Chapter 1004: Chapter 940: Tailing

"Don’t stop the car, keep driving forward." Mu Zhiyang, having received Jiang Yuan’s nod of approval, spoke into the walkie-talkie: "Cars one through five, the drivers please report in."

Being criminal police officers, although they had just been having a good time, as soon as they heard the voice and orders, they knew something was up, and the drivers of the five cars swiftly reported in.

Mu Zhiyang then said: "We are now possibly being tailed. All units pay attention. Do not fall behind, report any issues immediately, and do not stop the car."

Mu Zhiyang was continuously issuing orders, preparing for the worst. Previously, he had trained with the special police unit and the armed police. Coupled with his daily routine of reading books and tutorials, his defensive skills had reached a certain level of professionalism.

Jiang Yuan let him take charge. Being a technical police officer graduated from a forensic science program without any experience in commanding at the scene, he was not certain about the correct response.

So, Jiang Yuan called Huang Qiangmin.

"Jiang Yuan!" Huang Qiangmin’s voice carried a smile, clearly in the midst of a pleasant conversation.

Jiang Yuandao: "We are on our way back to Jiali Village and have found ourselves being followed. We have five cars, among which two are civilian vehicles. There are also two civilians."

As he spoke the word "followed," Huang Qiangmin’s nasality unmistakably intensified.

After a few seconds of silence, Huang Qiangmin said, "Send me your current location, I will arrange for someone to meet you. Are you armed?"

"No," Jiang Yuan said. "We have police equipment in the trunk, there should still be one or two bulletproof vests and shields, batons, and the like."

"No problem, unless they bring out rifles, ordinary handguns aren’t much of a threat to a moving vehicle. Continue driving without stopping; I’ll check where Director Lang’s people are," Huang Qiangmin simply instructed. Gun control is quite strict domestically, and although there are some slip-throughs, thinking normally, the chances of an ambush attack on Jiang Yuan and others were still not very high.

Although the probability was low, Huang Qiangmin could not bear the possibility of Jiang Yuan being attacked, especially since he had spent many years as a criminal police officer. Although he had been safe for the vast majority of the last two or three decades, even going years without hearing a gunshot, as long as he was on the front line, it was never truly safe.

Often, lives are fought for with everything one has.

Huang Qiangmin quickly gave a few more instructions, hung up the phone, and then immediately called Lang Heng. Communicating swiftly as always, Huang Qiangmin began to dial his own chief’s number.

The sky had completely darkened.

The headlights of the five cars shone brightly, not moving too fast. The tailing car showed no intention of hiding, following at a distance; not getting any closer, nor leaving.

"Quite audacious," Mu Zhiyang glanced back, then turned around again, keeping silent.

If it weren’t for Jiang Yuan in the car, Mu Zhiyang would have considered turning around to confront them, but if they did, the opponent might also turn and run, turning it into a mountain chase, which would be riskier for them.

And if the pursuers didn’t turn to flee—that felt even more dangerous.

With these thoughts in mind, Mu Zhiyang whispered, "We could set an ambush with a few people and a car at the mountain road’s bend. As soon as they pass by, we could use a car to block their escape, trapping them like dumplings in a basket."

Naturally, this was under the assumption that the other party was unarmed.

Jiang Yuan hesitated for a moment, then shook his head, "It’s a bit risky for those laying the ambush, not necessary. As long as we make it back safely, they cannot escape."

There was a few hundred meters’ distance between the convoy and the blatantly tailing car. In other words, to set up an ambush car at the bend, it meant that the ambushing vehicle would have to break out a few hundred meters from the convoy. And in the time it would take for the convoy to turn towards the ambush point, the ambushing vehicle and the tailing vehicle would essentially be in a 1v1 situation.

Unless there are very few people in the tailing car, just one or two, there would be significant risk to the officers in the ambush car. To talk about leaving an additional car for the ambush, given the conditions of the mountain roads here, it would be easy for the opponent to spot it, nullifying its intended effect.

Mu Zhiyang suggested leaving someone behind to eliminate hidden dangers. It would be best to catch the tailing person and interrogate them to find out their identity and who their accomplices are. But then he thought, they were unfamiliar with the terrain, and the other party was probably well-acquainted with the local environment, so there was really no need to forcibly apprehend anyone now.

Buzz...

Huang Qiangmin’s call came through, saying, "The Chang Le City Criminal Police Brigade was already on the road, and they are about thirty minutes away from your location now. It’s dark, and driving fast isn’t possible. I’ll have our people bring equipment and head up there; the first batch will take about an hour or more."

Jiang Yuan acknowledged with a sound, then added, "I have five cars here, and we have increased the distance from the other party, so safety shouldn’t be an issue. There’s no need for additional reinforcements at the last minute. The main issue is that the enemy situation is unclear. But with the dark and narrow road, tell the reinforcements not to hurry."

"Will do."

Jiang Yuan also said, "The tailing car behind us doesn’t seem to be taking much cover anymore, I reckon they are not clear about our identities, they might have misunderstood something. There should be no major problems."

"It’s possible. But still, you must be careful," Huang Qiangmin emphasized again and again.

Boom.

A thunderclap echoed from the distant mountains.

Both men on the phone were momentarily stunned.

Soon, the pattering sounds came from the roof of the car.

Mu Zhiyang, who was sitting by the window, reached his hand out and then turned to say, "It’s started to rain, moderate rainfall."

"How far are you from Jiali Village? What’s the road condition like there?" Huang Qiangmin immediately asked on the phone.

Jiang Yuan hesitated for a few seconds and said, "Not far, we just passed Jiali Village not long ago."

While speaking, he saw the taillights of the car behind twisting and turning onto the road to Jiali Village.

Mu Zhiyang observed for a moment and said, "The surveillance car may have gone to Jiali Village, probably because they think the road down the mountain is bad."

The roads here are narrow and there are many sections on the descent from Jiali Village where it’s impossible to turn around. There’s a particularly narrow stretch of road where even passing is unfeasible. Instead, one car has to pull over to a widened area and wait for the oncoming vehicle to pass before continuing. Conducting surveillance on such roads is naturally dangerous - if it turns into a reverse escape, those with poor driving skills are very likely to crash down the mountain.

"Let’s have a look," Jiang Yuan’s convoy stopped, found a curve on the highway, and looked into the distance.

The taillights of the surveillance vehicle shone brightly, it drove for a few minutes into Jiali Village, then turned off the lights.

Jiang Yuan raised his cellphone again and said, "Commissioner Huang."

After a few seconds of waiting, Huang Qiangmin’s voice came through, "I’m here."

"The surveillance car has entered Jiali Village, we’re heading back now."

"Alright. Is there any chance they would end up on the same route as you?" Huang Qiangmin still wanted to confirm.

"No," Jiang Yuan affirmed, "We changed speeds midway and they kept their distance; it’s not the normal driving pattern."

"Understood. I’ll make another call."
