hurried Footsteps
Heshan City.
At 4:30 in the afternoon, the sun had already set.
Ren Kuangshan arrived at his trusty BBQ stand. If there was any good to come from the early sunset, it was that the BBQ stand opened earlier, and it could be counted as dinner.
Ren Kuangshan greeted the owner and ordered, "Three grilled fat, a handful of mustard lamb tripe, and five skewers of lamb meat."
"Alright," the owner replied promptly, and soon brought the order, adding a bowl of soup, "Freshly cooked lamb soup made from lamb bones simmered all day, to warm you up."
"Thank you, thank you," Ren Kuangshan felt genuinely warmed inside.
He had spent years driving trucks away from home. As the saying goes, when one leaves their hometown, they become lowly. Truck drivers endure more grievances than hardships, with no outlet to express them. For a while, Ren Kuangshan envied couples who drove trucks together. Two people living in one truck, taking turns driving, cooking meals, and even having a marital life at night.
Later, Ren Kuangshan didn’t envy them much. Kids need schooling, it’s crucial to have the mother around, both parents leaving would turn the child into a left-behind child.
As for himself... Before getting cancer, Ren Kuangshan felt that one must fulfill one’s responsibilities. After getting it...
Ren Kuangshan took a big gulp of lamb soup, grimacing at the heat, thinking, people are not much different from lambs, destined to be consumed by shepherds, one can’t control much.
All he can do is leave some money behind. If he stayed home, the hard-earned money over the years would likely end up at the hospital. In the end, he’d merely watch his wife mourn by the bedside, not knowing if she’s crying for him or for the empty household, for the life ahead.
Now, it’s better. Ren Kuangshan left the hard-earned money over the years to his wife. Before leaving, she cried all she needed to in those ten minutes. Ren Kuangshan felt she was truly crying for him.
In today’s society, for a man to have a woman genuinely cry for him for ten minutes is quite enough.
Ren Kuangshan shook his head, took another big gulp of lamb soup, grimacing again from the heat, nearly spitting it out. But he had the determination to keep it in his mouth and gulped it down reluctantly.
"There’s oil on the lamb soup, it cools slowly, you can’t drink it like that." The owner quickly came over to say after noticing him.
Ren Kuangshan nodded with a smile, saying "I know," then picked up a skewer, seemingly casually commenting, "Owner, where around here do more outsiders gather? Where is lively at night?"
"This side can be considered lively enough. If you want more excitement, it’s the big crossroad, Construction Square." The owner replied.
Ren Kuangshan asked, "Is it chaotic?"
"A bit. However, there are fewer people now, especially young people, so it won’t get too chaotic, can’t compare to the 90s." The owner said with a nostalgic face.
Ren Kuangshan politely smiled.
After eating the BBQ, Ren Kuangshan hailed a taxi to Construction Square.
With money in hand and deciding to stay in Heshan for a while, he planned to set up a safe house. With the local rent being cheap, the lease needed to be paid annually with at least two months deposit, which altogether was just a few thousand.
Ren Kuangshan first explored the area personally, then found a relatively large house online. It was a two-bedroom one-living room with no shared space, furnished with some old furniture and appliances, barely bringing along luggage. It was part of the street-side family building built by the former production construction corps, just crossing an alley to reach a crossroad, not a residential community but convenient in transport, with a few neighbors.
Like many small cities in Northeast, Heshan City’s elderly have gradually moved away with their children, especially those with better conditions.
Around the house Ren Kuangshan chose, there were many rental apartments. Mainly because they can still be rented out. Further places had more vacant houses with too few tenants, making owners too lazy to list them for rent.
To Ren Kuangshan’s capability, this was a rather suitable hideout he could think of.
Ren Kuangshan planned to stay for half a year, and then go abroad. By then, any ideas from the sponsor behind him should have subsided.
Ren Kuangshan thought about the person the other party wanted him to kill was an academician, internally being extremely vigilant.
Their audacity to kill an academician obviously implied his own end would be inevitable if they wanted, making Ren Kuangshan dare not follow the original plan to go abroad.
Leaving the square, Ren Kuangshan, like a moth, headed wherever the lights glowed, both to pass time and scout.
Passing a brightly lit building, he saw the sign "International Trade Starlight KTV," hesitated a bit, but resisted going inside.
Staying in a small city enhanced his sense of security, but the expected enjoyable experience was greatly diminished.
In bigger cities, the more dazzling places are the more hidden; many places lack even signs or facades, requiring friend introductions to enter. Ren Kuangshan had only heard of such places before, never witnessed them.
Small cities were good, opening right beside commercial circles, but after much thought, Ren Kuangshan still dared not.
His face was already on wanted posters, though not widely spread, uncertain who might see them. Ren Kuangshan wandered outside, could wear a big hat, mask, and earmuffs, people would just think he’s a cold-sensitive outsider, But inside certain places, masks can’t be worn.
However, renting or even buying property due to Heshan’s influencer city status, its agents could handle the entire process, Ren Kuangshan only needed to provide a copy of a bought ID card.
"Don’t follow me!" Suddenly a man and woman quarreled in the front parking lot.
Ren Kuangshan couldn’t help but stop.
The man and woman just out of the store, both wore a coat. The woman wore black stockings, tall and slender.
The man following her was less impressive, his voice drunkenly saying, "What do you mean follow you, we agreed you’d come with me, what’s the meaning now? Reneging right?"
"I’ve told you, I don’t do this, at most come out for tea and relieve your hangover." The woman’s arm was grabbed by the man, struggling hard to break free.
The man laughed angrily, "Came out for tea just for tea? You think I’m a fool?"
"I really meant to drink tea... besides, I didn’t take your money..."
Ren Kuangshan touched the retractable baton he carried behind, considering playing hero to save the beauty, not for anything else, but to add her on WeChat, getting to know a few of her friends might be nice.
Just as he thought, two men suddenly rushed out from the dark.
"Stop fighting, move aside." One man spoke in a commanding Mandarin.
The slightly drunk man stood straight, asking, "Who are you? Let me tell you, don’t meddle in others’ business!"
"Police."
The man frowned, "I don’t know you, just saying you’re police makes you police? Show your credentials!"
The man showed his credentials to him.
"Out-of-town police right?" The drunken man chuckled, then released the woman beside him, saying, "Okay, out-of-town or not, me, a commoner, I’ll listen to you."
With that, he cupped his hands and turned to leave.
Ren Kuangshan stood in the darkness, watching the entire scene, not help lowering his head and quickly walked away.
