Chapter 835: Chapter 319: Contacting the Dark Goddess, I Want to Hear Her Voice_2
She might forget others, but she could never mistake her card buddies.
"It’s not like that, my family’s situation is rather complicated..."
Wayne narrated a coherent version, breaking down the character relationships, and clarifying the causes and effects, which left Dreyne’s head spinning. What was originally clear became utterly confusing in the end.
"Cut the crap. I don’t care about your family’s situation. My stay in Lundan isn’t long, and you are responsible for playing cards with me during that time." Dreyne huffed coldly, prompting Wayne to immediately turn the car around.
Now, right away, she wanted to see poker cards and chips within ten minutes, buddy.
The scene shifted to the home of the Moonlight Church High Priest.
Due to the visit of the God-chosen Knight, Philomena’s mansion had been turned into a card-playing parlor, and she couldn’t even complain about it. Dreyne was a Moonlight Knight; many would kneel and beg for the chance to play cards with her, yet they would not be granted access.
If it weren’t for her climbing onto Wayne’s high branch, she wouldn’t have this opportunity either.
At the card table, Dreyne was rubbing her hands enthusiastically, urging Anastasia to deal the cards quickly. She hadn’t been at the table for over twenty-four hours; it felt as long as twenty-four years.
Philomena watched Anastasia, the dealer, with a wary eye. According to what Chris said, the Holy Maiden of the Dark Church looked at Wayne with very strange eyes; she had to be on her guard.
Philomena thought it absurd, but Chris was adamant and even placed a bet on it as someone with experience.
The stakes were high. If she lost, she would have to listen to Chris at home and even call her own student ’sister.’
She couldn’t lose!
Holding her cards, Philomena noticed Chris staring at her with an expressionless face, wondering what was going on.
Chris sighed inwardly. Philomena had it all – good looks, figure, temperament; she was an impeccable woman in terms of appearance.
As a teacher, Philomena took special care of her.
But as a woman in the throes of love, Philomena was hopeless; she declared that this or that wouldn’t do, getting played by scoundrels, infuriatingly naive.
Although they were rivals, Chris almost felt sorry for her. With no sense of defense, how would she survive in the future?
Just like this, she wouldn’t last three rounds in Viley’s hands.
Philomena, lacking survival experience, was destined to lose everything at the poker table of love. Chris didn’t expect her to understand the look in one’s eyes and took it upon herself to say, "Wayne, where have you been all day? Have you been dining with the Knight Lord the entire time?"
"Not just dining. Lately, I’ve been doing research. Last night, I was at the Magic Department looking through materials, didn’t close my eyes all night." Wayne slickly deflected the question, pointing to his bloodshot eyes as proof.
"You’ve worked hard for this household all night."
Chris’ graceful demeanor was like that of a noble lady, making Philomena swallow her saliva quietly. She was inexperienced but not brainless; she quickly grasped the hidden meaning in Chris’s words.
Wayne hadn’t been home all night, and neither had Dreyne. Where did the two of them go last night?
Dreyne, keen and eager, lost the first hand. Seeing Anastasia push her chips towards Wayne, she viciously grabbed the table corner.
In an instant, all three players pulled their hands back from the table, and Anastasia subconsciously stepped back.
"What’s the matter, think I can’t afford to lose? Don’t underestimate me, it’s only the first hand!"
An unlucky start, Dreyne muttered bitterly, letting Anastasia continue dealing the cards. Winning early didn’t count; Wayne had taken her bait of feigning weakness. Now, she’d show her skills with a comeback against the wind.
A headwind is still wind, and no matter what kind of wind, when standing at the wind’s edge, even pigs might fly.
Dreyne kneeled nine hands in a row, and the poker table soared, embedding itself firmly into the ceiling.
"Impossible, absolutely impossible!"
Amidst the scattered chips, Dreyne pointed at Wayne, "Have you noticed, ever since I started playing cards with you, I haven’t won a single time?"
"Ah, is something wrong with that?"
Wayne looked puzzled: "Life is just like that. Some are meant to lose, others to win. I’m lucky, always winning, no problem there."
Pah, as if a chronic gambler ever only loses!
Even if favored by the Goddess of Fortune, the chances of winning or losing should be even. It’s impossible to win all the time!
"Admit it, you cheated!"
"You cheated."
"Not me, you!"
"Not me, you."
"Oy, you little brat, I’m going to sort you out today."
Dreyne, infuriated, stepped forward and grabbed Wayne’s collar. Two seconds later, seeing no one stopping her, and Anastasia looking as if that’s how things should be, she was even more enraged.
Who are they looking down upon? She had always been a fair player.
The more Dreyne thought about it, the angrier she became until she turned to the woman beside her and said, "Chris, last night Wayne and I had a candlelit dinner at Buckingham Palace. He recommended many dishes you like, then he took me to the Magic Department’s theater. But don’t you worry, we just spent the night reading, nothing else."
Why are you explaining if nothing else happened?
Philomena was livid; even the grand Moonlight Knight was stealing the man of a Regional High Priest. She didn’t even consider her own age; how brazen.
Damn it, what’s become of the Church!
Philomena was fuming, denouncing the shameless behavior of the old cow eating young grass. Chris smiled faintly: "I see, you just spent the night reading. Don’t laugh, but I get very jealous. If you hadn’t clarified, I certainly would have misunderstood Wayne. Now, it’s okay."
How could it be okay? Even if you don’t mind, I do!
