Chapter 198: Chapter 117 Hell Passageway_2
The smile froze on his face.
It was empty!
Not believing in such misfortune, he closed the box and took two deep breaths to calm himself down before opening it again.
Still empty!
After several repetitions, Bishop Keith’s legs gave out, and he slumped to the ground against the shelf, "It’s over, it’s all over..."
"Bishop, be careful."
Young Master Wayne quickly stepped forward, catching the Holy Grail that nearly smashed into Keith’s forehead.
Luckily it didn’t hit him, otherwise the Holy Grail would have been damaged.
He peered into the empty box and his heart sank, "Bishop, is there something special about the Shroud?"
"The Holy Shroud itself is nothing extraordinary—just a plain piece of linen. It acquired its sacred properties from wrapping the remains of Saint Dominic, making it an extremely powerful holy relic," explained Keith, with his eyes closed in pain.
Bishop Keith said much more. His knowledge of the Holy Shroud was much less than that of the Thousand-Eyed Demon; he did not know that the Holy Shroud had returned to its master and was only aware that he’d become an unwitting accomplice to the Devil, speculating that the Thousand-Eyed Demon had completed its summoning ritual in the cathedral.
"So soon?!"
Wayne’s face grew grim as he puzzled, "No, that’s not right. If the Thousand-Eyed Demon was there, why did I, alone in the Devil’s stronghold, only encounter the Devil’s servants and not the Devil himself?"
"Mister Wayne, this is the Church, not the Devil’s... nest."
"Or perhaps the one I killed was the Devil himself."
Wayne didn’t pay attention to Keith and started to analyze, frowning, "No, that’s not right either. He was just a human. The Thousand-Eyed Demon was summoned into the Black Sorcerer, not a single person."
In the end, the two exchanged a look, and in the midst of Bishop Keith’s hopeful eyes, Wayne mercilessly shattered his illusions: "The Devil has already descended. The one I killed was merely a minion; the Devil is not in the cathedral—he has already left."
By the end of the conversation, Wayne wrapped the Holy Grail carefully and declared bluntly, "Bishop Keith, I must report this to Lundan, and I hope you will report to your superiors as well. The situation is very serious; pull yourself together quickly."
Keith, like a man awakened from a dream, withstood his mental and physical pain and left the storage room with Wayne to make phone calls to their superiors from the office.
The Thousand-Eyed Demon had descended in Jianhe County; the Devil’s minions had been wiped clean, but the Devil’s whereabouts were unknown.
Having sorted this out, Wayne bade Keith goodbye and returned to the Naturalism Church stronghold, where he found Darcy working overtime.
Darcy was surprised to see the boss return so soon and took the initiative to ask why.
Wayne didn’t mention the descent of the Thousand-Eyed Demon; it was beyond Darcy’s ability to handle, and there was no use discussing it further. He simply said that it was very dangerous recently and they should temporarily close the stronghold and not go out.
Afterwards, they would follow the notices from Lundan.
...
That same night, Wayne drove back to Lundan non-stop, with the trunk and even the back seats packed full of things.
On the front passenger seat, a Black Robe was stuffed into the Holy Grail.
The car stopped at Lando Manor, where Butler Megan had been waiting for a while, and saw Wayne placing one hand on his chest and bowing slightly.
"Young Master Wayne, the lady is waiting for you in the study, please follow me," Megan directed.
"Thank you, could you prepare some food? I will go to the dining room after talking with the teacher," Wayne nodded.
Wayne nodded and followed behind Megan, adding, "Prepare a bit more; I haven’t eaten in a long time and will be very hungry today."
"Understood."
The study.
Megan watched as Wayne entered, notified the servants to prepare dinner, and then stood quietly outside after closing the door.
This was Austin’s intention.
There were no ulterior motives, just to listen to what the teacher and student were discussing, to see if it was related to stockings or the like.
"Explain clearly, what exactly is going on with the Evil Gods of Hell?"
Hefei sat behind the desk, put down the paperwork, and took off her glasses as the student arrived.
During the phone call, they had only briefly spoken, and Hefei only knew of the Thousand-Eyed Demon’s arrival on Earth; she was not aware of the finer details.
"Here’s what happened. The night I went to the Jianhe County stronghold..."
Wayne recounted everything from beginning to end—from Darcy being invited to investigate the insect plague, to him being invited to capture the Devil’s followers, all the way up to Bishop Keith being controlled, allowing the Devil to complete the descent at the cathedral.
For a full ten minutes, Wayne spoke of everything he knew.
Hefei’s face showed speechlessness. While the demons of Hell were not archenemies of the Life Alliance, they belonged to the Evil God faction and could not be ignored by the Naturalism Church.
One headache after another!
Here it needs to be clarified that traditionally, Evil Gods come in two types: one is the devils crowding in Hell, and the other is the insane Mages roaming the Star Realm Cosmos, like the Void Lord. They are collectively referred to as Evil Gods and require certain conditions to be met in order to descend from the God-chosen Continent.
"Teacher, the details of the Thousand-Eyed Demon’s summoning ritual are unclear. We only know that the Holy Shroud was used. How powerful it is, is difficult to assess, and its current whereabouts are unknown..."
Wayne was deeply concerned, maintaining a pessimistic view: "The world is too vast, and a Devil hiding among humans will be incredibly hard to find again."
Hefei looked at her student with a smile, soothing his anxiety, "Don’t underestimate the Heavenly Father’s Court. They’ve been facing off against devils for so many years; there were previously successful Devil descents that they managed to send back. We may not find it, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be able to."
She had a point; they were the professionals, after all.
Wayne thought about it, realizing he may have been worrying needlessly, then continued, "Teacher, I hear that the Heavenly Father’s Court has very limited power in Windsor. Do you think they will cooperate with us?"
"They might, but we have a high price, and they may not be able to afford it," she said.
