Chapter 1017: Chapter 953: For What Reason
"Director Lang is really going all out."
Su Shanming and others in front of the temporary office on the third floor of the Criminal Police Brigade hung a sign reading "4303 Special Task Force," symbolizing this is the third restructuring of the 430 Special Task Force.
The number is an internal temporary code, but the scale of this restructuring has still astonished Su Shanming and the others.
The size of the task force was substantial even ten years ago. Add to that, many of the then Little Karamis have become captains, directors, department heads, and so forth after a decade of progress. Bringing these people back is not only cumbersome but definitely impacts the police bureau’s personnel allocation significantly.
Lang Heng’s ability to bear such pressure also illustrates from one perspective how seriously he takes this case. Similarly, even the former Little Karamis knew that Director Lang was serious.
Ling Han, also a captain, snapped a cigarette into life with a "pop", took a drag, and then said, "Don’t know how long it will take. We still have cases piling up in our team."
"Really? Then ask Captain Jiang to do it." Su Shanming fanned himself with his hand and, reluctantly, also lit a cigarette. He couldn’t just suffer from second-hand smoke.
Ling Han laughed heartily, "No need, it’s better we just keep pounding the pavement, we’ll eventually solve the cases. Hey, I’ll arrange for you to speak before me later; after that, I’m in a rush to get back."
"Alright." Su Shanming truly was the least hurried one, as his duty was to lead the team following Jiang Yuan. His task wouldn’t be considered complete until Jiang Yuan’s tasks were finished. Unlike Ling Han and others who were anxious to get back to their own matters.
Soon, Liu Jinghui arrived, apologizing repeatedly upon seeing so many people gathered, and distributing a box of Zhonghua cigarettes he had saved earlier, then he began a discussion session with everyone.
The case from ten years ago, while fresh in the memory of some, might have been almost forgotten by others.
Everybody’s joys and sorrows differ, and the detectives are no exception.
Most retained a fairly clear impression of case 430, but to conclude based on that information alone was too much of a stretch.
Liu Jinghui could only listen and take notes, not dismissing everyone until the evening.
"How did it go?" Huang Qiangmin and Lang Heng asked expectantly.
"Too little information, we can’t derive any effective conclusions for now," Liu Jinghui shrugged and said, "The current information has essentially been investigated by the task force already, reopening the investigation now might not make much sense."
Liu Jinghui turned to Huang Qiangmin, saying, "This case involves many individuals, if we are to restart the investigation, we need to focus on these involved parties."
"Indeed, we have investigated all conceivable angles before... what approach do you have in mind regarding the involved parties?" Lang Heng wasn’t worried about Liu Jinghui making demands, he was more worried about him having no ideas at all.
"The top priority naturally concerns the surviving boy. He’s 18 now; has he recalled any additional information?" Liu Jinghui asked.
"He definitely has been actively communicating with us, but his memories of that year have become quite inaccurate now," Su Shanming, who had stayed behind, joined the discussion actively.
Liu Jinghui: "What do you mean?"
Su Shanming looked toward Lang Heng.
Director Lang waved his hand, "There’s nothing we can’t talk about; we didn’t teach him to do this."
Su Shanming then said, "To be honest, there’s nothing novel about it. The surviving boy has been in frequent contact with us over the years, we’ve taken some statements, he himself has done plenty of investigation and even discussed the case on specialized forums... So, it’s evident from his statements that over the years he’s starting to fabricate more and more information."
At this point, Jiang Yuan also came over and expressed his surprise, "How can we be sure that it’s fabricated information?"
"There are plenty of reasons. His statements in recent years have been contradictory, and there are some that obviously do not match the facts as we understand them. Moreover, from his phone, we saw some chat and browsing records indicating that some of his statements were information processed from forums. The stories were not well crafted." Su Shanming looked at Lang Heng again and continued: "We brought in a psychologist for him, and well, given his circumstances, it is a normal phenomenon."
After Su Shanming finished speaking, Lang Heng added, "Although his later testimony was fabricated, we fundamentally accept his statements made after the incident, and the facts of the case have not changed."
Liu Jinghui paused, and then smiled, "If that’s the case, then the problem is somewhat simplified."
"How so?" Everyone looked over.
"The credibility of the survivor’s testimony has greatly decreased, so we’ll temporarily disregard that aspect," Liu Jinghui’s finger randomly traced two lines on the table, then continued: "Let’s focus on the factual aspects."
Everyone displayed a serious attitude, listening intently.
Liu Jinghui sketched a ’one’ with tea on the table, "First, the two victims were, one an adult female and the other her 14-year-old daughter, both of whom had some ability to resist. The question is, by what means did the murderer manage to kill them together in one room without leaving much trace of resistance."
Liu Jinghui: "Typically, such situations involve threats. Using weapons as threats or coercion is common. Secondly, beating and attacking. Thirdly, organized by a group. Fourthly, lacking conditions and routes for escape..."
Liu Jinghui outlined it roughly, then said: "Both victims were strangled to death. Although this does not allow us to infer whether the murderer was armed, the murderer must have had a physical advantage. Otherwise, it would be quite challenging to strangle two females separately. Was it done by the same person?"
The last sentence, Liu Jinghui asked Jiang Yuan.
Jiang Yuan nodded: "It is highly likely it was the same person."
People leave traces when they die; although some traces may not lead straight to the murderer, they can confirm consistency among traces.
Liu Jinghui nodded and said, "So, from various angles, the murderer at least has a definitive advantage in physical strength."
Everyone nodded, finding this conclusion rather persuasive.
"Secondly, there’s a point I think we can discuss." Liu Jinghui drew a ’two’ with tea on the table, "The two victims were above average in appearance. Given he had full control and absolute physical advantage, why did the murderer not commit rape? Or even any lecherous behavior?"
A few people raised their eyelids. Since the victims were dead, it’s highly probable that if the murderer had engaged in any lecherous behavior, it would have left traces.
As for Liu Jinghui’s logic, why having control automatically leads to certain actions... This topic, if discussed on public social media, would definitely meet severe backlash, but from a criminal investigation perspective, does a burglar who breaks into a house limit themselves to just theft?
The law imposes severe penalties on burglary precisely because it can easily turn into robbery, rape, or murder. It’s clear, those who commit burglaries are thieves, certainly not ’honorable’ thieves; fundamentally, they opt for opportunist entry. Seeing that a house is easy to break into, they enter. If it’s possible to steal, they steal; if not, they rob; if desire ignites, they rape; and if resisted strongly, they kill.
In prison, at least half of the conversations among various criminals revolve around sexual topics.
"If the suspect is considered to be the father, then this point doesn’t need discussion," Liu Jinghui paused briefly, then said: "But if we rule out the father as a suspect, we can’t help but ask, what was the purpose of the murderers breaking into the house? They stole only a few possessions, had control over the mother and daughter, yet did not commit rape or possibly even lecherous acts, then killed them... Why? What was their motive?"
This prompted deep contemplation among those present.
Lang Heng couldn’t help but nod, "That’s a good question. If they were after money, they didn’t get much, they could have easily fled. And about resistance, the mother hid her son, and there were no signs of fierce resistance at the scene... Could it purely be for murder? But..."
He hissed, not continuing further.
Su Shanming took over, "If it’s a crime of passion, that brings us back to previous inquiries which we have already thoroughly investigated..."
"The daughter was also 14 years old. Have we investigated her surroundings?" Liu Jinghui’s finger traced another line.
