Chapter 180: Chapter 109: Fog, Black Mountain Range; Pestilence, Black Sorcerer_4

The two exchanged a glance, leading their subordinates away from the pasture, quickening their pace as they walked.

"The first fog changed these insects, they have become a part of the mist, including their offspring. The municipal pest control can’t deal with these insects, I have to report to Lundan Headquarters and have them send someone over to completely eradicate this batch," Darcy said, filled with anxiety. The mist was dangerous, and there was no guarantee the insects wouldn’t continue to mutate.

Today they dare to eat corpses, tomorrow they might dare to eat the living!

"I still think it’s related to the Black Sorcerer. Otherwise, it’s hard to explain why the fog only mutated the insects and didn’t change other creatures," Keith had a different opinion.

Both had their speculations, but both planned to report to their superiors. There were too many insects and not enough hands to clear them.

...

As twilight fell and the last streak of sunshine faded, the quiet rustling of creeping insects grew louder on the country roads engulfed by the increasingly thick fog.

The group boarded the bus, returning to Jianhe City along the highway, the tires crunching over the insects with such intensity that it made everyone’s stomachs churn.

Just then, the bus came to a sudden stop.

The driver stared ahead in shock as the headlights illuminated the road swarming with countess insects, spreading and crawling to form thick lines, covering the entire highway like a net.

A chill ran down Darcy’s spine, his scalp tingling from the sight, while Keith closed his eyes to sense the surroundings, "There’s no fluctuation of magic power; it doesn’t seem to be the work of a Black Sorcerer. Just drive through; it’s only an excess of insects."

The driver nodded, crossed himself, and started accelerating the bus.

The constant crackling sounds never ceased; the number of insects was so great that those on the bus could distinctly feel the bumpiness as the tires crushed them, forcing the driver to slow down due to the slipping wheels.

The millipedes seemed endless, pouring out from the farmlands and woods on both sides of the road, forming a dark mass that filled the highway.

Keith’s expression grew even darker: "Something’s not right. Everyone, prepare for battle; these insects are coming for us."

No sooner had he spoken than the countless millipedes formed a high wall that blocked the bus’s path.

"Don’t stop, keep speeding forward."

Keith climbed through a window onto the roof of the bus, clutching a holy book and mumbling psalms.

A white light illuminated the night sky, the warm divine will dispersed filth and evil spirits, and its vast momentum stretched for miles. Wherever it passed, the millipedes dissolved and fled swiftly towards the dark corners.

The wall of insects disintegrated on its own, and Keith, holding the holy book aloft, illuminated the path ahead.

Behind the bus, the unyielding horde of insects rolled forward, quickly forming an irregular, rolling mass. The incessant rustling sounds coalesced into a wave, eroding Bishop Keith’s thoughts and causing him a faint dizziness.

Darcy climbed onto the roof and slapped Keith across the face.

Keith was hit with an unknown magical material, the pungent smell woke him up and even had the effect of searing his nerves—suddenly, he wasn’t sleepy anymore.

"What is this stuff? My airways are burning," Keith cried as tears streamed down his face.

"It’s Hell Pepper I’ve been cultivating. How does it feel, much more awake now, aren’t you?"

"Damn it, I’m clergy, how could you give me peppers from Hell!" Keith was even more infuriated.

It’s not literally Hell Pepper, it’s just a metaphor.

Darcy didn’t waste words and directly spoke up: "You keep an eye on the front, I’ll handle the insects behind us."

As a Naturalism Disciple, Darcy had mastered quite a few Faith Magic spells, but with mediocre talent, he had trouble dealing with the large-scale situation before him. Adhering to the principle of conserving magic power when possible, he opted for Elemental Magic, a basic Mage skill.

A fire wall rose from the ground, five meters wide and ten meters high, blocking the insects’ path of movement.

As the swarm dispersed, preparing to move to the sides, a Tempest descended. The fire took advantage of the wind, and the fire wall turned into a fierce, rolling heatwave, sizzling and sending up clouds of black smoke.

Facing the scorching heatwave, the insect horde’s charge came to an abrupt halt.

Darcy breathed a sigh of relief. The situation was still under control. If nothing unexpected happened after this effective deterrence, the swarm wouldn’t be able to catch up.

Rustle, rustle, rustle!!!

Everywhere, the dense sound of crawling erupted, and Darcy’s face turned pale as countless millipedes burrowed out from underground detected by spores he had dispersed.

There were so many of them they were beyond count, as if all the millipedes of the world had gathered in this place.

Darcy couldn’t stand such a crowded scene and erected walls of fire on three sides to block the left, right, and rear, shouting loudly for the driver to slam on the accelerator.

Good news: There was a development in the report, a Black Sorcerer was nearby.

Bad news: The Black Sorcerer had no intention of letting them go.

Millipedes attacked from all directions, no longer fearing the light and flames, and they struck the speeding bus. Seeing this, the mages inside used their spells, either walls of fire or tempests, or banishing evil with Holy Light, to assist their leading brother.

In the distance, the bus traveled rapidly along the night road, trailed by a blaze of fire.

If it were only a few bugs, facing such a force would undoubtedly be an act of futility, but the sea of insects seemed endless, and their numbers were simply too great.

Rain of insects began to fall sparsely from the sky; the swarms on the left and right and behind broke through the fire walls time and again, fiercely striking the windows and smearing a thick, stinky liquid on the glass.

The foul stench diffused; the mages inside the bus swayed as if they were about to fall, while the driver, muster up his spirits, pulled out a custom-made Hell Pepper to stay alert.

On the roof of the bus, Darcy and Keith were barely holding on, especially the former, whose magic power had been severely depleted, making it difficult to continue controlling the fire wall to block the swarm’s assault.

The defensive flame was overwhelmed by the swarm, its coverage steadily shrank, and countless bugs plummeted from the sky.

Just in the nick of time, Bishop Keith unleashed his magic power, transforming Holy Light into a heavy hand that swept aside his sleeve and saved them from this peril.

Darcy was at the end of his rope, and Keith’s remaining magic power was in jeopardy. The two of them stood on the roof, looking back at the roaring sea of insects, both wearing bitter smiles of speechlessness.

The sea of insects surged forward, climbing swiftly into a massive wall that shrouded the night sky, blocked the pale moon, and bore down hard on the slowing bus.

Darcy and Keith closed their eyes tightly, both filled with regrets, thinking being devoured by insects was a rotten way to die.

Boom!!

A wild tempest crushed through, shattering the bus windows, and swept away the pungent odor.

The wind was so strong it caused the bus to slide backwards on the spot, its tires skidding on the road, and the millipede ’hand’ that loomed over them instantly disintegrated, falling to the ground like raindrops.

Darcy and Keith barely steadied themselves and opened their eyes in surprise.

Is it you?x2

How is that possible.x2

There’s another master!x2

In the dark, a figure charged at high speed, reaching the front of the bus in a blink, leaping over the heads of the two men on the roof, and landing directly behind the bus.

Thud, thud, thud!!

The ground shook nonstop, earth walls rose from the ground on all sides, holding back the swarming insect ’ocean’ approaching from all directions.

Wayne stood atop an earth wall, looking at the rolling insect swarm, took a deep breath with eyes closed.

The restless Fire Element gathered from all around, easily tearing through the mist and burrowing beneath the soil.

After a brief silence, columns of fire surged from the ground.

A whirlwind of fire churned, booming with intense red glares, spreading slowly across the sky...

The fire, igniting the night sky.
