Chapter 562: Chapter 241 Nightmare Corridor, Father Bids Farewell as Son Smiles

The selection for the Holy Maiden was more leisurely than Wayne had imagined.

Every day was either spent training or being fixed by Veronica, with occasional visits next door to pin Alex to the ground and grind him into the dirt.

Alex was numb to it all, his sister Ronica couldn’t hit him, Wayne couldn’t beat him, and Veronica never bothered with him, his already melancholic face now filled with suffering, feeling like he was about to break.

On March 12, the first round of candidate selection officially started, alleviating the suffering of the beleaguered Alex.

On the afternoon of the 8th, mages from headquarters worked on constructing something in front of villas number 4 and 8, clanking and banging all night long, and after repeated testing, they confirmed the teleportation gate was operational.

Then they dragged it out for another four days before starting the first round of selection. Setting aside Wayne’s lack of desire to become the Holy Maiden, even if he was interested, his patience had worn thin.

The leadership at headquarters was too slow for his taste. If he were Pope, he would have the Holy Maidens change backstage and then strut down the runway. Whoever scored the highest would be selected, and the whole process wouldn’t take more than three days.

He’d give them a bit of bedside guidance, talk to the candidates about the "nocturnal script," delve a little deeper into their acting skills, broaden their range a bit, and voilà, a qualified Holy Maiden would be selected, easy-peasy!

It really wouldn’t take half a year.

It was just that communication means were so-so; otherwise, a call from Pope Wayne for a grand celebration would give every registered believer voting rights, and that would be a real election spectacle, instantly overshadowing both the Sun and Moon allies.

That said, Wayne knew very well that the reason for the long delay was that the leadership was assessing the candidates’ wit and strategy.

A Holy Maiden could be a vase, but she absolutely must not be a simpleton.

Two villas, four neighbors—the deliberate arrangement surely had a purpose. The choices made by the candidates were critical: whether to get rid of the most familiar competitors early on or to form alliances to overcome difficulties together was a matter of strategy.

When the teleportation gate opened, it revealed the so-called Nightmare Corridor.

Wayne stood in front of the teleportation gate, his mouth still, lips parting as he said to Veronica, "Proceed with the plan. I want to see your nightmare. The Dragon Blood Curse is important, and you can’t just copy the answers for this one."

Veronica nodded, aware that such an opportunity was rare. If she could predict the Dragon Blood Curse early on, it would be crucial to overcoming future challenges.

She had full confidence in Wayne’s intellect and strength, believing that even if the nightmare came true, he could resolve the societal trash.

"Also, don’t lay a hand on Alex and his sister. The Nightmare Corridor is a test for all four of us. Having answers may allow us to breeze through this stage, but that doesn’t mean the coming challenges will be easily tackled..."

Wayne cautioned, "If I’m not wrong, the leadership is too chaotic. This selection for the Holy Maiden won’t involve any sort of combat tournament. All assessments and stages will be scored, and with each round, some candidates will be eliminated, and there may even be a revival round, but in the end..."

...it will all come down to fists!

After all, this is the Magic Realm, and no matter how well you do on a test, it doesn’t have as much conviction as a real battle.

This suited the current state of the top-level power games quite well. Each top-level backer’s candidate had a chance, with interests traded at every sieve.

It’s just unknown how many meetings the top brass had to sit through and how many shoes were thrown to decide on this year’s competition structure.

Two mages from headquarters checked again and, once satisfied there were no mistakes, handed over a contract resembling a life-and-death agreement for Wayne and Veronica to sign.

The contract didn’t reveal what was behind the teleportation gate, stating only that all risks were to be borne by oneself, and the specific assessment tasks had to be explored by the candidates themselves.

Wayne stepped through the teleportation gate first, entering the magic barrier—the Nightmare Corridor.

Before him, the world consisted of high black walls and a white floor, the black walls towering into the clouds, piercing the horizon, with a winding path starting from the point of entry and forming a labyrinth.

Bang!

Wayne swung his fist, striking squarely against the black wall. Web-like cracks spread rapidly, and the entire wall trembled on the brink of collapse.

But it didn’t fall.

The next second, the entire wall refreshed itself as if automatically.

Perhaps there were onlookers, so he experimented to prove he hadn’t brought cheat notes.

Veronica followed Wayne in, knowing the solution, she led the way through the twisted corridors of the maze, walking three hundred steps to face her own nightmare.

The world spun around Veronica; the black walls and white floor receded in a flash, her body appeared to fall through the clouds and onto the ground. Looking up, she saw Lando Manor coming into view.

She and Wayne were on the lawn in front of the Manor, and the black cat Monica was squatting on the grass doing its business.

Just the tips showing.

The sudden appearance of the two startled Monica; she jumped into the air, snapped mid-leap, and upon landing, scurried off in all directions, zipping into the nearby woods.

From a distance, they could still hear Monica cursing.

Did it have to be this realistic?

Wayne chuckled to himself, slapping Veronica’s shoulder: "Remember, everything you see besides me is a dream. Don’t trust anyone but me, got it?"

Veronica nodded. Wayne had already used the solution, so he wouldn’t be ensnared by the Nightmare Corridor’s illusions. Everything before her was a twisted reality—a dream, a fantasy of her own making.

"Let’s go inside and see how real this place looks."

The two entered the Manor, scoured the place, but not a single maid was to be seen.

Forget the maids, the Manor was completely empty, not even a ghostly shadow.

Soon, the first living soul showed up.

The door to the study opened, and Megan strolled out, politely nodding to the young master and miss. After some questioning, she explained that she had gone to look for Monica.
