Chapter 826: Chapter 317: Twilight of the Gods, The Last Dharma Age

Buckingham Palace.

At eight o’clock in the evening, Wayne and Dreyne finished dining within the palace walls and drove away with the cool beauty.

Queen Sophia was not present, residing at the Magical Department Headquarters for the time being, handling the power transition and assisting Austin in how to manage a nation in chaos efficiently.

The handover process should have been at Buckingham Palace; to avoid suspicion, Austin insisted on choosing the Magical Department Headquarters.

To be honest, avoiding suspicion was hardly effective. The affair between the queen and Austin was an open secret among all the nobles in Lundan.

Avoiding suspicion was essentially just a way for Austin to grow tired of the palace and seek a new battlefield at the Magical Department Headquarters.

To these rumors, Austin always took a laid-back approach. He had seen all scenarios; when rumors spread that Wayne was his illegitimate son, he had lain low and scarcely exerted effort to refute them.

With resignation settling in, he suddenly found the world a more spacious place.

Austin, assured of his integrity, treated gossip and whispers as mere jokes, regarding them with laughter and quickly moving past.

He avoided suspicion out of fear of Hefei’s misunderstanding and also to cut off any of Queen Sophia’s wild fancies.

Let the public be public, without a hint of personal emotion mixed in, and he hoped the queen would avoid dredging up the past, not to ruin the last remnants of friendship between them for politics.

With the queen away from Buckingham Palace, outsiders were not allowed in. In the past, Wayne wouldn’t have been able to enjoy such a feast in the palace.

Now it was different.

With a mere mention of his father, Austin, Wayne could go wherever he pleased in Lundan—the palace meals were free of charge, and even princesses were within reach if desired.

This, this was rebellion!

During the meal, Dreyne was a person of few words, chewing slowly and diligently maintaining the persona of the ice beauty.

But truly, the White Knight was quite delightful when silent.

Holding the White Night Purity Words, Dreyne would turn into the Moonlight Knight form, assuming a Moonlight Elf’s appearance with silver hair and eyes, valiant and majestic, exuding a noble and chilly aura that kept people at a distance.

In her normal state, she looked much like a Moonlight Elf, still with silver hair and eyes—she explained that after holding the White Night Purity Words for too long, she had unconsciously taken on this appearance.

Quite nice, she was very fond of the color white.

Wayne was curious about her true age. When he asked and received no answer, he speculated that legendary mages like Saina and Anastasia could merely be considered as Dreyne’s granddaughters.

A super elderly auntie!

"Dreyne, with the seal of the Icebound Continent largely stabilized, what do you God-chosen Knights usually do when not stationed there?" Wayne asked from the driver’s seat.

"Wait for the Goddess’s Divine Decree."

Dreyne glanced at Wayne. After repelling Torgoguryr, the chaos in the Icebound Continent had eased, and she had contacted the Moonlight Goddess to report on the battle situation.

She also mentioned Wayne, favored by the three deities.

The Moonlight Goddess acknowledged Wayne as her choice and instructed Dreyne to take good care of him while stressing the need to firmly push Nature and Sun out.

The Moonlight Goddess was not verbose, and with a little thought, Dreyne understood.

In the past, with no other options, to protect their Knights, the three Goddesses jointly chose Wayne as a reserve. In critical situations, sacrificing Wayne would save the lives of the three God’s Chosen Knights.

Now, with Torgoguryr repelled, the Moonlight Goddess greatly appreciated Wayne’s talent and, as a reward or compensation, designated him the next Moonlight Knight.

The Moonlight Goddess felt this way, and so, too, did Nature and Sun, which explained the somewhat bizarre command.

Dreyne found the task quite simple. She had assessed Philomena and Chris; the combination of a great beauty and a young miss was unbeatable. Wayne, being so sentimental, would certainly not abandon them, and they were already firmly hitched to the Moonlight Church’s chariot.

Not to say that securing this was certain, but the overwhelming advantage was with her.

The fear was that the Naturalism Church, shameless to the core in vying for the future Naturalist Knight, would issue simultaneous orders to Hefei and Veronica. The rare pairing of mother and daughter had a higher allure than that of teacher and student, a fact that could not be overlooked.

Dreyne, sitting in the passenger seat, was amused by these thoughts, shaking her head and muttering to herself.

Are you thinking about some very impolite things?

Wayne gave a sideways glance at his companion and continued, "What are the Goddess’s Divine Decrees usually about? Knights are warriors, blades of the Goddess in the mortal world. Given the Church-level destructive weapons, it’s unlikely you are left idle all the time."

"Previously, we had the long-term mission of guarding the Icebound Continent because the seals were deteriorating, shortening our shift rotations. We didn’t receive many Divine Decrees... What it will be like in the future, I don’t know yet."

There was nothing Dreyne concealed, treating Wayne as the next Moonlight Knight and familiarizing him with the Knight’s duties in advance, "Generally, God-chosen Knights do not get involved in conflicts between Churches, and it is rare for Knights to clash directly. When we show up, it’s either to clean up a mess or to warn the other side to back off while they can."

As strategic weapons for the Church, the main role of God-chosen Knights was deterrence. The Five Churches each had their God-chosen Knights, which ensured long-term stability for the Church; anyone daring enough to make a move should be prepared to swap allegiances.

"It should be like this, but..."

Dreyne’s expression suddenly became solemn, "Based on the Church-related missions I’ve carried out before, the relationship between Goddesses is neither as distant as the rumors suggest nor as inseparably close as strategic allies. Things are always changing."

Some things, as a Moonlight Knight, weren’t appropriate for Dreyne to state outright. As the next Knight, she hoped by these subtle hints, Wayne would better understand his place.
