Chapter 218: Chapter 125: Those Who Play with Holy Light Have Dirty Hearts

The sanctuary of the cathedral.

The domed ceiling was a huge rose window, painting the light and shadows in a riot of colors, creating a dizzying, dreamlike disarray that made one’s thoughts seem weightless and surreal.

On the wall hung a life-sized white crucifix, upon which the colorful beams of light could never land, ever pure white and devoid of any superfluous color.

Mona stood at the center of the sanctuary, her feet upon the intricate and profound Holy Light Array. She bathed in an expanse of brilliance, feeling her spirit cleansed, the devil already departed from her.

Artley had found Archbishop Gunther, and the two stood outside the Holy Light Array. Artley handed Mona the chalice filled with holy water, encouraging her with a smile.

Archbishop Gunther appeared as a middle-aged man with a pale, beardless face, but in reality, he was older than Artley.

Both being Golden Mages, Artley had participated in too many battles. In his youth, he was reckless, relying on Holy Light Magic fearlessly in face of wounds and death, often fighting outnumbered on the battlefield, and readily unleashing his unmatched fury.

As he aged, the years of accumulated hidden injuries accelerated his aging process. Though he could still unleash his peerless might, his limbs were far less nimble than in his youth, and he was currently considering transitioning to a clerical role.

At the same time, Artley’s fiery temper had greatly mellowed. Although he appeared authoritative, he was actually quite approachable, especially caring for his subordinates like a loving father.

Conversely, Archbishop Gunther was principled, transforming from a good-natured young man to a tough-as-nails figure with time.

Time, the butcher’s knife, had hardened the clerical workers with hearts of stone, while softening the brave warriors of the battlefield with benevolent faces.

Mona took the holy water into her mouth, looking up respectfully at the two leaders.

Archbishop Gunther nodded his head, activating the magic array. The Holy Light spread out like fog or tides, transforming into strands of white ribbons that wrapped tightly around Mona’s body from head to toe.

The crucifix on the wall cast a shadow that perfectly mirrored behind Mona.

Mona’s spirit relaxed, and her thoughts were liberated. A white ribbon slowly unfolded, expressing her thoughts in the form of text and images.

To avoid startling the enemy and to prevent missing out on important intelligence, Gunther did not immediately dispel the parasitic thoughts within Mona. Instead, he asked, "Who are the attackers, and which devil do they worship?"

The ribbon revealed a faceless portrait, followed by a series of words, "He practices Blood Magic, originally a follower of the Blood Tyrant from Hell, but in my pursuit, he encountered another powerful devil, whose mind was altered by the latter. He changed his name to Bruce, and his faith was transformed as a result."

Wayne’s hand strike was neither too light nor too heavy, and though Mona had fainted, she hadn’t completely lost consciousness. She vaguely heard the voice of the Thousand-Eyed Demon, with the clearest instances coinciding with the times when a lecherous hand touched her backside.

Mona didn’t mention the inappropriate touch, chalking it up to bad luck, and recounted how Wayne’s will had been violently twisted by the Thousand-Eyed Demon, forcing him to abandon his original faith and become the demon’s minion.

It’s the Thousand-Eyed Demon!

Artley and Gunther exchanged looks, each confirming their suspicions in the other’s eyes. They had received reports from Jianhe County that the Thousand-Eyed Demon had successfully descended and stolen many treasures from Saint Dominic Cathedral.

Such as the Holy Shroud.

The enemy had advanced from devil’s disciples to the devil himself. Gunther’s expression grew somber as he continued to inquire.

The ribbon brought forth all of Mona’s words, with the harder-to-express parts represented in illustrations, "The devil hides beneath Lundan, but the entrance is not in the sewers. It is one or more ancient, abandoned cities, accessible only through portals."

"Cities of Hell’s projection, where the devil has cast his domain into the human world," Artley murmured, his expression also becoming grave.

The descent of the Thousand-Eyed Demon was quite successful, with the Holy Shroud playing a crucial role. The Thousand-Eyed Demon’s powers were greatly enhanced, and though not as formidable as in Hell, it was definitely several times stronger than usual.

Mona continued, "Bruce was controlled by the devil, who gave him a mission. In turn, he assigned me the task to search for something in Lundan..."

"I have seen that Alchemy Array in ’The Seventh Forbidden Spell,’ 666 Heretics’ corpses stitched together, with a Hell Entrance born inside the chest cavity of the Corpse Demon..."

"Bruce had me compile a list of sixty-six names..."

"He implanted two commands in my mind, forbidding suicide and forbidding disclosure of his existence to anyone else..."

But you still spoke out!

Artley and Gunther glanced at each other again. The other party seemed rather dull-witted. If it wasn’t a question of intelligence, there was definitely a misunderstanding about the methods of the Holy See.

"His mind has been corrupted; it’s not surprising he made such a rudimentary mistake," Artley said.

"Maybe so..."

Gunther responded noncommittally, agreeing with Artley’s inference while not fully endorsing it. He continued to ask, "What else do you know about the devil?"

"The devil has amassed a large number of Black Sorcerers to serve him, gathering in the underground ancient city. One named Jeliff, who was recruiting Bruce, mentioned that the devil is brewing a grand conspiracy, which, if successful, could destroy the Holy See’s entire influence in Lundan."

Artley’s eyes flashed with gold, while Gunther frowned again. Such detailed intelligence, so detailed it felt as though he was present at the scene, as if the devil had just issued the orders and he already knew everything.

Impractical, revealing strangeness at every turn!

Gunther made a conjecture. Firstly, it was certain that the heretic called Bruce had a significant problem.

The fact that Mona survived and brought back intelligence was greatly attributed to Bruce’s significant role. It was very likely, and even probable, that he had done it intentionally.

Gunther was not so naive as to trust a heretic; Bruce’s practice of Blood Magic indicated that Blood Tyrant had placed a heavy bet on him, signifying that he was not merely a simple believer.
