Chapter 191: Chapter 114 Death Knight: Scared Me to Death_2

"Sigma, do not be misled by erroneous history; Saint Dominic was not pure."

The Thousand-Eyed Demon said to his servant, "He is the offspring of the Devil on earth. His steadfast faith cannot change the blood that flows in his veins. He thought that by shedding his blood, he could sever his sins, but some of it still clung to the shroud."

A saint whose devout faith could not excuse the unforgivable sin of the Hell Blood in his veins, where the sacred mingled with the sinful—just the thought of it made the Thousand-Eyed Demon burst into loud laughter.

Although the Devil had failed to seduce the saint into damnation and was ultimately driven back to Hell by Dominic, the Devil had not failed completely. The sinister blood continued to exist among the mortals, providing the Devil with another opportunity for a comeback.

Sigma listened but half understood, then turned to say, "My master, you have now descended upon the mortal world. What shall we do next? I await your command."

"You stay in Jianhe County, use this church as your base to cultivate your followers, and let no one know I have arrived."

The Thousand-Eyed Demon’s gaze turned distant, "As for me, I will reach Lundan, where the dense fog can open the Hell Gate. I have a few friends... who all want to take a vacation in the mortal world."

At this, the Thousand-Eyed Demon gave a cold laugh.

Not long ago, one of his allies had managed to descend upon the earth, but due to lackluster preparation, was sent back to Hell by a Mage shortly after arriving.

The victory that had seemed within grasp was lost, and the pitiful sight made the creature the butt of the latest jokes in Hell.

Thinking this, the Thousand-Eyed Demon grew even more appreciative of Sigma; if it weren’t for the excellence of his servant, his own descent would not have been so smooth.

"My master, I wish to accompany you to Lundan."

"No, you must stay here."

The Thousand-Eyed Demon sternly said, "Remember, do not let anyone know I have come."

"I will obey your command."

September 8th.

Wayne arrived at the cathedral with his briefcase.

Out of respect for history, and for certain reasons inconvenient to discuss, he had his office junior copy five books. The manuscripts would be taken back to Lundan to be put in his bedroom.

Wayne visited the cathedral today not only to return and borrow books but for another reason.

To inquire about the progress of the investigation.

Three days. Do you know how he had spent these three days? Every day, he would be in the office with Odile, reading books, and the juniors looked at them with strange eyes.

It’s outrageous!

What use is just looking? Why don’t the rumors about their office romance start buzzing?

Wayne knew that the Devil’s followers were good at hiding, and to avoid startling the snake, all investigations had to be carried out in secret—not as easy as one might imagine. But three days were too long; if there were no news soon, he would have to return to Lundan.

"Oh, Dean Julian, what are you doing here?"

Just as Wayne walked into the cathedral, he ran into the procession from the Theological Seminary and joked, "This is just too brazen, stuffing people into the church like that. If word of this gets around, Bishop Keith will have a headache."

Julian gave a sheepish smile, learning that Wayne was looking for Keith, pointed him in a direction, and then hurried off with the scholars.

Dean Julian looked awkward, somewhat guilty, but Wayne didn’t take it to heart. After all, the other’s actions were indeed irregular. He asked the church staff and found Bishop Keith confessing in front of the crucifix.

"Your Grace, I’ve come to return the books."

Wayne frowned, "What’s going on, the investigation into the Devil’s minions that you promised—why are you acting as if nothing happened?"

Keith was taken aback, then shook his head, "It can’t be helped, the other party is too well hidden, all leads have been cut off, and I can only wait for them to slip up."

"That’s too passive. I can’t stay in Jianhe County forever; I’ll be returning to Lundan today. If you discover anything, inform Darcy and he will call to inform me."

Wayne sneered with disappointment at the inefficiency. How did the Holy See come to this!

This is how big organizations operate, dragging their feet with all their energy focused on making money. As a hired outsider, Wayne was just there to do the job. Not inclined to interfere too much, he prompted them a couple of times before clarifying his purpose.

"To return the books..."

Keith frowned; there was indeed such a matter. He shook his head apologetically, indicating that he had been so busy that he hadn’t rested, day or night, and his memory was slipping.

"As long as no little boy is hurt, that’s fine."

Wayne muttered under his breath and followed Bishop Keith to the garden warehouse. The latter was somewhat out of it that day, probably due to several nights without sleep, and was in terrible shape. He didn’t even sign the register upon entering.

Wayne reminded him, and Keith finally came to his senses.

In the third area of the warehouse, Wayne selected the ancient books according to Odile’s request, disinterested in staying in Jianhe County as the investigation remained stagnant. This time, he planned to borrow more books.

Not too many; just over twenty, enough to satiate a literary girl.

A moment later, he furrowed his brows and pointed at the bookshelf, "Bishop Keith, has anyone been to the warehouse in these past few days? I remember there were a few very interesting biographies here three days ago, and now they’re all gone."

Bishop Keith appeared thoughtful, and after a moment, he shook his head, "It could have been other clergy. I’ve been investigating recently and haven’t paid attention to the warehouse."

But there’s no signature on the entry log, is there?

Moreover, entering and leaving the warehouse requires your personal signature.

Wayne sized up Keith and finally said, "Get some rest; you’re in very bad shape. In this state, forget about investigating; you couldn’t even stop a heretic if they came knocking."

Keith accepted with a bitter smile, helping Wayne pack the ancient books, and didn’t complain when he took away thirty precious volumes in one go.

"This guy is a bit strange, unsteady on his feet, spiritless, the typical signs of overexertion. He wouldn’t actually be harming little boys, would he?" Muttering to himself, Wayne left the cathedral with the large suitcase.

After Wayne had left, Bishop Keith found Sigma, who was poring over some ancient books, and upon hearing the news, Sigma’s brows knitted tightly together.

The power granted to him by the Thousand-Eyed Demon was formidable, allowing him to manipulate others’ thoughts and wills without leaving a trace, but this ability also had its flaws. If he didn’t actively control it, Keith would only act on the most basic commands.

Sigma had reason to suspect that Wayne had caught on.

"How powerful is this pastor?"

"Extremely powerful, he’s a Silver Mage. He was the one who disrupted our plans last time." Keith answered with a bow, as humbly as a servant.

"Has he returned to Lundan?"

"Yes."

"..."

Sigma fell into a silent contemplation. He had already taken control of the cathedral and the theological seminary, but he had always refrained from targeting the Naturalism Church stronghold. Now it seemed that, despite his deliberate avoidance, attention was inevitably coming their way.

No choice now but to make a move.

"Silver Mage..."

Sigma picked up the phone beside him and dialed a number.

He couldn’t stray too far from his control targets, at least not from the university town. With him out of action, his subordinates were useless, no match for a Silver Mage.

Even if they could defeat and kill the Silver Mage, the traces of magic would make the already complex situation spiral out of control. Fortunately, there are ways other than magic to take a life.

A car accident, a shooting, that would suffice.

————

Highway 114.

With no progress in his investigation, Wayne decided not to stay. He handed the suitcase over to Ottilia and drove back to Lundan alone.

To familiarise himself with the route, he drove slowly, even more so upon entering Highway 114.

The fog he encountered on the way left a vivid impression, and he speculated that it was a high-level copy, a projection of some world, bearing an uncanny resemblance to some urban legends in Lundan.

Wayne did not wish to wander into a high-level copy again, so he slowed down the car further and released a white dove from the window for navigation.

If there was a heavy fog, he’d turn around immediately.

No fog appeared, but ahead, there were two cars that had rear-ended each other, with both drivers standing on the road, blaming each other.

Very dangerous!

Wayne honked his horn to warn them. He wasn’t driving fast, but that didn’t mean other drivers would be slow. If they wanted to argue, they should move to the side of the road and not risk their lives and inconvenience others.

The two drivers, startled by the blaring horn, simultaneously gave the approaching black car the finger.

Wayne didn’t indulge them, rolling down the window to return the gesture.

Small-minded, and a return gesture was not enough; he also had the dove drop a bomb from the air, smearing a bit of the correction fluid on each person.

The black car hadn’t gone five hundred meters when seven or eight men dressed in black suddenly emerged from the woods on both sides, firing their guns and riddling the car with bullets.

With a loud bang, an orange fireball rolled, thick black smoke billowed, and the fierce flames enveloped the entire car.

The assassins didn’t leave immediately; they needed to see the body alive or dead. Their opponent was a Mage, and an explosion didn’t necessarily mean death; they had to see the corpse with their own eyes.

Boom!

The twisted car door violently flew out.

Under the startled gaze of the assassins, a Skeleton clad in black armor strode out of the flames. Touching his smoky head, the upper and lower jaws clacked, "That scared me to death, I almost thought I was going to die."
