Chapter 749: Chapter 296 Solid as Gold Soup, Impregnable, Advantage Lies With Me_2
"Frank was very clear about this, having laid out defenses along the border early on. They possess the world’s foremost army; even though they have suffered severe losses, their foundation as the world’s number one still remains. This crucial line of defense, so vital to the nation’s survival, will not fall."
Austin began analyzing the pros and cons, starting to discuss future strategic layouts. This wasn’t Windsor’s grand strategy, but instead how the Randao Family, under the current international situation, could minimize its losses and demonstrate its loyalty to the Royal Family.
Strictly speaking, Austin was quite patriotic. The current leading lady was his ex-girlfriend, who took good care of him; compared to other members of the Tulip Family, his life was very comfortable.
Even as payback, he would not commit treason, let alone rebellion.
But all this was predicated on one assumption: that Austin placed family above loyalty, first loving his own family, with what remained being devoted to his country.
The other Tulip Family members were probably much the same. Three hundred years had passed, and the loyalty of the Tulip Knights Order to the Royal Family had greatly diminished.
According to Austin’s analysis, under the shadow of war, with the economy declining and resources limited, the conflicts between Tulip Family members would become increasingly acute. What was urgent was to secure the family’s position.
Alright, alright, true to a Union Jack-bearing Lundan noble’s form, even at a time like this, they don’t forget to struggle amongst themselves.
Wayne raised an eyebrow; as the saying goes, outsiders fight outsiders, insiders fight insiders. Austin’s strategic insight focusing on internal strife was spot-on, but there was a significant error in his analysis of international affairs.
What does it mean, ’that defensive line will not fall’?
Do you know the true worth of terms like ’as solid as gold,’ ’impregnable,’ and ’the advantage is ours’?
While Wayne also felt that in the world of magic, with the Church’s numerous congregations and a hodgepodge of faiths leading to an epic strengthening, the defensive line wouldn’t be breached, the enhancements on Prussia’s side would be even more formidable.
It’s likely that defensive line would fall after all, no need to outflank; just a charge followed by a leaping slash from a mage would do the trick.
Thinking this, Wayne spoke up directly, "Austin, do you really believe that defensive line won’t fall, that it can protect us across the sea?"
"What else?"
The world’s first army defending with all its might—could it lose?
Interested, Austin, seeing Wayne insisting on giving, generously fulfilled his humble request.
Both men wagered heavily and set down their stakes.
If Austin won, it would prove that Wayne was just making trouble for nothing. Not only would Austin have to prove his innocence by removing all the past false accusations, but he would also have to destroy the undisclosed written wager on the spot and obey the commands of the family head thereafter.
If Wayne won, it would prove Austin’s lack of vision, unsuitability to lead the Randao Family forward, and he would need to step down from his current edition, with Wayne succeeding him as the new family head.
As per the old rules, Megan drafted the document, and both men signed it.
"Just wait until that defensive line is breached, and I become the head of the family. The first order will be for Aunt Mei to step down from her butler duties, to dwell in peace, bearing the child of the current master’s second wife."
Wayne imagined the future; Megan being the second wife wasn’t the point, rather it was legitimizing Philark, fulfilling a past promise to her.
He, Wayne, was going to let everyone know that unlike Austin, he cared about the butler’s professional integrity, not using it as a mere stepping stone to promotion.
The results would be clear!
"..."x2
Megan filed away the document with an expressionless face, instinctively glancing at the world map behind the desk, precisely locating the position of the defensive line, and beginning to think about how to breach it.
Austin smiled without speaking, happily fiddling with an ancient silver coin in his hand; silently standing by his certainty, he felt this was a sure win.
Redemption for past humiliation would come today.
"Wayne, do you think Frank, solely defending and not attacking, pinning hopes on a single defensive line, such a gambler’s mentality, is bound to fail?" With the document in place, Austin chatted boldly and freely.
This was also the reason why he had asked Wayne to come over today.
"No, I merely trust in Prussia. Just by looking at their sewer system, you can tell they are meticulous, pragmatic, highly intelligent, and very forward-thinking," reasoned Wayne.
Austin didn’t understand what Wayne was talking about and turned the conversation, "In your opinion, people of The Church wouldn’t participate in war, right?"
Finally, he was getting to the heart of the matter!
Wayne’s eyes brightened, "On the contrary, I believe that the mages of The Church will take part in the war. This war is different from the last. The previous fight broke off mid-way, and The Church didn’t get the chance to enter the fray before it ended; they wouldn’t pass up another opportunity."
Whether The Church would participate in the war was uncertain, but its mages definitely would.
There was no other reason; although faith knows no borders, mages do. Once war erupts and their relatives are killed, mages in their considerable grief would certainly seek revenge when the opportunity arises.
Considering the outcome of the First World War, it’s hard to say The Church wasn’t involved; they just didn’t bring their conflict to the forefront.
Wayne wasn’t guessing wildly; he had evidence, his identity as a Reincarnated Angel being one.
Out of the blue, why would Heaven send down seven angels, exactly matching the number of the seven Demon Kings of Hell? There was definitely a reason behind it.
The Heavenly Father’s Court is the leading faith on the God-chosen Continent, and when Heaven acts, it’s definitely on a large scale.
Take it a step further, and it could be that Heaven’s actions are not only directed against Hell but might also aim to sweep away all other faiths on the God-chosen Continent in one fell swoop.
Therefore, how could The Church possibly not be involved in this war!
"Since you think The Church will take part in the war, why do you believe Frank won’t be able to hold that defensive line?"
Austin asked curiously, "If the line were to fall, the whole of Frank would have no ground left to stand on, and they would face an unprecedented defeat; no church would want to witness that."
