National Forensic Doctor -

Chapter 1034: Chapter 967: A Quick Glance
9:30 AM.
Jiang Yuan arrived at the office of the Criminal Police Brigade.
These past two days, he had been busy with insects, which had left him quite exhausted. It was a good opportunity to tidy up his small house in Changyang City and rest a bit.
After all, he had already completed his work as a forensic doctor. The upcoming investigative progress would inevitably take some time.
Jiang Yuan had just settled down when several chiefs rushed into the room, each eager to speak first.
"Captain Jiang, we are currently tracking six vehicles. Four of them have no issues, and the other two are still under investigation," the Chief of Image Investigation spoke up first.
Jiang Yuan smiled and did not respond to him directly, instead asking, "Are you all keeping an eye on me? What do you want?"
This line stopped the others who were about to speak.
Since the Chief of Image Investigation had already spoken, he immediately replied, "Actually, we do have some images that need enhancement..."
"Bring them here; let me have a look," Jiang Yuan prioritized addressing the person who had raised the issue, disregarding the others.
The Chief of Image Investigation quickly took out his laptop, opened it, showed several images to Jiang Yuan, and continued, "This vehicle took the most secluded route, and it passed through Yunji Road. Normally, it should have taken Lüzhong Road, but then it appeared on Maishan Road, making a triangular route, which raises its suspicion."
Jiang Yuan looked down at the images, and saw in the blurry videos only a van, whose specific model was hardly distinguishable — a classic performance of an old camera at nighttime.
Changyang City was an early adopter of security cameras, starting to install various surveillance devices at major intersections about 20 years ago. By now, along with the renewal of the city interface, not only the cameras but also the surveillance systems had gone through several generations.
However, secluded areas could not enjoy such benefits. Most obscure streets in the city had cameras installed during one overhaul of the surveillance system and then were used for a decade without change, replaced only if broken.
The camera on Maishan Road, which Jiang Yuan was viewing now, was likely installed at least seven or eight years ago. Given the technology level at that time, its video resolution and other specifications were limited, making it normal for the night footage to be unclear.
After a brief look, Jiang Yuan nodded and said, "Video enhancement can be done; let’s aim for this afternoon. It should be ready by then."
"That would be great; with Captain Jiang’s support, we in the Image Investigation Brigade can rest assured!" the Chief of Image Investigation gushed with overflowing emotional intelligence.
Ma Jiyang disdainfully glanced at him, waited for him to finish, then stepped forward and said, "Captain Jiang, as we interviewed former criminals, we have compiled a list. I was thinking, maybe we could cross-reference it with the lists from other lines of inquiry."
"That’s possible," Jiang Yuan immediately agreed.
The other chiefs, whether willing or not, began summoning people to update the list.
This case, for Jiang Yuan’s Accumulated Case Team, was considered a mid-level difficulty case, but for the Changyang City Bureau, it was already a major case of the year. The detectives in the special case group, too, were fully motivated to solve it.
Before Jiang Yuan’s arrival, their spirits might not have been so high because the case was very challenging, and effort alone was not enough to solve it.
The situation was indeed like that. Before Jiang Yuan readjusted the time of death, and confirmed the two occurrences of disposing of the body, the case was practically at an impasse.
The situation at that time, was like a patient with severe constipation, a thumb-thick door dilated by force to two thumbs-width, but still unable to solve the problem. Only by breaking and removing the hard lumps outside could exerting force mean anything.
Cao Chujun and others also made their reports, having their faces recognized, before standing up to begin their work for the day.
All the teams perform paperwork and integrate on-site investigations.
This is the most common investigation model in major cases nowadays: guided by technology, then dig deeper offline.
In terms of domestic criminals, they are relatively simple, primarily lacking the ability to form teams. In such cases, criminals proficient online often resemble white-collar criminals like Old American, with many possessing excellent technical skills, even surpassing the technicians employed by the police.
However, these individuals have much weaker offline response capabilities. Conversely, many are savvy offline, skilled in dealing with police stations through physical confrontations; encountering a slightly more advanced technical police officer, they quickly get nailed with conclusive evidence, and once there’s decisive evidence, an iron fist can easily crush them.
Jiang Yuan stood up and paced around the office, then lit an agarwood incense, placed in front of his desk, and casually picked up the Manjushri Bodhisattva pendant he was wearing today, inviting everyone to enjoy the scent and gradually calm their minds.
At this time, Wang Chuanxing organized the list of names from several fronts and asked, "Captain Jiang, should I print out the list, or send a digital version?"
Jiang Yuan said, "The digital version is fine. Printing it would be too long."
"Okay." While sending the file, Wang Chuanxing added, "They all created key suspect lists; those aren’t too long if it’s just focused lists."
"Oh, they all made key lists, is this the style of Changyang City Bureau?
"They must all be somewhat anxious," Wang Chuanxing understood the eagerness to achieve commendable results. For criminal police encountering major cases, spending long nights, the emotional stress is immense, yet on the other hand, each year, the significant cases are few, and they represent rare opportunities.
Police officers, unlike criminals, cannot choose when or the scale and severity of the cases they handle.
Thus, encountering a major case is also a career opportunity for criminal police, especially one with prospects of being solved; everyone approaches it with the mindset of tackling a crucial examination.
For some people at certain times, the occurrence of a significant case could be a life-altering event equivalent to an important exam. If marriage is considered a woman’s second rebirth, then a significant case is a criminal police officer’s nth rebirth, akin to the first tadpole marathon race."
This is also why so many bureaus are lining up to endure the pressure from Huang Qiangmin. In reality, it’s only superficial suffering; after a brief period of pain, there follows prolonged happiness and joy.
Jiang Yuan opened the file sent by Wang Chuanxing, only to see the densely packed names, along with gender, age, educational background, criminal record, and other information, along with lengthy remarks.
Different brigades presented slightly different styles of documents, but overall, they all contained a substantial amount of information.
Then, Jiang Yuan opened a focused suspect list, noting it contained even more information, many detailed with different colors to signify various levels of verification.
Jiang Yuan quickly skimmed it, then opened a few more focused lists.
Frankly, he supported this method of creating focused lists.
The efforts on several fronts were actually progressing smoothly; it is now a process of nearing completion. With bad luck, endless investigations might be needed, but with good luck, results could come soon.
But it doesn’t matter, this case isn’t particularly time-sensitive. The murderer has made it this way probably to evade the investigation, indicating a lower likelihood of fleeing. In this situation, a homicide from over a month ago could acceptably take another month to investigate.
And given the length of these lists, results must emerge within a month anyway.
While Jiang Yuan thought this, he pulled out another list, ready to examine it closely, when the phone on his desk rang.
Upon answering, he heard Yu Wenshu greet him and say, "Jiang Yuan, I saw the list of names you sent to my email. I just glanced at it, but, there’s a name that appears on three lists."
